I know exactly what you are talking about. I had Crack the Skye last year twice and absolutely loved it both times.

This year, when I saw it was at the kiosk, I drove there and bought 4. I opened one that night and was extremely disappointed. I actually thought "Is this Blot out the Sun?" like someone joked above. There was a little coffee present, but the hops up front ruined it for me.

Thanks for the comments. It's funny, because I actually don't post reviews on BA because I think my palette is so far outside the norm, that doing so would be "irresponsible," and it's difficult (for me) to try to accurately rate by style when I don't taste what "I should" taste. As an example, when I visited Wicked Weed I tried Milk and Cookies on tap (first thing I tried - approx. 1 hour after hamburger/fries dinner with a wheat beer). It tasted (a) nothing like milk and cookies, and (b) every bit of what I think a sour-stout would taste like, even though I have never had one. In checking reviews ex post I saw no mention of (b). Prior to trying it, all I read was "This thing is amazing. Tastes like liquid milk and cookies", and yet I got none of that.

Hopefully I have the opportunity to try it again.

I've had similar experiences - my palate is also pretty sensitive. I did a tasting with a brewer and friend the other day, and said "I get a strong and clear mint taste in this" and everyone else looked at me like I was completely crazy. But that's part of the fun! Developing your palate, talking about it, sticking to your guns, and recognizing the variety of human experience.

A lot of people say things taste like what they were told to expect it would taste like, rather than think about how they personally percieve it.

Looks like they came out with a NEIPA today. Need to get over there to try it out.

If only they worked with Forbidden Root to brew Stay Lit again....

It will be interesting to see when they bottle a NE IPA. They are getting into the game a little late on this trend, but not too late to make an impact. I would love to see them bottle a NE IPA that gains the cult status ZD had 5 years ago.

Crack The Skye was a pretty big letdown this year. It blew me away each time I had it last year

    Caveat: I haven’t had today’s new release

I think 3 Floyd’s has to prove they can make an above average one before excitement is warranted, IMO. Stay Lit was really good but was a collab. They made VCR Gun and it didn’t really fit the expectations of the style and was pretty mediocre.

I think they are starting to enter into the above average category, in terms of NE IPA's, with the recent batch of 25 Million Dollar Man. Plus, the fact that they currently have 2 NE IPA's on draft at the brew pub would seem to indicate that they are starting to get the bit between their teeth. We shall see...

    So..

Every weekend they are doing a different bbq special on the food menu. Had the smoked spare ribs with pickles and mustard last week and oooweee

I think this week was some kind of bird. Maybe smoked pterodactyl

Their new NE IPA is great (Vielen Dank); at this point, not sure what else to expect from FFF as they are never a letdown for me. They basically have every style of beer covered...

    Anyone try the Dunkelweiss?

Well, I think you made one point very astutely :sunglasses:. As to what you should expect? I'd imagine more hops .

So having Crack the Skye on draft at the pub now. Can't vouch for bottles, but I'm getting none of the hoppiness others mentioned. Its definitely way too hot for my liking though. Last batch I remember being much smoother.

Vielen Dank is enjoyable, but its more like FFFs fuck you to a NEIPA. A lot of hop bitterness, but that's what I enjoy about it.

Someone posted on Untappd that they returned 6 bottles of Rue today. Did FFF announce refunds? I opened one today for science. It's definitely heavy cherry forward now.

I've heard so many mixed things about Three Floyds taking bottles back. I've heard they aren't doing refunds and I've heard that they're giving $25 per bottle. Empty or full. I have no idea what to believe

On a side note - I drank a bottle of chevalier to myself the other night and I swear it fucked up my stomach lol.

That's a REALLY tart and acidic sour. I can definitely understand how it would mess with your stomach if you took down the whole 750ml yourself.

Skull Ole was the worst of those FFF acidic beers. It reminds me of when I did a Bell's tour and we walked by a barrel of Wild One. Someone asked to sample it and the Bell's tour guide said it was way too acidic as is to consume and they had to cut if before bottling.... I feel like FFF forgot to dilute Skull Ole before bottling it...
