I loved it when TG began contract brewing PS in Lakeland, FL. I love this beer and it meant wider distribution. I can now get it at my local Binny’s and no longer have to make the drive to Wisconsin to get it.

All was well when it first hit the Chicago market, it was in somewhat limited quantities, fresh, and tasted great. However, I had my first bad experience today. I bought a 4 pack, eagerly brought it home, poured the beer and was.....disappointed. I thought to myself that is not PS, then I begrudgingly turned the can over and discovered the problem...07/14/17 16:29 CHEERS. I’m not a crazy freshness snob and am usually OK with hoppy beers less than 90 days old, but this one didn’t cut it.

Unfortunately, this is the latest of beers that were once hard to get, that when they become widely available tended to fade. Union Jack, Stone IPA, 60 Minute, Sculpin, etc. we’re all former favorites that were once must haves that I now pass on unless on tap. I won’t give up on Sue, will just be more aware of freshness. Anybody else experience the Sue can freshness issue or have one time favorites that you no longer buy due to freshness or perceived quality drop off?

I just keep making my drives to Wisconsin and getting the REAL Psuedo Sue. I get all of my bombers up there, especially DDH Sue. The stuff they can in Florida is not the same beer at all. Can't wait till they kill King Sue!

OP, always check the date before purchasing! Really the only advice I can offer here, sorry.

The new money "craft" conundrum...when a beer becomes available it becomes less amazing and less desirable. NYFRB was bragged up on this site before going everywhere. It's sad really.

Sometimes. But in this case it was less amazing because it was 5 months old. Here, Alpine suffers the same fate, it's not the Alpine from SD, but then again you really have to check dates. If it's fresh it's still worth buying.

You can bake chocolate chip cookies anywhere, but Mom only has one kitchen. The canned Sue has offered TG a chance to grow, but it lacks the magic. I'm fortunate to see distro from Decorah and fresh bombers. Looking forward to the new brewery opening and hopefully seeing the contract brewing end.

Just stick with Ninjs vs unicorn, always see that stuff within a week of packaging when I'm in the area.

Canned Sue can be great but I would agree it's not the same beer when it's 3 months old. With so many beers in the market right now I check dates on pretty much everything before I buy it. Years ago my rule on hops became about a month or less, depending. I'd honestly rather have less options but fresher dates but I don't see that happening any time soon.

If I want hops I go straight to the brewery or look for something that was just released. I don't bother looking at dates on year-round IPA's, because I know they will be at least 3 months old. It sucks, but that's the way it is anymore. I would much rather wait for fresh TG bombers, or go to Disgruntled & Junkyard to pick up fresh crowlers/growler fills than waste my money on stale beer.

    Cheers!

I saw Clark getting into it with a customer on twitter who was disappointed about buying July cans from the brewery (where checking dates is more difficult/awkward). The customer was respectful too I thought...

The "problem" with Pseudosue is that it always used to be kind of under the radar, only available in small quantities and always fresh, quickly purchased by a relatively small number of people in-the-know. Now it's being made in quantities large enough for everyone to get some, but it's still relatively little-known so shipments stay on the shelf for too long and prevent stores from ordering new ones, while beer nerds refuse to buy it due to being old, and the cycle continues. Even with the crazy hype around KBBS and whatnot their hoppy beers are still relatively under appreciated.

In Chicagoland, we’ve had Pseudo delivered to us 5 weeks old or older since the beginning. Our market is too competitive for that combined with Florida making a lesser product. So I disagree that it’s hype or beer nerd related

Well, so much for my theory then. I guess they just need to get with the program!

To your point though. It does get a lot of grocery store distro and there could be a combo of beer nerds passing on it due to freshness along with new drinkers being disappointed in the taste since it’s not optimal

I feel like this issue also revolves around them getting rid of old stock / not making new stock of canned sue from FL, to make way for the launch of the cans from IA. Also distribution chains have all but killed any chance of FL TG can freshness anywhere in my opinion.

When the four pack bottles first launched, I was getting 1 week old beer from FL at Woody's in LAX. On my last visit they had they same 7/14/17 crap, and that was about 10 days ago.

Clark has never been one, at least in my opinion, to take any criticism positively and act to fix the problem. He seems to always take things so personally and normally only makes the situation worse....

Yeah, far "worse" is that he doesn't seem to buy into freshness being particularly important when it comes to hoppy beers. Leaving my personal disagreement on the issue aside, it's mostly irrelevant. People all over the country are saying: freshness matters. Beers languishing on shelves because they're no longer fresh because, amongst other reasons, there are lots of other fresh options available is saying: freshness matters.

Thanks for all of your responses, it seems I’m not alone. Contract brewing and long cycle distribution usually results in lesser quality beer. Hoppy craft beer is moving hyper local for me. I’m just gonna drink Pipeworks, 3F, Half Acre, and Revolution.

I didn’t realize how fortunate I am until I typed those brewery names. I’m sure many of you have the same. I’m going local and no longer care about the beers outside my region.

I dream of going into my local liquor store, filling a cart or two of outdated product, pushing it to the register, telling the cashier "here, these are all expired", and walking out. I would do it if I didn't think it would affect my chances of getting the good stuff when it comes in...
