Weistephaner Origional, and Hefe. Can't do either style better IMO.

I tried one in germany 2 weeks ago, black forest ale. It was a nice session ipa made by schlosskeller in pforzheim. Of what I could find here In michigan I only see erdinger hefeweisen that would tickle my fancy (preferably dunkel). a good hefeweisen on tap out of a tall glass sounds good right now...

Jever of course. One of the few benefits to the beer "system" in Ontario is the buying power of the Liquor Control Board. We get fresh Jever regularly (2-3 weeks old) for C$2.15 a can.

Weihenstephaner Original and Korbinian (and Festbier, seasonally)
    Rothaus Pils Tannenzäpfle
    Schlenkerla Helles
    Ayinger Celebrator
Jever Pilsener (used to be a utility beer for me)

But since I'm all Americano in New England I must say that if a bomber of Pretty Things Bocky Bier came my way I'd probably plotz, and only partly because it was a one-off dunkler bock from a now-dead brewery. So good.

I think I'd say Andechs Helles and Rothaus Pils are my favorite German imports. The Andechs is a good deal but the Rothaus is unfortunately kind of pricey around here.

As for local American versions I'd probably say Idle Hand's Klara (a Dortmunder) and Exhibit A's Goody Two Shoes (a Kolsch). Jack's Abby and Von Trapp get honorable mentions for doing lots of stuff well, even if they don't have my specific favorites per style. For more widely available stuff I'd have to say anything Sierra Nevada - I love their German pils, their Kolsch, and their Vienna Lager.

ETA: can't believe I forgot Zero Gravity's Green State Lager which might be my favorite American pilsner (German style) right now.

For me, it's a tie between Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier and Erdinger Weissbier Dunkel.

That Fritz Briem 1809 must be the worst example of a Berliner Weisse ever made. Doesn't get a single one of the style's characteristics right.

I’ll let you know next time I go to Germany and the connoisseurs can point me towards something that is local, fresh and delicious.

If you don't mind telling me where that was, so that I may take up permanent residency there, I would greatly appreciate it.

Without the word "style", German beer can only mean beer brewed in Germany.

To the contrary, there are plenty of crappy Pils in the north that have far less character than anything from Paulaner. Prost to your good choice!
