New Wild Ale Sunday (Week 660)
Greetings fellow fans of fermentation's fantastic flavors, appreciators of malt and hops, those who think that yeast is tops, lovers of sour and wild, of aged in a barrel, of bitter, and mild, from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY.

Cop pulls the older couple over. "You were speeding," says the cop.
"I know. Taking the wife to the hospital," says the man who is driving.
"What? I've never been sick a day in my life," says the wife from passenger seat.
The man yells at her. "Will you shut up!"
"I see you aren't wearing your seat belt, either," says the cop.
"Well," says the man, "when I saw you behind me I opened it to get my wallet."
"What? You haven't worn a seat belt in twenty years," says the wife.
The man smacks her. "Will you shut up!!" he screams.
Cop looks at the wife, and asks, "Does he always treat you this badly?"
"No," she replies, "only when he's been drinking."

Looks to be another non-fall-like day here. Not complaining, I will take the warm as long as Mother Nature wants to keep sending it. Don't know about y'all, but I love raspberries in a well made wild ale. Love it so much I am willing to wait in line for it, which is what I did y'day along with a fellow NBSer @MacMalt . A non-fall-like day seems perfect for a raspberry wild ale. So psyched to try it, I am having some with breakfast. There And Back Again with Raspberries, from Equilibrium Brewery.
Pours a moderately cloudy pinkish red with an active pink/white topper that threatens to overrun the glass. Two minutes later it is a lasting skim that gives the beer a wonderful look.

Hard to tell where the tart fresh raspberry aroma ends and the rounded yeast tart begins, but it is full of both, wonderfully so. There is a floral note to the aroma, and nice crisp grainy sweet note that give this a luscious bouquet.

Sharper tart notes accompany all the flavors of the aroma and are joined by some earthy notes that have a pleasing spiciness to them that really takes this to 11. Very full flavored, super delicious sip that ends with the earthy notes perfectly balanced with the fresh fruit and yeasty tart.

Spritzy carb. that is on the border of too much but works perfectly with the flavor profile, very clean and clinging medium/full body, and a clean, killer finsh that also threatens to overload and never does.

Highest recommend, if you see it get it.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Happy New Beer Sunday everyone. Unfortunately I have never been one to tell any jokes so I don't have a joke. Things may not be looking so good lately but at least we can still all come here to try a new beer each Sunday! Today I am drinking a Weizenbock from Göller. Weizenbocks are one of my favorite styles so I am excited to see how this one tastes:

The appearance is a dark orange/light brown color with a small, off-white head. As I was pouring the beer I noticed that there wasn't much carbonation.

The aroma is mainly bananas with bits of clove, creamy yeast and some citrus.

The flavor is dominated by yeasty-creaminess with some citrus and banana. There is also a bit of sourness and spice but everything gets balanced out with the cream.

The mouth feel is quite full.

Overall it is a tasty Weizenbock. It's usually tough for me to find new Weizenbocks, as there seems to not be that many of them, so I was thrilled to try this one. It is extremely drinkable and perfect for this unusually warm October day. Hopefully everyone else is enjoying a new beer today!

Cloudy and in the upper 60's - predicted to warm just a bit more and the blasted sun is supposed to peek out in the afternoon today... I'm partial to the colder temps myself, and love some clouds and rain and snow and wind and...

Hey, how's that for a segue to this?
First beer from Chatham Brewing - and yes, I had to Google "Chatham, NY" to see where it is... Basically what I'd call "upstate," but it really isn't that far "up" - as a Long Islander, if it isn't on the island, and it isn't one of the 5 boroughs, it's "upstate"... lol
    [IMG]
Unfiltered northeast style beer brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops, canned 10/03/17... Medium gold and hazy body under a mousse of thick foam that left gobs of lace clinging to the glass, and persisted right to the finish... Aromas were rustic and earthy, with currents of citrus... On the palate was pleasantly not a fruit-juice bomb, as so many NE-style IPAs can be (not that there's anything wrong with that - I love me some "fruit smoothie" beers) - but this had a hearty, grain-forward (is that even possible in an IPA???) character that tasted great... The bitterness was on-point, with a very subdued fruit sweetness - almost like an afterthought - and it delivered a fluffy, smooth, plush feel... Maybe its just striking my fancy in particular, but this was a beer I'd go back to again and again...

Mostly new beers in the fridge today, so I'll be back, NBS - cheers...

What's the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer nuts are $2.95 and deer nuts are under a buck.

Good morning, all! As some of you may have noted from WBAYDN, we are visiting family in the PNW, specifically in and about the PDX. It has been a fairly relaxing time off, and we’ve gotten to visit Great Notion Brewing (new to us where we got the chance to meet @Lingenbrau and his family), Deschutes (not new to us, but had a very enjoyable dinner with a stop by Powell’s Book Store after), and even the just opening Second Profession (really new place near where we’re staying, pending approval on this site, I guess but cannot find the queue any longer).

Anyhow, a classic one where you can Mad Lib in the key values that apply to your situation:

A guy and a girl meet up one night and enjoy each other’s company. The relationship blossoms, despite the guy having graduated from UVa while the girl got her education in Chapel Hill. The guy’s love was so strong, however, that he decided that he would try to become a Tarheel fan.

The counselor he was seeing about this sent him to a specialist who said, “There’s only one way to do this, we’ll have to remove about a third of your brain.”

This was not enough of a deterrent for the lad, so he agreed to the surgery. Upon waking, he felt a little groggy and out of sorts. The doctor was at his side and gave him the news that there was a mix-up and instead of removing a third of his brain, they had left him with a third of a brain. After a moment of silence, the doctor inquired what the guy was thinking, to which he replied, “Go Hokies!”

I’ll have a beer shortly, but we’re currently about three hours or so behind most of you, go to warm up with some coffee.

Good morning New BSers! No jokes from me @lordofthewiens - I have the happy facility of not remembering jokes. This was very fortunate with my former boss who could tell jokes for hours straight - even though he repeated himself eventually, I didn't recognize the joke until the punch line. So on to today's business.

Received from Dragginballs76 in NBS BIF #6 – Thanks Michael!
Undated (2017 sticker) 375 mL capped bottle stored at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – Begins with candi sugar which quickly fades. Then a figgy aroma, followed by a very weak bourbon. As it warms further, the bourbon becomes more prominent. At the very end (> 60 degrees), some coffee aromas appear.
Head – Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive pour), light tan, initially fizzy but settles into a medium density foam. There is above average retention. It slowly drops to an irregular three to five mm dense ring fed by effervescence and a thin, nearly complete, layer.
    Lacing – None.
Body – Dark brown, opaque, effervescent.
Flavor – Begins moderately sweet with just a touch of bourbon and ends with a trace of coffee. Neither the candi sugar nor the figs from the nose translate to the flavors. A hint of oakiness appears in the aftertaste. No malt, no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.

Impression: Not a bad brew but lacking the fruity yeast characteristics of a dubbel. A better description may be a BBA porter, but the malt flavors don’t really come through either. It’s definitely very drinkable, it’s just the style that eludes me. Since I try to rate to style, this can be a problem. However, since the brewer dubbed this a dubbel:

    Appearance 3.25, Aroma 4, Flavor 3.5, Palate 4, Overall 3.5. Rating 3.66, rDev -8%.

Two bras walk into a bar, Bartender asks, "You want anything to eat?" Bra looks at the other bra and replies, "No thanks, we're stuffed."

So I finally get to drink Dogfish Head Punkin. Kansas is finally getting beers I never thought I'd ever get to try. It's a gloriously beautiful sunny crisp day here, it's 49 degrees as I sip this on my deck wearing sweat pants and a cozy hooded sweatshirt. I love Autumn!

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4

Poured into a Great Divide cervoise glass.

Look: Very clear copper body with a beautiful, silk-like light cream colored head that recedes to an even soapy film. Very pretty random patches of lacing.

Aroma: Toasted cinnamon bread, spicy ground cinnamon, allspice, faint pumpkin meat, alcohol.

Taste: The 7% alcohol seems to really cut through the taste right off the bat. However, sharp cinnamon opens the profile with a more genuine meaty pumpkin flavor in the middle. Hints of brown sugar and pumpkin spices follow. A tangy, hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel: A little dry and boozy.

Overall: The beer is a little too sharp and hot for me, but certainly a nice pumpkin sipper on a chilly Fall day.

You have convinced me to give Chatham another chance. To see how persuasive you are (and to have a laugh) check out my place review for Chatham. I also have had some less than memorable packaged beers from them, including their alleged Oktoberfest. But you got me wanting to try this one.

So it's not just me with the bitterness, then.

Do you think hop variety can make a difference in how the bitterness is perceived? In other words, could 23 IBU of Magnum come across differently than 23 IBU of Tettnang?

On the heels of their Nor' Eastah IPA, this, too features Simcoe, Mosaic, and Citra hops, but as a DIPA, comes in at 8.5% abv, and has a canning date of 9/12/17... Amber-brown and hazy-looking, with a few fingers of fine ivory foam, already trailing some lace arms down the glass... Aromas of dank fruit and spiced grain and herbs are followed by very mildly sweet and moderately bitter muted fruits and gentle grains... Flavors kind of muddle together, but in a pleasing way... Soft and smooth, with a little tingle of carbonation... Not as enamored of it as I was their IPA, and an interesting comparison being as how it features the same hops (not sure about the malts)...

    Cheers...

Michael, there was (is?) a ‘school of thought’ that hops which are high in cohumulone (e.g., Chinook hops) will provide a quality of “harshness” vs. hops which are low in cohumulone. I can report that I have never perceived this in my homebrewing.

You can read an EXBEERIMENT on this topic here:

    http://brulosophy.com/2016/03/07/bittering-hops-high-vs-low-cohumulone-exbeeriment-results/

My guess is that for the case of Sixpoint Köld Schauer this is just a case of this batch of beer having a higher bitterness value than what is listed on the can. I wonder if the Sixpoint folks (@Sixpoint) actually conducted an ASBC Beer-23 assay or just used an estimator (e.g., Tinseth IBU estimator) to come up with the value of 23? FWIW I am not a fan (i.e., I am skeptical) of the various IBU estimators; I do not have confidence they can provide an accurate assessment of specific IBU values.

    Cheers!

A-A very clear golden color with a no head and lacing, but a nice amount of carbonation.
    S-A light lemon grass scent.
T-The taste follows the smell, with lemon grass hints and slight tarty notes.
M-A nice light bodied farmhouse ale.
O-Nice beer, with a slight tart and a nice amount of carbonation.

Thanks. I was wondering because a ways back I had one of my recipes scaled up by a local brewer but the first batch came out too bitter. He did substitute Magnum hops for the bittering charge, so I figured that had something to do with it. But it could just have been that we were using different calculating methods.

Anagram from Omnipollo - a 12% blueberry cheesecake stout. Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet black with almost no head. Smell immediately radiates past the glass. Wow. Nose is blueberry cheesecake all the way. Also getting vanilla, chocolate ice cream. Taste is absolutely incredible. Not as cheesecake forward as the nose - more chocolate, a bit of coffee (including a bit of bitterness), vanilla, oak, cherries, blueberries, a bit of roasted malts, and maybe a bit of licorice. Absolutely incredible blend of flavors, and really smooth. Alcohol heat is absent, despite this coming in at 12%. The mouthfeel is amazing - thick and creamy. This is a really amazing stout, and Omnipollo knocks it out of the park again.

They were 10 barrels. It was for a friend's restaurant, and it took them 2 to 3 months to go through each batch.
