next week. My wife wants to visit 3,416 quilt shops & watch whales have sex while I want to visit some great breweries in and around the city. I know the big boys, Maine & Allagash but not much about the hidden gems. Thanks

If your going to be there Saturday the 21st tributary brewing is releasing mott the lesser. It's further south than Portland. I haven't had if so I can't vouch for it, but I'm driving up for the release.

Well, my trip today consisted of Maine Beer Co. in Freeport, Bissell Bros in Portland, a jaunt through the Industrial Way breweries (Allagash, Austin St., Battery Steele and Foundation), a couple of vinyl shops and Honey Paw for a late lunch. That's a solid trip. Throw in Oxbow and you've got yourself a stew going, baby.

That kind of describes me (body of a whale) making sweet love to a hard to find beer.

Some nice spots that have not been mentioned above are Lone Pine, Mast Landing and Barreled Souls. Lone Pine is right in Portland, other two are short drives out. If you like big barrel aged brews, Barrelled Souls should be on your list.

I always stop at Geary's while at the Industrial Way breweries...its one of the New England originals. Recently being updated.

Liquid Riot is right in the center of Old Port section of town. Decent brews, lively scene, pretty good food. King's Head is a great pub right by there.

The Little Tap House is one of my favorites for food and some good local brews.

Novare Res is the most well known of the craft beer bars in the city. They will have a ton of options from all over the world. Thirsty Pig is basically across the street if you want some good beer and house made sausages.

Bier Cellar is my favorite bottle shop in the city. You can pre-order online and they will have it boxed/bagged up when you get there. They get a wide variety of local/national/world brews.

Rising Tide is pretty close to Oxbow (I always stop at Oxbow). There is also a meadery and distillery right in this area if you or your wife wants some variety.

    Have fun!

Banded Horn is down the street from Barreled Souls, so I'd say if you're visiting 1, you should visit the other. It's not out of the way, but it's not central, so kind of gives that leg of a trip a little more weight.

The reason I asked "what are you into" is because the Portland area has a lot of breweries doing different and similar things.

A must stop for me every time. The pork buns are solid and the brussel sprouts are life changing. The well curated tap list and relaxed vibe top it off.

Isn't that site dead? No breweries listed that opened in the last several years and no events in Maine in October?

Will be in town on Friday making the rounds with the wife and 10mo old. Any recommendations for a good lunch spot to grab a quick beer with a child? Our plan is to stop at Bissell Brothers around noon for cans/pours, grab lunch, then head Industrial Way for a while. Current plan is to eat at Great Lost Bear but open to other lunch suggestions.

Also, any recommendations for lobster rolls near Oxbow? Wife insists that we have one while we are in town. I was hoping to grab one from Bite of Maine at Allagash but it looks like they are done for the season.

Bite into Maine is down at allagash, but they're still at Fort Williams. Also, Highroller lobser is usually posted up in the Old Port. Roughly equal quality, imo. Check their instagram for updates on locations. Great lost bear would fit the bill for quick lunch and is right on the way. Personally, I might go somewhere in the old port, but depends how quick you're trying to be. Hope this helps!

Portland Lobster Company has great lobster rolls and an awesome beer selection as well - they do close for the season on 10/28

I know Dinner just released this past weekend but any chance of finding it on tap anywhere in Maine area?

It's usually on tap at the brewery for a few days. Give them a call. I don't know that they distribute kegs, though...
