A good Double Bock: Ayinger Celebrator, Andechs Dopplebock

    for something Different:
Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Lentbeer or Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Oak smoked doublebock but these are very hard to find in the USA. So Marzen and Urbock will do

Could be. With the multi-tier distribution system there is just no way for end customers to really know (unless we have inside information).

    Cheers!

The question is impossible to give a simple answer to - I adore german beer.

But recently I've been loving the fact that I can get fresh Spezial lager on draft not that far from where I live.

They've had this on draught at my local for the past couple weeks. SUPER happy that newer beer geeks don't like traditional beers.

    In a pinch.

Related question: have any of you normal Schlenkerla customers seen updated labels for any of the rauchbiers? I have noticed that the helles has a slightly new design with a bolder font. Perhaps this will be a way to determine if the stock on the shelf is older as the new designs roll out.

Gotta go with three, but they are all from Weihenstephaner, so it's sorta like one.... Vitus, Hefeweizen and Kristalweissbier.

I've been getting the newer Helles ones since the spring. The others seem to have been available for a year or two.

The Fastenbier is the only one with a vintage year printed on the neck label.

Just curious - which of the smaller altbiers make it to the US with regularity?

I know Uerige does (usually just the sticke and doppelsticke), but how about Schumacher, Schlüssel, or Füchschen? Füchschen was on at the Denver Rhein Haus, but it hasn't been there for the last 2-3 years. Anyone see any of those brands in their area regularly? What about normal Uerige altbier?

I wad in Germany in 2005 and there was this Hefewiezen that I had. That beer was just amazing, I was told that brand does not import, and I do not recall the brand name. Just might have to go back to Germany and go on a beer tour during Otktober fest

Anyone out there remember Hacker Pschorr Alt Munich Dark? While I really like Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel, Alt Munich Dark was my introduction to German dark beer and a personal fave right up there with Celebrator and Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock.

Why does Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse Naturtrub get no love. Bought this as part of a mix-a-sixer at my Hy-Vee grocery store and I was like "Heiliger Strohsack!".

    True German: Franziskaner Hefe Weissbier
German-style: Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager (well, Austrian-style, but that's sort of a Munich-lager and I gotta give my love to Oesterreich )

The beer that made me realize that all beer wasn't crappy Bud was Ayinger Celebrator.

It is still great and I order it anytime I find it on tap somewhere. Someday I'm going to make it to Germany and drink it there.

In the USA, Live Oak makes my favorite German style beers. Pretty much everything they do is great.

I think @JuicesFlowing was trying to compare the relative ubiquity of the two beers in their respective country of origin, not comparing how they taste or their overall quality. But I could be wrong. The wording of his post was kind of vague.
