One of the barrels in Double Barrel Huna is a rum barrel and it was just awesome. Also Pirate Bomb comes to mind as well.

This I could see being good as well but I feel like the chili peppers in some of these barrel aged stouts (Prop 2016, Pirate Bomb, Double Barrel Huna) just go perfectly with the rum barrel.

Hearing of the GI double barrel accentuates the happines of deciding to volunteer for the first time this year....working 9-6 Saturday then attending the 6-10pm session. Long day, no doubt....but at one of the best barrel aged fests of the year, it will be worth it. Definitely will be hydrating throughout the day (with water ha), and I believe lunch is provided, which is good. My hope is to be able to sample a few things throughout the day, and once the 6-10 session hits, will know exactly where to go, etc. Once again, will be a long day...but I have a good friend doing it with me.....good people, great beer will make it worth it. Plus not forking out $90. There is a reason most volunteer shifts are gone and tickets still remain. Cheers everyone. FOBAB is almost here!

Dark Horse does a variant of Plead the 5th called Bourbrum. It's quite good. Usually released at the 4 Elf Christmas party in early December, along with "regular" BA PT5 and some maple beers.

Double Barrel BCBS at 17% abv? That sounds boozy as heck and not in the good way. That's like 3% coming just from spirits. Would be more interesting if they used dry barrels rather than this recent tact of fresh, wet barrels....

My thought exactly...most of the Dogfish Head beers at that a.b.v. are nearly undrinkable to me...

So, I've been waiting for someone to say this for me to ask my question:

Several of the BCBS vintages (including now this new 2017 vintage) are 14% or above. I've gotten the "booziness" from the bourbon flavor (which I personally enjoy), but not from any alcohol burn or anything like that. (-Which I have gotten from DFH.) It's not immediately clear to me why an extra 2-3% (although directly contributed by spirits) would so dramatically change this. Thoughts?

I personally DO find fresh BCS to be "hot"; I typically like these beers much more after a year or so.

So, this new double barrel will likely be more pleasant to you than me...

To be fair, I've never had BCBS younger than...8mo. But at 8mo, I certainly felt it was sublime. So, I fully accept that fresh it could be hotter. I just assumed it couldn't change that much over 8mo, given that many report DFH WWS is "a hot mess" fresh, and I got "minimal alcohol burn" rather than first degree burns.

I don't find fresh BCBS hot. It's a good experiment to try a higher ABV version. Would be nice a nice 5oz pour.

Yeah there's nothing at all hot about BCBS when it's released, it's perfect right from the get go.

We fall into the "more is better" mindset so easily. Most triple IPA's aren't as good as DIPA's in my opinion. I may be proven wrong, but I also think Double Barrel will be interesting but not necessarily an improvement

A 3%, 6%, and 9% beer all taste significantly more alcoholic in the progression. Perfectly reasonable to assume 17% is noticably hotter than 14%, especially if those extra alcohols are directly from whiskey absorbtion...

Those are completely different examples based on origin.

If you have no food, some food makes a huge difference in how hungry you are. Similarly, going from 3-6% is doubling the alcohol. Of course it is noticeable. Going from 14.6-17% is a considerably smaller increase.

It would be equally invalid to argue that going from 40-43% in liquor would be unnoticeable, so 14ish to 17ish is unnoticeable.

At the same time, I have had some pretty massive ba stouts that still ended up great. Not quite 17% buy I'm still excited to give it a shot.

I'm fairly certain that 3% increase is all from the wet whiskey in the barrel. They aren't brewing an extra strength BCBS just for this event. Adding a tiny amount of whiskey, enough to increase abv 3% is going to impart huge whiskey flavor, and not the good kind.... Have you had a 17% stout before? You taste that increased abv immediatly.
