Victory White Monkey, a Tripel aged in White Barrels. This vastly exceded my expectations. 4.31 overall
Pours an effervescent amber with a pinky of eggshell colored head, Aove average head retention & lacing

S: White grapes, alittle oakyness & leafy hops once warm

T: White grapes, pears, oakyness & a touch if vaniila up front, a little kiss of booze as well. Some leafy hops come through as this warms, then white grapes, pears & a touch of oakyness. Finishes oaky with vanilla, pear & white grape

MF: Medium body, subtle carbonation, warming

Complex but pretty drinkable; I would've liked little more hoppyness. Closest thing to wine I've had in a while, as the label says; decadent, Very much reminds me of Chardonay, not my ex-stripper girlfriend, the wine :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't do much reading for fun any more, sadly. I am a Tom Clancy, Harold Coyle guy on fiction with Some Cornelius Ryan & Paul Carrel for non -fiction ; hence this video

It is still October – One mo’ Oktoberfest beer

I didn’t think I would have any more new Oktoberfest beers to drink this season but thanks to a good friend I was generously gifted a crowler of Root Down Phest beer.

Root Down is a new small, local brewery which opened near me this past summer. They are located in Phoenixville, PA and they appear to like to have fun with the Phoenixville aspect in naming their beers. They named this Oktoberfest beer Phest and they also have a Pilsner available at the brewery/brewpub called Phuse.

Below is a short write-up on Phest from the Root Down website:

    Phest – Phoenixville Festbier

    34 IBU

    5.9% ABV

My wife made a Stone Brewing Gargoyle jack o’lantern so as a reward for this effort I shared my Phest with her.

    Served Spiegelau Lager glasses:

    Appearance:

Amber colored with a BIG white head.

    Aroma:

There is a toasted bready aroma/

    Taste:

The flavor very much follows the nose with a toasty bready favor. There is a notable bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a dry-ish finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good! There is a bit more bitterness than I prefer for this style but I really enjoyed drinking it nonetheless.

I have visited Root Down twice so far and every beer has been very good to excellent. I would encourage anybody visiting the area to make it a priority to visit Root Down and enjoy some tasty beers!

    Odell Rupture APA
Poured into a Great Divide cervoise glass.

Look: Opaque dark straw yellow, light cream colored head that leaves a thick collar, nice film, and spotty yet unique lacing.

Aroma: Subtle orange with really fresh dry cedar hop aroma.

Taste: Perfect blend of orange zest and fresh spicy hops, with a bit of a peppery finish.

    Mouthfeel: Medium and dry.

Overall: Odell never do anything bad really, and this is par for the course.

Ugh! I still have one more new beer that I purchased in Colorado in late July — a marshmallow pumpkin porter — I hope I can get to it soon before my palate is wrecked

When the weather turns cold, bring out the Imperial Stouts. The Russian from 2SP was sent to me by @larryi86 if I do recall correctly.

It pours and obsidian color with a foamy 2.5 finger khaki head. Incredible retention and a thick cap that remains until the very end with large blobs of lacing on my glass. Looks like a perfect 5! Aroma of big roasty malts and dark fruit. Bitter chocolate, molasses, toffee provide a nice sweetness. Very nice flavor of bold bitter chocolate, dark fruit, more bitter coffee and some licorice. The finish has a light bitterness. Creamy, rich and smooth with thick body. Carbonation is soft but very nice for this style. Great RIS and it reminds me of Narwhal and Founders RIS.

Brother, I'm so glad you gave it a shot. ( I'd be bummed if for some fluke of a reason it wound up being a crappy show-albeit I find that damn near impossible). And thanks for posting the clip. Now I can see a bit.

    Cheers!

Alright, so I got to carving this pumpkin with my 7 year old and we ran into this weird looking encasement:

Me, I scratched my beard and thought it reminded me of something out of the movie Aliens, I thought something was going to reach out from that encasement and grab us, I stuck my hand in and screamed while my son screamed too, and then I turned to him and smiled and said "gotcha!"

Above is the final product and when I was able to take that direct pic, I thought, yeah, that could be "his Allspark" showing.

    As for my current beer:

The aroma had a wonderful blend of sweet to roasted coffee beans, somewhat espresso-like with a light dark chocolate nib bitterness riding in underneath.
The flavor leaned into the roastiness initially and then developed a keen blend of the roast to the sweetness. Lingering roasty to sweet espresso to dark chocolate aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a nice sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt as projected by the brewer. Finish had a wonderful smooth "cold brew-like" character about it. Actually felt like I was sipping on a "cold brew coffee."
Overall, with a rainy Autumn afternoon, this hit the spot for today as I usually love a good stout this time of the year a lot more than during the Summer.

Happy Sunday NBS players. It's been pretty much raining all day here on the island. Not terribly cold but the rain makes a nice mess for the coming of Halloween. Braved the monsoon to hit the grocery this morning and I've been inside watching football all afternoon. Despite the lose the Jets managed to play much better than I had expected. Either that or Atlanta just isn't the same team this year. Got into it a little heavy last night while out to dinner so I'm not sure how many beers I'll be up for today.

My new beer today is another local from Moustache brewing. It is their annual release of 42, a barleywine. This years variant is aged in woodford double oak bourbon barrels. The brew checks in at 10.6% abv, and has a bottle number of 67/264. It's also one of the first beers I've seen with the independent stamp.

A murky brownish color on the pour with very fast carbonation and a non-existent head. Very brandy/cola looking. The nose is big and floral with the barrel and slight fruit notes. The drinking starts very dry and a rather muted carry over from the nose. A pretty smooth flow that finishes big and boozy as all hell. The barrel notes are really big and strong. I really get the charred oak and sweet mellow bourbon. Additional hints of smoke, vanilla, brown sugar and caramel. The base barley wine comes off a tad weak and seems to be largely drowned out by the barrel. Still get some underline fruit notes of candied sugar plums, raisins, dates, and figs. The mouth feel is full bodied with a slight sticky feel to it.

Overall, good stuff but just not great. Last years variant was aged in brandy barrels and it was really good (I was in the 4.5 range on it). The bourbon barrel just does a little too much here and really takes away from the base. I'm in the 4/4.2 range at best here. I've got one more bottle so I'll see if a few months improves it at all.

I'd hoped to be back a little earlier this afternoon but we're starting to clean out our house in anticipation of selling it next year and my wife had me busy all afternoon sorting and discarding nearly 30 years of assorted files and paperwork. By the end I was indiscriminately tossing everything onto the pile to be shredded.

My second new beer today is the latest variant of Rushing Duck's Divided by Zero IPA (I call these "Duckviants"). It was released on Wednesday. The series is somewhat similar to Carton's "Dubviants" in that there is a base IPA and each variant is hopped differently. This one features Citra, Mosaic, and Enigma. And like the Dubviants, the Duckviants are each unique but uniformly great. Adding to the fun of the name, Rushing Duck describes it as "Imperial-Session, Pale-Black India Pale Ale." Here's my review:

    4.35/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Canned on 10/25/2017 so four days old when reviewed. Poured into Rushing Duck Belgian glass. It pours an opaque golden-honey color with orange hues, and a large, foamy, bright white head and lacing that persisted through the pour. The nose features tangerine, lemon, pine, a whiff of vanilla, and discernible but subtle floral hops. The first taste sensation is sweet citrus and vanilla, that is quickly overwhelmed by bitter, biting Citra and Mosaic hops (as well as Enigma with which I'm much less familiar) and a strong flavor of resinous pine. It's tangy but leaves a decidedly bitter aftertaste. This ale is pleasantly carbonated and the 6.8% ABV provides a kick without being distracting. What I like so much about the Divided by Zero series is that each is distinct but all are consistently very good.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beers today. As always, your reviews are informative and fun!

Good evening NBS! And thanks to @lordofthewiens for the grand opening! Its been about a month or so since I last posted on NBS and I must admit I miss it. The reviews, the stories, the education and the friends.
I recently had a choice to make: stop drinking beers due to a medication Im taking or change meds and cut down significantly. Well Ive chosen the latter.
I went 5 days last week- cleaned out the system a bit. Felt good and decided I want to keep drinking malt beverages. So I will probably keep my days alcohol free Monday - Thursday and then enjoy brews in moderation the rest of the week.
    Todays Brew:
Mason's Hipster Apocalypse brewed with Idaho 7 Hops.
Pours a golden orange hue with a white head that stands for a minute and leaves plenty of "world map" lacing. A 3/8" column of bubbles continues to rise from the center of my Allagash glass.
Aroma is lots lots of sweet tangerine and a touch of floral/grassiness. A delicate aroma it is, but as the beer warms dank tropical notes appear.
Taste is the citrus; grapefruit, orange. There is some tropical notes of passionfruit and papaya. Then those slightly astringent black tea notes show and the finish is a crushed pine needle bitterness. There is a slightly noticeable malt base.
Feel is crisp, light and dry with moderate carbonation and a pleasant bitter finish.
Overall a tasty slightly unusually hopped brew that I enjoyed. Just not sure this hop is one to stand alone. Ive had Idaho 7 with other hops and found it to be a better gig. Still a beer well worth trying and I would buy again.
Anyhow have a nice Sunday PM and as always thanks for taking the time to listen. Peace![IMG]

Had this one earlier today, thankful a buddy brought it back from a recent IA trip and shared.

Poured black, looked thick and oily with no light penetrating. Thin head but a swirl looks oily on the walls.
    Smells, coffee, maple, dark chocolate.
Taste is similiar, the dark roast coffee, maple, dark chocolate. On the sip it is like coffee and maple nut goodies, the finish is more bitter, espresso and dark maple syrup.
Overall I was glad to experience this one, it was quite enjoyable.

16 oz can dated 9.21.17 poured into a pilsener glass

Clear golden yellow , streams of carbonation , one finger off white foam cap , sticky lacings

    Aroma of pine hops

Taste- a marzen is usually malty Sweet yet this is dominated by the pine hop taste

Low sudsing , gentle hop bite , lingers on the tongue

Reminds me more of an ipa than a marzen

    Good beer

I discovered Brakspear when our son rowed in the Henley Royal Regatta in 2014. In Henley-on-Thames, just about all the pubs are owned by Brakspear. Maidenhead's pretty close to Henley. Was it the same there? I thought the idea was weird. It's like having your neighborhood tavern owned by Anheuser-Busch.

Well did some planning ahead this weekend and got most of the remaining yard work done yesterday in advance of today's rainy forecast. The weatherman seems to have gotten it right this time. I took time today to visit Trillium in Canton as the had given notice of a cellar sale today. From what I could see there wasn't a lot offered all I was able to pick-up was a couple of bottles of Red Broken Angel that I missed the release of earlier this year.
Okay I need to get my thoughts back on track as I had to stop and get some prep done for dinner as we're making Chicken Picatta to night.
We've decided to stay at home this Thanksgiving. I think we have traveled for the last 5 years so we decided it time to have it at home. This to me is great as I enjoy the cooking of the meal more perhaps than the meal itself. I have also learned via social media that there is a stout fest at an establishment in York Me. on Black Friday. To me this sounds like the perfect kind of shopping for Black Friday and if a certain one of our hosts was going to be at home that day I'd be glad to tick that handshake and buy him a beer.
So now on to my new beer for this very rainy Sunday here in central NH. And after my trip to Trillium it is none other than Red Broken Angel, American Wild Ale aged on Raspberries and Plums in Oak Foeders.
This beer poured a darker golden orange color into my tulip glass. Perhaps a little less red than I figured for color for a beer with raspberries and plums.
The nose is acidic but not overly so to me with more raspberry than plum coming through.
The taste is to me is tart but not overly with a taste of sweet fruit coming through. To me the raspberry is first with the plum in the back. The sweetness to me comes from the raspberries.
The mouthfeel is crisp with a nice amount of carbonation.
This to me is a well done wild ale with the flavors of the fruit coming through. From the earlier reviews I read from when this beer was released I think some cellar time has allowed this beer to age for the better.
