Poured into a teku glass from a 12 oz can. Very dark with a tan head that leaves nice lacing on the glass. 4.25 Smells like berries and chocolate. 3.75 Taste is similar to the smell, chocolate and some sweet fruit with a little alcohol. Wonder if the fruit is from the strawberry ice cream? 4 Medium carbonation with a creamy mouthfeel. 4 Overall, a nice beer with interesting ingredients. 4 with a BA rating of 3.96/5

Cheers, NBSers! My second new brew for the day is a long time want: Avery Tweak BBA coffee stout.

Wow! From the aroma, right off the bat it's clear you're dealing with a special beer. It reminds me of BCBCS.

On the palate, nothing is ready to change that opinion. This is a world-class beer - one that just happens to clock in at 16% ABV. It's like drinking a chunk of coffee-infused fudge. Tones of chocolate, coffee, and bourbon swirl back and forth, emitting errant notes of vanilla and cream to go with oak, grapes, and roast.

Super smooth. Even at $15 a bottle, I think this is the rare beer worthy of the price (and certainly worthy of sharing).

Trappistes rochefort 10, cloudy muddy brown color. Aroma is malt, yeast, dried fruit, and alcohol. Taste is identical, the high abv comes through but it's still fairly well hidden. It's listed as a quad but it came off like a heavy dark ale. An excellent beer thats heavy and very flavorful so one is all it takes[IMG]

    Moving right along:

This was from @The-Adjunct-Hippie . Really nice doppelbock! Aromas and flavors of big caramel, honey, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, and toasted biscuit malts sweetness; with lighter notes of nuttiness, roast, raisin, plum, and herbal/woody hops. Mild herbal/woody hop bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body. Nice bready/grainy creaminess in the mouthfeel. Slight slickness and hop stickiness. Minimal bitter dryness, no cloying sweetness. Nicely clean lagering, not too fruity/yeasty. Zero warming alcohol, very drinkable. Spot on stuff for the style. Rich and clean Munich/Crystal malt flavors, just enough noble hops to balance the sweetness. Delicious. 3.9

Got this one last week. Haven't had the regular in ages. Comes in cans with dates now though, would be worth a go. This is excellent stuff! Aromas and flavors of big honey, brown sugar, brown bread, biscuit, vanilla, whiskey, and toasted oak; with lighter notes of coconut, caramel, toffee, and herbal/woody/peppery hops. Light herbal/woody bitterness and whiskey/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body. Really nice creamy/silky mouthfeel. Slight hop stickiness and whiskey/oak tannins. Slightly increasing bitter/tannin dryness. No cloying sweetness. Zero fruity/yeasty flavors, perfectly clean. I know pacman yeast isn't a lager, but it makes a damn good Maibock. Clean pale/Munich malt flavors, with really awesome balance of the Dead Guy whiskey barrels. Hops bitterness is reduced from the barrel aging. Zero warming 8.2% or barrel booze. Well worth checking out again! 4

Back at it here ba with what will be my last beer of the night.

I'm a pretty decent reader myself. Have not been as devoted as I use to but I'm still good for 10+ books a year. I'm more particular to history and fictional history but I do dabble in plenty of genres. Some favorites would be richard wright, black boy. Steven Pressfield, Gates of fire. Tolkien, lor. But I've also been a decent follower of stuart woods stone barrington series. Pretty much I read anything that comes my way and seems interesting.

My second new beer today is Coffee Milkshake Stout, from Rochester Mills brewing. A big thanks to @superspak for a killer NBS bif #6 box. This is my final beer from the box and low and behold it uses coffee from the same company that was included as my food item. It might also be my last nbs. I'm not that big of a trader to begin with, and I honestly don't see it really contributing to the NBS thread participation as is it's intention. We'll have to see. The brew checks in at 5% abv and has a best by date of 1/14/18.

A steep black color on the pour with foamy and lingering white head. The nose if full of coffee grinds and really pleasant to sniff. Big time malts upfront on the initial sips. Smooth on the flow with the strength of the coffee hitting on the finish. The coffee is pretty strong yet mellow and sweet. Slight lactose notes but not too strong. The mouthfeel is light but really doesn't ever get to watery.

Overall, nothing crazy but a pretty nice light/ full flavored coffee stout. Would probably drink this on the reg if I had access, especially for my rare morning beers.

Great start @lordofthewiens , and I'm enjoying all of the book talk today. As a coincidence, here's a few that I reclaimed at the end of our garage sale yesterday; These are actually some old faves, and I'm hoping I can coax the kids into giving them a shot, and may even re-read them myself if I could only find the time .
Currently I've been on a musician's biography kick . First there was the Replacement's Trouble Boys, then Bob Mould's autobiography, and now I'm starting Dave Davies' autobiography Kink. It would seem that brother Ray isn't the only one in the family with a gift with words after all...

So here's my new beer for the evening, a Texas brew sent to me by @Premo88 -
    [IMG]
Cycler's Brewing Derailer, something that they're calling a Scotch Porter.

Aroma is mostly malt- sweet medjool dates, caramel, tootsie rolls and lavender. Precious little roast malt shows itself at this stage, maybe a little dusting of cocoa powder. The palate, however is a different story- dark chocolate and blackstrap molasses are the dominant flavors, with the dates and caramel coming on mid palate. It starts out sugary sweet, but a pretty solid snap of bitterness keep that in line. The finish is long and slightly toasty, eventually resolving into bitter dark chocolate.

Overall it's pretty nice, and I'd say that they have met their objective of presenting a hybrid of the two styles- the flavors are all complementary and work off each other well enough, and you do catch glimpses of each style on their own. That sugary sweetness isn't really my thing, though, but thankfully as I get further into the bomber it takes a back seat to the dark chocolate elements. It finishes a pretty nice B+ (3.75), and thanks again Robert for sending such an interesting brew!

ETA: now that it has warmed up significantly, and I'm on the last 5 ounces or so, I'm getting a distinct separate smoky element. It's faint, but there, and really shows itself on a retro-nasal exhale. Huh! Pretty cool...

Glad to see I'm not the only one who dislikes the very popular Equinox hop. I don't know if I can echo your sentiment to have never enjoyed an Equinox-hopped beer, but it is an automatic sad face when I see it on a can or bottle.

16 oz can, dated 8/29/17, poured into a teku

A- A hazy golden orange with a two finger white head

S- Citrus, lychee, some mango, touch of vanilla and lactose, some floral hops with a touch of wet grass.

T- Like the nose the ipa are more noticeable than the “milkshake” flavors. Citrus, some lychee and mango, some tropical fruits, mild malt sweetness, touch of vanilla, floral finish.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A decent try at a Milkshake IPA, but the fruit and vanilla fall short compared to what Tired Hands does. This is more IPA like than a Tired Hands Milkshake which might make this more approachable for more people.

As I’m drinking more of this it is starting to remind me a little of Tired Hands Lemon Meringue Milkshake. This isn’t a bad beer at all, but not something that would be worth the 3-4 hour wait and $24/4-pack Tired Hands charges (which some of their Milkshakes aren’t worth all of that). Assuming that this isn’t at the price level of craziness with its release I would say it is a decent alternative, cheer!

I've been trying out different pale ales lately so I thought I would give Bell's Oatsmobile a try. I've liked just about everything I've ever had from Bell's after all.

Poured into the glass you see here.

    Look: Mostly clear, orange-amber.

Aroma: Not much aroma to discuss, really. (Either that or my olfactory sense is weak.)

Taste: This is a mild beer. Mildly hoppy. Hardly bitter at all. Not much flavor to write about. Dry finish. Not much taste lingers. It's 4.3% alcohol so it certainly isn't boozy tasting. In all, everything seems... abbreviated.

    Mouthfeel: Medium. Unremarkable.

Overall: There is a not a whole lot going on to really brag about, but it's not bad either. It would be a fine beer if you wanted to knock several back over the course of watching a football game and you wanted something with a little more flavor than Bud Light etc. Or it would make a good post-lawn mowing beer on a hot summer day.

Good evening, NBS friends, and thank you to @lordofthewiens for his outstanding first post. All of the ovaltines are voracious readers (when the movers came to pack our stuff for the move from Mankato to McKinney, they freaked out over the quantity of books we have), and Sanford and DeMille are two of my favorites.

I have a couple of beers tonight, first is this nice Belgian White from a brewery that helped launch me on my beer nerd journey.

Hazy straw color on the pour, with a bone-white head. Estery aromas from the Belgian yeast mix well with the strong coriander aromas and the slightest smidge of orange.

The taste allows the bright orange peel flavors to come forward, and they mix well with the coriander. There’s also some lemongrass notes, and a salty component as well. Glad I got to try this.

New Beer Sunday: A Doppelbock Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Evenin’ NBSers with a special alert to Bourbon Barrel Aged beer fans who want their Bourbon up front.

Well, the weather here today was pretty much as forecast with long periods of nothing but rain and more rain followed by still more rain. But that also meant I watched more football than usual. However, following the Eagles win and their now being 7-1 much of the rest of the games were a bit less exciting than the Eagles-49ers game.

This evening’s new beer is the Goose Island Cooper Project No 2: Bourbon Barrel Aged Blonde Doppelbock.

As usual my review of this beer, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1146/291158/?ba=drtth#review

If you like your bourbon this is a beer to try. The aromas and flavors are dominated by the contribution of the barrel with the bourbon, the vanilla and a bit of the oak up front. Even in the fairly long ending it’s mostly all about the Bourbon and the Barrel. The base beer contributes some toasted caramel sweetness from the malt and there's a little bitterness showing. The alcohol only shows up in the warming effect it has. I bought only one of these but out of curiosity but I may pick up another to give it a few more months of bottle age before opening.

Taking a break from the Musicals tonight to listen to the music of Fats Domino who recently passed away. (One of the fringe benefits of having friends who are long-term vinyl collectors is that you can get familiar with, and sometimes borrow, a wide range of music from different eras.) Listening to Fats Domino’s work, I realized again that it could well be that no other single musician may have contributed so much to shaping Rock and Roll as a musical genre.

    Ain’t that a Shame

    Cheers, all!

My son called me whilst I was drinking that the first time. He thought I was drunk (note: I do NOT get drunk).

I was maybe halfway through the bottle.

I could do beer bongs with 120 Minute compared to how I respond to Tweak. It tears me up.

And I love it. In very small doses.

If you haven't noticed, NBS, today has been a true New Beer Sunday for me: Every beer today has been new to me, and sadly, not a single one has really knocked my socks off... Hasn't been one I really disliked, but I'm pretty easy when it comes to beer, so that ain't sayin' much...

Down to my last two, this being the first of those...
Steelers game pending; they're walking into a death trap in Detroit...
Citra and Galaxy hops? Double dry hopped with Citra lupulin powder? Yes, please...
Plenty of citrus on the nose - primarily orange and grapefruit, which is pretty common... Followed up with a body of similar citrusy notes, smooth and soft, medium-weight... Carbonation is ample, bitterness mild, sweetness the same... a nice vehicle for two favorite hops, New England-style... 10/18 canning...

Happy to be at NBS late on a Sunday with a busy and fun few days with family. It was an action-packed weekend with my brother, parents, wife, and son - lots of libations mainly of the homebrew, wine, and Bourbon types. Now that the house has quieted down again, I'm happy to cruise into the evening with a brand new beer from a cool new brewery in Chattanooga which happens to be a few blocks from my son's place. They specialize in Belgians and recently bottled a Saison brewed with hibiscus and rose hips:

Saison D'Histoire, OddStory Brewing Co. Chattanooga, TN
    [IMG]
I loved the look of this beer. Pinkish-orange on the pour, forming a copper-like color in the glass. A frothy white head was produced with a vigorous pour, and it settled quickly into a 1/4" cap that stayed for a while. The nose was floral with hibiscus, roses, and lavender. Also some lemony citrus and slightly funky yeast. The floral notes dominated the taste up front. A mild tartness was present throughout that stayed in the background. Some fruity notes were there - mainly berries and some orange. Finally, a nice gentle funk was present throughout. Medium carbonation and medium-bodied with a slightly sticky and funky feel. An interesting Saison for sure. Looking forward to more of their offerings! Cheers BAs!
