I'm not really surprised by that, I mean look at how many different beers Pyraser is selling, somehow they have to cut corners i guess. I am always kinda indifferent towards their offerings. I kinda lied Hopfenpflücker Pils, but I downright hate the Herzblut series of super-expensive,mediocre "craft"beers..

    My fave Autumn pic.
Though the Greifenklau was actually a bit underwhelming for me.

I really should have used our sugar maple as a backdrop for some pics this year -- it fooled me by blooming its astounding colors late in the season. Yesterday the wind picked up and the majority of the leaves scattered. Ah -- well, always something to look forward to next Herbst.

A new brewery for me - Giesinger from Munich. Picked up from an Edeka on a recent Munich trip.

This is their kellerbier - wow! Thick long lasting creamy head with a nice hazy blonde body. Aroma of slight green apple, a bit of herbal hop, a nice yogurty tang (sauergut?). Fresh pils malt flavour with a touch of caramel in there. Mouthfeel is full but a bit too effervescent for me! Overall a fantastic beer! Im gutted i didn't get to their brewery tap! Definitely next time.

Got their dunkel to try tomorrow.

    Prost!

To me, Greifenklau is far and away the most picturesque brewery in Bamberg but their Lagerbier is nothing special. It's better than 95% of the lagers I encounter over here in the US, but it's in the middle of the pack for Bamberg. Not sure I'd seek bottles out specifically, but it can definitely inspire the "Red Stripe Effect" while you're there.

Giesinger is the shining example of what the German craft movement can be. Great traditional beers (even for Munich) served beside a lemondrop tripel and a wheat stout. The attention to detail and subtle flavors equally present throughout. To me, those guys get it.

    That looks utterly fantastic!!

It appears that next years lads trip is going to be a return to Munich for Oktoberfest that will involve two days at the fest and one exploring the city again and I’d like to try this place along with the new brauhaus on Schillerstrasse I think it is?

Greifenklau has a sentimental spot in my heart, since I once lived across the street and hung out there a lot (and was really treated like family). Their brewery is extra cool, with a Kuehlschiff and great lager kellers. I suspect if they marketed themselves more as a farmhouse operation then people would rave about them more. I simply like them for what they are: a true family operation with a dedicated family of local fans (that they treat really well). A true "local" tavern in all respects.

At least since 2011. Their bottles were in those dusty "Beers of Bamberg" 6-packs for sale in the old town area tourist shops.

Been bottling as long as I can remember (at least 1992). Usually only for sale at the brewery, I guess.

I loved the biergarten at Greifenklau, just beautiful. Then I got to Augustiner in Salzburg, whiich I thought was going to be great, and I was seated looking out over a parking lot :disappointed

Act 2 from Giesinger - Dunkel!

Didn't expect it to be unfiltered - i consider this a nice surprise.. Head is thick and creamy. Aroma of brown bread crusts, a bit of sulphur. The bread notes carry through in the flavour with a touch of caramel, unfortunately the finish is a touch bland and thin. Mouthfeel is also a a touch thin and its definitely overcarbonated. Doesn't sit well in the stomach. Overall a touch disappointed compared to the kellerbier. Toning down the carbonation and filling out the body would make this very enjoyable.

Interesting. I've been to the brewery a few times, but it never crossed my mind to take some beer with me... Always liked the atmosphere, esp. the Biergarten, the beer surely is no world beater, but enjoyable enough for what it is. I used to have a mug of theirs...I really liked the slogan "gepflegt fränkisch".

I've tried on two different trips to get in their Biergarten and it was closed both times. :slight_frown:

I have you beat, been 3 times, always closed. Cool weather, or a drizzle.

The next time I'll have to keep my plans more flexible to be sure I go on a nice day.

Ha, have made that climb to closed doors twice myself. Both were due to some sort of renovations in 2011. No issues on the last two visits, but I was pretty diligent about the days of the week, weather, status of the building, etc.
It's beautiful space. It's not quite Special Keller or Michaelsberg, but in the same ballpark. Food is great, too. It's a top 5 brewery view for me.

At least it's Augustiner. I could be seated in front of a brick wall if it meant I could sip some of their Helles from a wooden barrel.

Even though Augustiner Salzburg is damn good beer (to most of us, anyway), don't confuse it with Augustiner Munich -- different brewery.

Apologies if I missed some affinity of yours to visit Salzburg.

As to the parking lot, I never really paid much attention myself.

Ha, nope, no affinity. I thought it was odd when I read it, I almost first replied with, "Wait, isn't Augustiner just in Munich?"
