So, discounting who it's from and whatnot - I really like that Budweiser 1933 Repeal Lager. A lot, even. I was stuck in an area with limited options (Alabama) this past weekend and grabbed some on a whim. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more of it even if there were quite a few options. It's better than a lot of craft lagers.

I haven't seen it yet, but I also haven't seen the malt bill yet. If it has malted rice in the recipe, I can't drink it. I have some allergy to malted rice (or some byproduct of fermented malted rice) that gives me (what equates to) an instant hangover.

Was there any ingredient list on the bottle?

Not that I'm aware of. There's a ton of standard Budweiser "We know of no better blah blah blah" script so it it could tucked in there. It's a surprising 6.1% ABV, which did jump out at me. 10 years ago they couldn't have even sold it in Alabama.

Apropos ... anyone have any good alternate options to Photobucket?

@Domingo - I am also intrigued by the new Bud prohibition offering, I'll give it a whirl too. Deja vu of Bud American Ale? Needless to say, anything dated 1933 would have trouble selling in Germany though...

I'm not sure I even tried Bud American Ale. I think I might have tried it at a whim at GABF, but no more than that. I do recall people saying it wasn't bad. The old AB Brewmaster's Reserve beer they sold in champagne bottles used to be pretty good. The closest comparison to the 1933 would probably be Amber Bock. It's bolder than Yeungling. Not necessarily better, but it's richer.

I remember the Bud American Ale being decent but more of an English PA than American.

Eesh -- hadn't thought of that. My thoughts of America in '33 lean to King Kong!

    I started using "imgur".

I gave it a whirl. I thought it was ok. Like a slightly amped up Yuengling lager. So, it has flavor, just not what I'd be reaching for if I desired an amber lager.

I want to say it may have been almost bock-like, but I don't recall. I was definitely picking up some type of adjuncts, not sure if they used any, but that's how I came upon matching it up with Yuengling.

Had some of the Bud Prohibition. Oof. That is some rough stuff to my palate. Definitely brought back some memories of the harsher malt and hops flavors of the Budweiser I used to sneak sips of in the 70s.

Can ya discern if they're using rice in it?

Did not pick up on what I typically perceive as a rice character (a sort of slickness and adjunct dullness of flavor) in this one. More about the harsh maltiness and (granted, dialed-in-lower-than-expected) hop flavor.

This Saturday the 16th is another chance to get hyper-local in Columbia, SC. 1230 Main Street for the Bierkeller Biergarten where we finish our Maß.

Looking for the Christmas miracle of a taste of the Kellerweisse....

Been pretty diligent in my "Dry January" efforts this year, but I had to have an arthrogram (look it up, it's not pleasant) and MRI on my shoulder today -- biking accident last June that doesn't want to heal up. So I took today off -- and had a nice new German-style Pilsner from one of my old favorite, Midwest breweries: Lakefront Pils.

Quite a nice American take on the style. I have no info on ingredients (none at the LF website that I can find), but there's a light mint quality to the hops that I'm sure is from one of the new generation German hops (Merkur? Herkules?) -- but it's balanced nicely and not overboard.

The malt breadiness is nothing like Ayinger's new Pilsner, but it's very good -- and as fresh as can be from 30 miles down the interstate.

The 'sell sheet' contains the malt/hops used.

    Malts: Pilsner and Acidulated malt
    Hops: Magnum, Perle and Spalt

I also just found the ABV -- 5.0, and IBU -- 38, on their tap list.

Oh yeah, caught that -- just can't find a direct link to the sell sheet thru the web site.

Ne'ber mind -- used the search option and looked for Pils.

I was in the neighborhood of my closest Trader Joe's this week and stopped in to see if they had any of their Winter Brew Doppelbock left over -- no luck. Not to be deterred, I picked up some of their Bohemian Lager and Heller Bock -- both a long-time favorite.

The Bohemian tastes, to me, like a nice cross between a Bohemian Pilsner and a Munich Helles -- not a bad combo when you're looking for a good Ami take on German/Eastern European style.

The Heller bock is a nice, smooth, malty Germanic brew. Just right for appeasing that bready malt craving I get after laying off beer for a while.

Are either of these beers the best of their styles? Probably not, but they're well worth attention -- especially at the $6.50 six-pack price.
