Good evening, all! My work schedule is putting a crimp in my drinking of late, but I did manage to make it to my first holiday show at HyVee last night. There were several Iowa breweries represented, including a couple of smaller ones (West O and Lake Time) that are producing some high-quality stuff. The show featured a variety of other beers, wines, liqueurs, and some great foods (smoked pork, charcuterie meats, cheeses, sushi, and desserts, to name a few). Speaking of Iowa breweries producing high-quality stuff: Toppling Goliath Galaxy Dry Hopped PseudoSue. This glass is similar in profile to the one depicted on the GF Palate Wrecker label where it says "Enjoy in this glass." If it works for Palate Wrecker, it should work for PseudoSue, don'tcha think?

I asked the Boston Beer Co. rep at last night's show if he had any Utopias to sample. He said he just ran out. :grinning: Then he told me that, due to certain vagaries in Iowa law, Utopias could not be sold here. I'll have to check on this as soon as I care.

#2, the bottle says this was originally marketed in Dublin in the 1800’s as a premium porter. That description is spot on. I’m really enjoying this, part of the 200th Anniversary mix pack.

The glassware is in honor of Archie Miller’s first game as IU’s basketball coach tonight. He’s going to be a rockstar, IMHO.

Castle Island and Rhinegeist got together for this big ol' NE-style IPA clocking in at 8.5% ABV. Rhinegeist I find to be slightly better than middling most of the time, but CI has got to be one of my absolute favs in the Greater Boston area right now. Wonder how their collaboration is...

Nøgne Ø Eternal Rest Stout, 14% ABV, 100 IBU. Pours black with no head, hence no lacing. Nose is bourbon, oak, and leather. Taste is sweet, dark fruit, oak, leather, and amazingly almost no perceived bitterness. Decent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

Good evening BA, hope everyone had a good Friday. Was a nice relaxing and cold day. Time for the usual evening lot of reviews after the Black Tuesday this morning.

Thanks to @The-Adjunct-Hippie for this one. Never had a Nitro pumpkin ale before. This is really solid. Good head retention and lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, gingerbread, light caramel, and herbal spice earthiness. Very mild herbal/spice bitterness on the finish. Light carbonation and light-medium body. Creamy/bready/grainy malt and slight sticky spices in the mouthfeel. Minimal dryness, no cloying sweetness. Very thin/watery feeling finish. For 4% this is solidly flavorful. Not doing much for me, but there is nothing wrong with it(off flavors or otherwise). Nice pumpkin fruit presence, balanced malts/spices. 3.48

Great IPA! Nice head retention and soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon/orange peel, light pepper, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, white bread malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body. Balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Light resins/rinds, increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. From my understanding they whirl-pooled hops for flavor and used hop shots for bittering. I was a big fan. Really great balanced dank/piney and tropical/citrus hop vibrancy. Solid malt backbone. Loads of Simcoe and Mosaic hop character going on here. Will get again. 4

Very nice fruited NEIPA. Aromas and flavors of peach, pear, apricot, grapefruit, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, lemon/orange zest, and light pepper/pine hops/fruit; with moderate toasted bread, light caramel malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Muted aromas. Mild pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness and fruit tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body. Bready/grainy wheat creaminess and light hop stickiness in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Juicy and lightly dank hops with balanced prickly pears and toasty malts. Very easy drinker. Mikkeller has better NEIPAs of course, but I was a fan of this. 3.88

2017 vintage. Fantastic gueuze! Amazing head retention and lasting lacing on the glass for the style. Nice clarity. Aromas and flavors of big lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, melon, pear, green apple, citrus peel, white grape, white wine, hay, straw, peppercorn, oak, leather, and musty funk; with some wheat, white bread malts; herbal, floral, grassy hops and yeast earthiness. Slight touch of white wine vinegar. Light-moderate herbal/grassy bitterness, yeast/oak tannin spiciness, and lactic tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, medium body, and moderately crisp finishing. Balanced grainy malt, lactic acid, tannic oak, and hop stickiness on the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter/spicy/tannic/acidic dryness. No puckering/astringent flavors. Very smooth sipper. Absolutely wonderful musty Brett complexity; with balanced dry hops, pale malt, and oak barrel notes. Absolutely spot on for the style. 4.23
