I agree on coffee. Had it last night at Fobab and all I picked up was green pepper. Not impressed.

Very strange to hear people are getting a green pepper flavor from the coffee variant. I had it during the FOBAB am session and thought it was fantastic. No green pepper at all.

People say this every year about coffee. Must be a taste sensitivity thing or something.

I agree. Could also be with what people had to drink beforehand. I've found that it makes a pretty big influence on the notes you pick up with a beer (or beers) that come after.

The BCBS 17 tasted weird to me at FOBAB. Thin, watered down, with a slight cardboard flavor. I'm not even sure I was handed the correct beer. I held off on giving it a rating until I can try another pour of it. All of the variants tasted great to me.

I tend to find people that don't really like actual coffee, or can't drink their coffee black, are always paranoid a coffee beer will taste like green pepper, and then they usually confirm it does, seemingly out of bias or paranoia.

Not saying anyone's wrong here or that not what they're experiencing, but I think it's definitely it's a personal palate quirk with those unfortunate folks. I have a friend I do bottle shares with all the time, and we call him Sergent Green Pepper because of this. It's to the point we rag on him any time he buys a coffee beer--he recently acquired the old ass Cycle anniversary set that was all coffee variants and we were ribbing him the entire month leading up to the share. There was no green pepper in any of them, but Cycle proved their Drink Fresh warning isn't to be ignored. They did not hold up well, and were very acidic and boozy.

I find green pepper flavors in most hot Intelligentsia coffee directly from their locations. However, when I buy my own intel beans and cold brew them, I never pick up green pepper.

When it comes to beer, I’ve only noticed green pepper a few times. I’m sorry I can’t provide specific examples.

Seems like people mention green peppers every year with BCS Coffee and I've never once had a hint of green pepper. It must be a palate thing since it always seems to be the same people who pick up the flavor.

As a non-coffee drinker and someone who isn't a huge fan of most coffee stouts, I've never had any issues with BCS Coffee. While it's never my favorite, or even 2nd favorite variant of the year, I've always found it tasty, and haven't gotten any peppery flavors. Palates are really an interesting thing.

I wish those people would hold off on buying them and leave more for the rest of us, it’s always been my favorite! My sample at Black Dog yesterday was nothing but chocolate and booze with a slight roast, just how I like it. No green pepper to speak of, but my palate was also pretty clean at that point.

Year in and year out, coffee ends up being my favorite variant (Granted I've never had the vanillas or non pepper props). Even '15 coffee was delicious when I drank within the first couple days of Black Friday that year.

Side note I love black coffee, and black cold brew

Wow - i never realized it until i read your post, but I’ve had the exact same experience with intelligentsia. I always chalked it up to someone burning the coffee or a weird roast (or me being crazy), but that flavor profile is consistent.

I believe it means that the beans were picked too early. Although, like I said, when I cold brew them I don’t pick up that flavor nor do I pick it up in Intel’s cold brew.

Thought I remember some of the BCBS 2017 lineup preview write-ups indicate that coffee actually didn't have a ton of coffee...

Just picked these up at a random liquor store on Mannheim Rd in Bellwood for $9.99. Even if both of my fantasy football teams lost today, I’m still a winner!

Coffee was excellent this year. Best coffee since 2014. I drank several coffee beers at Fobab and the only one that I noticed green pepper was 3 Floyd's Crack the Skye.

Nope, keep it coming. I've checked the weather myself (just a glance), and it's always fun to start an early panic.

So I haven't camped out for a beer release. I'm assuming I need a place to sit for long hours, but at the same point I don't want to give up my spot in line to use the facilities which will be tough given the amount of turkey I plan to eat. Do I just roll with something like this(and hope it clears the line out for me)? https://www.rei.com/product/876179/reliance-luggable-loo-portable-toilet
