I've never done enough cans where it doesn't fit in the USPS medium flat rate but 10 won't fit so what's the best way to send 10 cans?

A bigger box. Most people don't ship USPS.

A large flat rate box. 12 fit fine, so 10 would be great.

But it matters how far you're shipping, may be cheaper to use FedEx or UPS, or if really close to use priority mail in your own box, not the flat rates.

10 cans? That'll fit in a 10x10x10 box, no problem. Either the USPS flat rate large (make sure you add additional carboard in there, pack it tight) or get an appropriately large box and send it FedEx.

With cans, the thin sidewalls are the most vulnerable area. I've had a few cans get punctured.
I also put everything in gallon ziplock bags and sometimes also in a garbage bag.

Hi, Why 2 medium instead of 1 large? Not being a jerk, just making sure I am not missing something.

Assuming these are the typical 16oz cans, no way you can fit 10 of them in a Large FR box, especially if you want to pack them semi-well.

Unless you're sending to HI or AK, 2x Medium FR will cost you close to $30. It may have been cheaper with FedEx.

You kidding? A large FRB fits 12 16 oz and 4 12 oz cans perfectly.

It depends where you are shipping. Cross country I would go Large FRB. Close by I would box it and sent UPS. That would probably be cheaper.

I agree with @SammyJaxxxx , I put 10-12 cans in large flat rate shippers all the time and there is plenty of room for safe padding. Probably sent at least 50 like this with 0 issues.

That being said, if I'm shipping something really hard to replace I use bottle shippers and FedEx, but cans I am usually not worried about being able to replace if there is an issue. Never had an issue yet with USPS. Knock on wood (2 went out today!)

I guess my comfort level of what I consider to be safe padding is different from both of you. The max I've done was 8 cans.

Best to always go with what you are comfortable with. I know a lot of people shy away from USPS in general.

In my experience, speed and price is usually the best w/USPS priority. Even to HI or AK usually 2 days!

@SammyJaxxxx is definitely the king of packing though, I'm pretty sure seeing what he does with a flat rate box convinced me to start using them a few years ago. Nothing but success since.

So, I received a rare delivered via USPS once. To this day I have no idea whether to be proud of the shipment or scared. There were lots of peanuts, but the wooden box was just kind of gently placed on top, and there was a like 6 inch gap between any type of padding and the top of the box.

When I received it, it literally looked like it had just been packed. I feel like a Wizard delivered it. How could the box have not been jumbled around more?

Never can tell how they will be handled. I say yes when they ask if there is liquid in the box. Some put a liquid sticker, some don't.

I have received a few that look perfect and a few that are smashed up pretty good.

I can get 12 well-padded cans (6-12oz, 6-16oz) into a medium Flat Rate Box. Getting 10 16oz in should not be an issue.

I just sent 10 16 oz cans in an Amazon box. Not sure exactly the size but it is oblong and popular. (There was a stack of 12+of this size in the UPS store.) the box was as long as 2 16 0z cans.

Have you (or anyone else that sees this) found a way to calculate USPS shipping for a non-flat rate box? I am trying to send a few bottles, but the medium flat rate box is at most a $1 cheaper than fedex, and I don't need it there in 2 days. I was hoping I could use a similar sized box of my own (or maybe a little larger, but still smaller than 1 cubic foot inside dimensions). I am trying to figure out if I can save any money by going USPS than FedEx. It's both holiday & Stout season (and, apparently, car repair season).

Use this and select the by weight dimension option.

    https://postcalc.usps.com/?country=0&ccode=US&oz=03777&omil=False&dz=06437&dmil=False&mdt=11/20/2017&mdz=15:29&m=6

You will see the price of the non-2 day option, and comparison to other options.

I find that smaller boxes to locations that are not too far are often cheaper than the Flat Rate boxes. But weight and distance changes things.

Just shipped one from NH to SC. It would have been $30 for the USPS ground vs the $18 for the large flat-rate. Same exact size to CT was $12 using the USPS ground. (box was 15lbs, about the size of a Lrg Flat Rate).
