Dad: "Bill, do you happen to have a bottle opener?"

Bill: "Oh boy, do I ever!!"

Dad: "Wow this is a nice bottle opener, looks unused, how much did it cost?"

Bill: "It was a little pricey, $18, and they only let you buy 1 per person so I couldn't stop up"

Dad: "Son, what the hell happened to you"

That calzone is my sights. I haven't been back to Lucali since I went seven years ago given the crazy wait, but having family in town this week seems like the perfect excuse to go. A drink at the taproom and a growler to go will be a perfect way to kill time waiting for a table.

Also off topic, but the fried calzone at Prince St pizza is different but also amazing. It's like a zeppole with ricotta and mozzarella.

OH doesn't need a Black Friday sale to move these...even at $18. I hope I'm wrong.

Has OH or any other NEIPA breweries ever released nutrition facts for their beers? I know they're not required to, just mildly curious what these things would look like on paper...I think.

I can't imagine Lucali being too busy this week, so hopefully it won't be a crazy wait. Their calzone is to die for. I actually did the opposite with some friends in the summer. We went to Lucali, and then Other Half afterwards, but we were so full we could barely drink more than two glasses.

Never had Prince St. Pizza's calzone, but their Spicy Pepperoni Sq is top notch. I'll have to try their calzone next time I go.

Ever since I bought a matching ballcap, sweater, t-shirt, tulip, teku, beach towel, and catheter, I just couldn't look back.

I’m imagining BA forum members having an argument with their friend while on the way to Thanksgiving:

“I ain’t drinking any efffing oat cream IPAs!!!!!!”

[this post is not based on anything remotely factual]

You have to imagine that a 16oz of an oat cream DIPA must run around 400 calories right? Or do you guys think more?

Other Half "old school" Single hop IPAs are like the Michelobe Ultra of Other Half on calorie content! No DDH, no oats, no spelt, no Cinnabon cream added, and not 10% freakin alcohol sugar levels.

I would not be surprised if it approaches that or more... hell 12oz Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is ~175, just bringing that to 16 oz makes it 233 calories before factoring 3% higher ABV + lactose etc....

Looking at homebrew recipes I've made and making some guesses around possible ingredient combinations they might use (I haven't ventured into lactose, and don't really pay attention to OH's ingredients), 375-425 seems right for a 16 oz can of an 8% LacOated NEIPA, easily 450-500 for a 10%er, depending on how high the final gravity is/how much lactose they use. These are theoretical calorie counts, of course, based on nothing OH-specific.

I guess I'm not so concerned about calories (I couldn't gain weight if I tried), but way more concerned about the sugar levels. How many grams of sugar do we think is in your average NEIPA?

Right around that, yep. An 8.5% beer would translate to ~340 calories from alcohol, which is the most significant portion to consider. On top of that, anywhere from 50-100 calories of residual sugar can add to the total, depending on how attenuated the beer is. The presence of lactose doesn't necessarily guarantee it'll be on the higher end of this range, as lactose, when used sparingly, doesn't have to add a ton of sweetness to the beer. In fact, I've actually heard brewers (Tired Hands, for instance) say they use lactose in very small amounts to impact mouthfeel more than add residual sweetness. Most of the cloyingly sweet beers I've had actually haven't had any lactose or adjunct sugar in them but have, rather, just been severely under-attenuated.

Basically, point is that ABV is by far the most important factor to consider when estimating calories, and you can be sure that 2x DIPAs ~= 1x carbohydrate-heavy meal, no matter what.

    Very funny stuff, well done!!

I almost always bring my own stuff when I go to family events. It was a no-brainer when I went to my family, but when I first started meeting my wife's family and extended family, took some time to get my wife used to bringing my own beer, she got used to it, but took some balls to bring my cooler to events where pretty much no one else drank craft beer.

I do this for all family holidays. I sometimes will even ship out to beer to my In-Law's place out in Colorado for Xmas day drinking.

Also, important to note that there are other non-fermentable sugar adjuncts that are added to beer all the time beyond just lactose. Almost all of Trillium's hoppy beers contain dextrose, another simple sugar that is actually a byproduct of our bodies' digestion of lactose. Unfortunately, breweries don't often disclose their full malt bills, so it's really impossible to know what's in most beers. (My hypothesis is that breweries feel compelled to disclose lactose specifically because of the prevalence of intolerance.) I understand why this is needed to protect intellectual property and such, but it's certainly frustrating if you drink a lot of beer and want to be aware of what you're putting in your body!

I'll be in NY area later tomorrow (post 4 PM) and Wednesday all day. I see there is a can release tomorrow starting at 3 PM. Think if I get there a little bit later, I will be good to go? I'm assuming to expect a line.

Thanks! (Obviously, have never been there before)
