Von Trapp Vienna Lager is a great Octoberfest replacement around here that is available all year. However, it is likely not available in your area, but figured I mention fo rother folks that are reading this thread. An absolutely outstanding lager and only 15.99 a 12 pack...

Similar to an Ami Okto, but not usually similar to the Bavarian-brewed beers.

@Lahoi -- what was your favorite Oktoberfest of this past season?

In areas (such as mine) where it doesn't sell "out of season" the distros don't keep it in stock. I know some areas (such as the Twin Cities) sell a lot of German and German-style beers year-round, so you can almost always find Spaten, Paulaner, and Hacker-Pschorr Amber Märzens, but that's more rare than the norm.

Also, since Paulaner HQ has left Colorado -- you may want to check the availability in your area now. Sort of wonder if that will dwindle now.

Just picked up a freshish sixer of marzen this week. I'll have to keep an eye out.

Jim, I wouldn't doubt it. Regardless of the 'source' of not dating bottles the net result is the same: it stinks!!

Non-cheers to breweries who acquiesce to importer demands!

I'd take a pass on the Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen, and buy/drink as much of the Paulaner Oktoberfest Wiesn as I possibly could when it comes back around next year.

@Lahoi Like many other have already said just pick up some Amber and/or Vienna Lagers and go from there. I don't know if UCBC distributes in Kentucky, but I'd try a few of their beers as well if they do.

I like Devils Backbone VL and in fact picked up a sixer today. Don’t stock it all the time but enjoy a well crafted lager from time to time. Warning, dates hard to find sometimes.

The Paulaner amber Märzen is just their Helles Märzen with added Sinamar.

Not only is that tidbit interesting, but the fact that you called their Wiesn a Helles Marzen is interesting too - the name makes perfect sense, but I don’t remember anyone actually using that exact term for it here before.

I am curious if the levels of Sinamar that they use contributes anything noticable to the flavor. I am also curious how widespread its use is in American and German amber Marzens.

Tagging @herrburgess here so he sees your post above.

Yuenling traditional lager. Tastes a lot like less hoppy Octoberfest to me.

You may want to try the new 1933 retro Budweiser. It is a bit too sweet for my taste. Widely available amber lager. Gets good reviews on this site.
