Beer Junction has CBS in bottles ($26.49) and on tap. Just for fun, we (my wife and I) had side by side 4 oz pours of CBS, KBS, and KDS Coffee. In that competition, the most hyped and most expensive CDS ran third. It's just a little too sweet for both of us. Still a fun beer, to be sure, but it's not better than KDS or Fremont's masterpiece.

Geez, typing on the phone has problems. Should have said "the most hyped and most expensive CBS."

Had a 1/2 pour at Tin Bucket in Portland. Very rich and coffee/maple forward. Somebody on the main thread said it was thin and I do not agree with that at all. If you don’t like coffee, don’t buy it. I like it a lot.

Portland folks....it’s everywhere. Johns Market got at least 5-6 cases. Probably won’t drop $25, but it met the hype for me at least. While I’m here, a bunch of other goodies dropped as well.....

BA Ballast point victory at sea ($3 for 12oz bottles. Not a bad deal)

    Vanilla Rhino Suit....yum

Baptists. Triple Barrel, Baptista, and Regular Big Bad

ft George 1000 years Mexican stout.

I guess it’s that time of year

If anyone wants a growler, they're $46 at b² in Salem. Solid cost/oz vs. a bottle, I guess.

Still at Chuck's Greenwood, as of a few minutes ago anyway. They nicely held some cases back for the after-work crowd.

I've been wanting this for a very very very long time.
I never let my expectations get out of control to the point it clouds my judgement.
Again, been dying for this for 8 years.
    Got one today, yay! Meh.
When this came out, yup, I get it. Amazing. Groundbreaking. Like pliney. Now... eh. It's good. It is thin, compared to thick ass stouts. It's good. I was disappointed. I wanted more. I expected a stout from 2015, and was given a stout from 2002.

Everyone needs to remember there is zero way to compare the original to today's, unless you have some sort of brain memory freezing capsule sorta deal that can un-subjectively compare the 2 when fresh. That said, this is a common trend among 'Legacy' brands. Science has actually proven the first time you taste something will always be more memorable. So just drink the beer and enjoy

One last thing on A-1. The second location up on 144th received their allotment later. I wonder if they are transferring bottles back to the 104th street location that had better prices. In regards to getting a nice pour on 104th, this is why I'm a fan of that location when it comes to draft. You can get some nice pours. Especially if you treat the owner and staff well. Yes, the prices have went up. There is a sucky back story to this. I just dont want to put their personal business on the streets, out of respect. Lets just say they had no choice because some people are pieces of crap!

It's so funny hearing/reading the thinness and coffee stories with CBS. I'm not a huge fan of the thick oily type dark beers (aka non-barrel aged Ten Fidy). Maybe this is why some like the thinness of CBS and others don't. I do think CBS is a little pricey. Cans of BA Ten Fiddy have been running as high as $15 per can. Isn't that beer 14-16 oz in taller skinny can? So maybe similar to CBS in price per ounce.

Geeze, has anyone noticed the sheer volume of Fremont BA Dark Star & Abominable around the PNW? Wow, they must have increased production big time. Lots of price fluctuations also.

Yeah... no. This was the first time I had it too...
A recipe is a recipe. It is achievable to make the same beer over and over again. I hate saying it, but bourbon county is really good, repetitively. I understand batch variation, but cbs is a classic case of, as you say, legacy beer. It is. Completely. I'm sure it was mind blowingly great, it's not now. Period.
Pliney, both, were the same. They're not now. But when they first came out were miles above the pack.

There's actually a current CBS thread in the release forum, with a lot of folks bringing up similar observations about the current version (as opposed to previous versions). I haven't tried the current batch, so at this point I still can't comment on it. That being said...

I did have a similar reaction when I tried KBS this year (which I found to still be solid beer, but a disappointment when compared to my reaction to the beer previously). I have no idea if Founders changed up the recipe or what, but at least to my palate, it definitely wasn't as good as I recalled it being when I first tried it some 10 or 11 years ago (and when I first had it on tap some 7 or 8 years ago. I thought it wasn't nearly as rich with a much thinner mouth feel.). That absolutely may simply be a result of changing tastes and/or perception and expectations, as there are just so many outstanding BA stouts on the market now. Frankly, having had the opportunity to enjoy beers like Rusty Nail, KDS and Bbomb on a fairly regular basis, it's hardly any surprise that a lot of old favorites are going to suffer by comparison. I'm still looking forward to trying CBS on tap this weekend, and I hope it's as good as I remember, but I'm already preparing myself for possible disappointment.

Only time I even came close to being able to snag a CBS in a trade I would have had to give up a BW12 for it and passed. I was able to snag a bottle at John's yesterday and am stoked to try it.

I drank a bottle 5-6 years ago when released and enjoyed it. I’ve had it randomly on tap in Grand Rapids since then and really enjoyed it. Had it on draft yesterday and enjoyed it. It’s the same beer, and it’s really good. The bottles are couple bucks overpriced though.

You just described my reaction when I tried it for the first time in 2010.

Some folks like it a lot. Me, I keep wondering what the big deal is, apart from rarity.

The Total Wine in Vancouver had tons of BCBS on the shelves, along with BA Dark Star (regular and coffee). They also had CBS and Bbomb at Customer Service, limit 1 each.

(I picked up 2 sixes of Leota Mae. I hope the 'Couve sells enough of that to keep the supply fresh and steady.)

All due respect, but if you, or anyone else, have been "dying" to try anything for 8 years, that thing has a very tall order ahead of it when it comes to meeting expectations - and no matter how much one might try to keep them in check.

I remember once, back in high school, really wanting to go out with this one girl. It was maybe 8 weeks or 8 months (the precise amount doesn't really matter) where I seemed to do little more than pine for this, but in my adolescent throes it felt like 8 years. When I finally got the chance, it was really nice, but not quite as lovely as I'd always imagined it would be. She was a great girl, but in my head and heart she'd become something even more. (I'm sure, if she'd ever thought of me, I probably disappointed her a little, too:slight_smile:)

All of this is to say, let's be fair to the beer, and mindful of our limitations. We are not the complete rulers of the stuff between our ears.

I've had beers blow me away on first taste only to be disapointing a week later when I try them again; pleasure is a fickle beast. Sometimes we react to things differently at different times, let alone how much our pallete can be affected by what we've recently consumed.
