I've had them before, Sessions Black Lager, Sam Adams, but yesterday I tried a Monchschof and was blown away. Oh so tasty! Anyone else enjoy this style? I don't think I can ever go back to Saranac or Sam Adams again. LOL.

I would say several people, including yours truly, enjoy this style.

See if you can get some Black Bavarian.

Einbecker and Kostritzer are also really good, but Monchshof is #1 in my book for its complexity.

A close #2 is one that I don't believe we get anymore: Herold Black Lager. If you do see it, though, don't hesitate to pick it up. Awesome black velvety stuff, wonderful mouthfeel.

I enjoy Swcwarzbiers but it's hard to find them at all, let alone good examples. Duck rabbit makes a decent one, as does Sam Adams.

Black Bavarian is my favorite. Duck-Rabbit does a nice version of this style as well. This is one of my favorites, that I wish more breweries would venture into creating...

Agree with this 100%. I was lucky enough to have the old Koestrizer before the brewery was bought out. Other favorites are Klosterbrau Schwaerzla from Bamberg, and U Fleku's sole beer at the tavern in Prague. But the best one I ever drank was a fresh Purkmistr in a weird pub right outside the train station in Domazlice, Czech Republic. Deliciously spicy stuff.

Love'm. This is one style I wish more American breweries attempted.

I really like Port's Midnight Expression.

I'll echo the praise for Duck-Rabbit's. I wish Sam Adams' was available in a six-pack.

Also, while it lacks the body and roastiness of some of the Schwarzbiers mentioned herein, Full Sail's Session Black is quite good.

I'll throw in another recommendation for Duck-Rabbit and Sprecher Black Bavarian. It's not a style I've had enough of to really rank them, but I do enjoy them.

I would really like to try the Duck Rabbit but I don't think they distribute to NY.

Is it really? I've only seen it in the samplers here in NC.

Duck Rabbit's is top-notch, though I think they may have tweaked the recipe for the 2012 batch. It tastes a little different (and unfortunately not as good) than it has in the past. If you're ever in the Bay Area, absolutely seek out Moonlight's Death & Taxes. It's not listed as a schwarzbier on the site, but it certainly tastes like one.

I've been pleasantly suprised by Magic Hat Howl. Not world class at all, but solid, above Sam Adams anyway.

I do enjoy a well made Schwarzbier As other have mentioned Monschof Schwarzbier is very tasty; it is the most complex Schwarzbier that I have had the I had the pleasure of drinking.

Sprecher Black Bavarian is very good; it is a tad on the sweet side for my palate but an enjoyable beer nonetheless.

If you can get your hands on it, Shiner Bohemian Black Lager is a very, very pleasant beer to drink. It won the Gold Medal this year for the Schwarzbier style if that means anything to you.

I am fortunate that a few local brewpubs make very good Schwarzbiers: Iron Hill (Phoenixville) and Rock Bottom (King of Prussia).

I do enjoy the Sam Adams Black Lager; that is one of my favorite Sam Adams beer styles.

    Cheers!
