The Half-Acre thread (2018)

Gah - gotta find a way to rally today, think i'm getting a cold, to try both the latest BH and this new IPA. Bummed they didn't have Fluorescent on tap earlier this week.

 

Oh I will be so disappointed in BA Big hugs, grabbed bottles but tried it on tap (says BA Big Hugs on the sign) it was AMAZING and so much Maple.

So BA BH doesn't have any maple?

the Vanilla I tried was such a cinnamon bomb I couldn't even taste vanilla.

 

American Elder is damn tasty

 

Any elaboration?

The beer isn't even on untappd yet, unless I just can't find it... I'm hoping for some reviews before I head up there.

 

Similar base to most HA IPAs. Some fruit notes on the nose, slight hop bit balanced out by some citrus. If you like their IPAs this one is a shining example

Anyone try Double Daisy Farmer? Are bottles making it to Chicago?

 

Oxbrow said it should be hitting this week.

HA said they will only have it on draft. No bottles at the taproom.

 

Just asked at Lincoln. Was not on tap there. Only at balmoral and it’s already kicked. I was dying to try it.

 

American Elder is awesome. Not NE style at all, just mentioning that as a heads up if anyone is expecting that due to the Tired Hands mix in. But the hops are BRIGHT AS HELL and really dank, probably some of the brightest hop tones coming out of a Half Acre IPA as of late, aroma is dialed way up with the beer itself being very smooth, with the Half Acre finish. Really really nice.

 

Second this. Had a small pour before getting cans. Super juicy and hoppy with loads of flavor. Had a fairly dry finish (typical for HA IPAs).

Was disappointed I missed out on the Fluorescent cans. Still have never had that one, so if anyone had an extra can they can spare let me know.

On a positive note they still had Dark Matter Big Hugs coffee in the shop. So I was pumped about that. Cheers!

Stopped in yesterday, head cold be damned, and grabbed tastes of the fluorescent and american elder (along with the big hugs + 2 variants, on tap, but gone at retail); both F and AE were good enough for me, picked up a 4 pack of each for the trip back to Colorado...gonna be a little sad to leave this scene. Probably stop in one last time this coming week to say goodbye to HA. Not sure when I get to come back to Chicago for business...(November 2018? Yikes).

 

I, too loved American Elder. That and Now & Then (which I preferred even more from what I remember) are probably my two favorite IPAs I've had from Half Acre.

 

You, sir, have made the most of it.

 

Yeah he did. I have a feeling one or two of our local breweries may go under without the economic impact he made to the beer scene in Chicagoland....

Yeesh... I guess I have been a lush. But thanks guys, it's really fun to take part in this beer scene drinking frenzy (in moderation, of course) in Chicago. For all its bumps and warts, I love Chicago. Cheers! Hope you all get out to Colorado to check out the beer scene along the Front Range (if you haven't already).

 

Good to hear you've enjoyed your stay here, especially beer-wise. Want to add as well that it's refreshing to see a short term visitor to this great state contributing to the Great Lakes forum as you have, instead of the typical 'which store has the whalez?' post. So cheers to you.

Keeping this post on a HA topic. Picked up some American Elder today and I'm enjoying it very much. There were still stacks of it at the store in case anyone is still interested in getting some. Was a bit disappointed Florescent sold out yesterday as I was a huuuge fan of it the first go-round. Love the nelson hops. Hopefully, they make it again in 2018. And just as some random aside while visiting the HA store today, HA always has the best merch in the beer business imo. Cheers.

 

Fluorescent was great. Elder is even better.

Scored a pour of Big Hugs today after missing out on release day then a trip to Binnys netted me a few 4 packs. Nice run tonight
