First time in San Diego and first time in California, ever. Where should I go? Planning on Modern Times, Abnormal, and Society. Anywhere else I MUST hit?

Anything non beer related is welcome too...food, places to see, fun stuff etc Trying to not just drink beer the whole trip...need more non beer recommendations

Know this is is probably a repeat post but wasn't sure if there was anything new or updated since the last posts.

    Thanks

I know...just searched LA and found a bunch of threads but most were from 2014, hence why I made a new thread.

Glad the San Diego thread is updated...thanks!

It's not updated, I haven't done a new version in well over a year and have no plans to do so. Basic list of essentials (in no particular order):
    Modern Times
    Pizza Port
Alesmith (make sure to go into the Anvil & Stave room)
Toronado (hit North Park Beer Co, Rip Current North Park, Eppig, and Tiger Tiger while you're in the area)
    Hamiltons

Aside from those, there's plenty of good spots and much of the info in the old thread is still relevant.

Food-wise, getting some fish tacos is the obvious answer...what part of town are you staying in and are there any particular types of food you like or dislike?

Is the Toronado in San Diego different than the Toronado in San Francisco?

Staying in Bay Park...like most food - anything with meat. Haha. Not big on italian or mexican.

Yes. Without getting into a ton of nuance, the staff are generally regarded as friendlier (although I've never had a bad experience at Toro SF) and it lacks some of the gruff vibe of the original. That said, the tap list is usually great and it serves as a central point for the North Park bar/tasting room corridor.

If you like sushi and want to splurge, Sushi Ota is nearby and the best in San Diego. Not cheap, but phenomenal. If you're into ramen, Menya Ultra is fanfuckingtastic and not too far away. There will be a wait but if you're solo, you'll probably be able to snag a seat at the counter without waiting too terribly long. If you go into North Park, eat at Carnitas Snack Shack and you'll definitely get your fill of meat.

Not being a fan of Mexican knocks out a lot of recommendations since that's more or less our signature cuisine.

I mean I like Mexican I just don't go crazy for it I guess...I hear the tacos and burritos are great so I will try em but just not a huge fan in general. Probably because I'm picky and usually just like meat and cheese and sauce on my mexican - not much else.

    2 more questions:

    1. What is the difference between the 2 Modern Times locations and which one should I go to if I just hit one?

    2. Is Abnormal good? My friend told me to go there but haven't heard many people mention it.

The Lomaland Fermentorium has more taps, coffee bar, more available stuff to go, more space to sit. Definitely hit that, especially since it's easier to get to from Bay Park.

Good spot but out of the way and the house beers on draft can be hit and miss. If you have a car and plenty of time, it's worth hitting, but I wouldn't consider it essential with only three days to spend in San Diego.

    Thanks

I'm getting overwhelmed...really need to narrow it down. Only 3 days and don't just wanna go to breweries all day because I'm a lightweight and I'll die and want to stop drinking after the 3rd brewery in a day. Wish I knew what the absolute must hit top 5 places were...everyone is recommending me like 20 places. Haha.

It is all subjective, but in your list of 5 I would definitely put Modern Times and Alesmith somewhere in there. MT because of the vibe, draft list, togo options. Alesmith because of Anvil&Stave (also it is my favorite SD brewery).

If you are staying in BayPark, there is Coronado Brewing right there. They don't get a ton of love on BA but I think they are solid and sometimes very good. It is rather large and they recently opened up a kitchen.
Modern Times should be your #1 spot.

Do I need to hit Alesith and Alesmith Anvil & Stave? Or just Anvil & Stave?

Anvil & Stave is inside of Alesmith.

    Well that’s convenient. Ha.

Thought it was 2 separate locations. Definitely hitting Modern Times, Alesmith, and Societe.

Is it worth it to hit Stone Escondido or is the Bistro just as good?

The Bistro is just as good in terms of beer and atmosphere, but the little garden they have at the Escondido location is quite pretty to walk around in.
