Make sure you get your chop with the fat on. Far superior than the option without.

Gutmann, for me the hefeweizen is the gold standard of hefeweizen's. Not overly carbonated, nice balance of clove and banana in the aroma and on the tongue amongst an underlying fresh cereal grain quality. Excellent head retention and goes down like liquid gold.

The weizenbock was a new one for me. Excellent banana and clove aroma and taste with a subtle not unpleasant note of alcohol warmth in the finish. Banana coming through strong as it warms.Carbonation is not over the top (i find vitus too much). This stuff reminds of schneider hopfenweisse minus the hop foward character.

Between hopfenweisse and this, i wouldn't look for any other pale weizenbock. The hoppiness of hopfenweisse and the amped banana yeasty ester quality of Gutmann have covered the whole flavour spectrum for me.

All i need to find is some Mahr's Der Weisse bock and I'm sorted for dark weizenbocks too!

    Prost!

Interesting!! Where did you source these? I’m eagerly awaiting a beers of Europe delivery which should land Tuesday that has plenty bocks in it and Dunkels for these winter nights.

^ Gutmann is the weissbier that Mahr's serves at their brewery now. They stopped making their own back in June I believe. I really, really miss the Mahr's weiss, but the one from Gutmann is really good, too.

Based on their website, it doesn't look like Mahr's makes any wheat beers anymore.

Their site doesn't show it anymore: https://www.mahrs.de
Earlier this summer they posted on Facebook that they planned to discontinue their weiss and serve the one from Gutmann instead. There was more to it than that, but I can verify that's what they were serving in August. You can probably reach out to them on Facebook - Stephan's pretty active and speaks English very well.

I have to admit that I didn't really pay attention to the label before opening this and actually thought this was just a Bock rather than a Doppelbock at first. Clear, deep amber coloration with visible carbonisation. I think it's still kinda nice, not great though, but I can't really compare it to previous years because this is the first I've had.

It's actually actually pretty mellow at first, turning just a little bit harsh in the aftertaste. Not a very complex Doppelbock, certainly doesn't hold a candle to Celebrator. Dominated by sweet, caramelly, biscuity malt and toffee with just a tiny hint of hoppy grassiness coming through.

I’ve just enjoyed a Julius Echter Weissbier Hell.

    Magnificent.

Actually, the longer I drink this, the more I feel that it has a kind of unplesant boozyness to it and is also just a little too sweet. Having a Weihenstephaner Vitus now, which is MUCH better.

I just had a Weihenstephaner Korbinian for the first time in a while. The color was much darker than the Salvator, dark ruby-brown, and it was rich with a good amount of fruitiness to it. Really good stuff and my local store sells it for $2.99 per bottle. I like Andechs and Celebrator a little bit more, but the value of the Korbinian is hard to beat.

I never had the Korbinian, although I will certainly seek it out. If you think $3 is cheap though, that stuff goes for less than half of that in Germany . Same with Andechs Doppelbock and Celebrator, really.

On the other hand though, a bottle of Narwhal is 7,50€ here, so, yeah... And yes, that's the normal 12oz bottle, not the fancy BA bomber or anything.

Well, one shop sells them at that price. I think they're crazy, personally. However, I've never seen it cheaper than 4,50€ either, with still seems crazy expensive for a normal Imperial Stout. I love Narwhal, but for that price I might as well buy KBS.

How long have you been drinking German beer?

(I am facetious because Salvator is well known as the original Doppelbock)

Well, I never liked German beer very much :stuck_out_tongue:. This is also the first time that I've actually seen this at a supermarket. Which kind of stresses my point that not all of Germany is Bavaria.

No question about that at all, but Salvator is such an iconic beer that it sounds funny to hear that the label wasn't recognized.

@grantcty -- Snowcrash's Salvator appears much more clear than ours did.

Most of what we pay $3 - $5 (Schneider is verrückt at $4.99) is .90 to 1.10€ in a Getränkemärkte - so sad... but in Ami-land we do have cheaper benzene...

Not "new" necessarily, but we got a fresh drop of Ayinger pils in my area. Man is that beer wonderful. It's every bit the beer that the Rothaus is and it's even slightly more aligned with my personal tastes. With Herren Pils not being an option, I feel it's almost an acceptable substitute. The mouthfeel isn't as thick and the hops aren't as fresh tasting, but it's at least in the ballpark.

We just started getting Ayinger Pils in my area recently and I couldn't agree more, it's excellent. I wrote a pretty glowing review of it a few weeks ago. I've never had Herren Pils, so I can't compare, but the Ayinger was thick and full bodied, almost chewy to me. Still very easy to drink though. I thought it was one of the most complex pilsners I've ever had.

The best way for me to describe Herren is that it has an almost nitro or cask like texture, but with none of the downsides. Some Czech pilsners have that same texture, but most German ones are lighter and more effervescent. I had the Ayinger one on tap over the summer and it also has it, although I'm not sure the bottled version truly captures it the same way. Close enough, though. I'd rank it as my 2nd favorite pils, although admittedly I'm more of a helles or "lagerbier" fan than pils in most instances. The fact that I can buy it at a store I can walk to is pretty awesome, too.
