You are mixing two distinctly different issues into one thing, and ONLY one of them can actually compromise glass integrity. That was the one which was addressed in a recall of product.
For your question about the image. You would have to take that up with the bottle manufacturer as to why mold ____ is showing more surface imperfections than mold ____. I might impress upon you that the mold itself is starting to show its age.
There's a host of descriptors, and molded glass fun facts over here https://sha.org/bottle/body.htm
The kind of detail on the bottles being discussed here specifically is far more common than you think.

If you want to be the one who sends a whole semi of glass back over a couple bottles that are not physically compromised. You can pull that trigger. But, first. What are the range of specs for visible glass imperfections where it veers towards becoming a danger? SIerra Nevada is not exactly a fly by night operation, so I'm pretty sure someone there has probably thought rather deeply about this at some point in their 30+ years of doing it, and with the recall they had earlier in the year. You can bet their glass supplier got a wicked talking to, and hopefully billed for lost profits.

Not quite accurate since this allowed us to read some "molded glass fun facts" provided by @MostlyNorwegian :wink:

SN has always been super cool, glad they are working with you. They don't want any bottle issues and I am sure they will make things right. Again they cannot control stocking issues or shipping but if it was from their end I am sure it will get resolved.

What two issues am I mixing together? My theory was the bottling line, that seems to not be the case, so...? I'm not a glass expert so a little lost with this comment.

Thanks for the info, I do find this interesting. If it's common I can't say I have heard about it often.

This happened to me ages ago with a sixer of Sam Adams Boston Lager. One bottle had a neck that was completely gone, filled with white fuzzy mold and no beer. Guess I didn't notice, since they have the high sides on their packages. One other bottle was cracked, but still with it's contents. The other four were fine. We contacted Sam Adams, they requested some packaging info, and promptly sent a voucher, bottle opener, and a shirt.

    Hello Ronald,

Thank you for taking the time to share this concern with us. We take these emails very seriously and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. As I am sure you know, we work hard to maintain the quality of our beer and package and we extend that commitment to our consumer.

Typically, bottles with glass irregularities never leave the glass manufacturer. They are removed by quality inspection and are never sent to the brewery here. We hold our supplier to a bottle specification that should be adhered to. If our supplier is not adhering to our specifications, it is our responsibility to catch that through audits to ensure that you, the consumer, are receiving a perfect product. To do that, we commissioned a high tech empty glass inspection instrument on-site for both bottling lines. This instrument uses several cameras to look for possible foreign objects, and sidewall defects. It also checks the top of the bottle (finish), and the base and inner sidewall. Then, if anything atypical is noted, the bottle is automatically rejected and discarded. This instrument is checked every 2 hours for accuracy. The dilemma is however, that once it leaves the brewery, accidents may occur during distribution or at retail.

Thanks for providing both the package date code and the glass manufacturer code too, as those will help us look into our records. We also saw the pictures that are posted on Beer Advocate. From these pictures, it appears to be a cosmetic issue only. If you have any additional photos that would help us see what you are noticing here, please send them along. Did any of the bottles leak or lose pressure before you opened them? Of the two that you have already opened, how did they taste? From the package date, these beers are in code and should be fresh. Do you still have the bottles, either empty or unopened, that you saw these marks on? Again, we appreciate your commitment to quality and continued support and I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Cheers!

Thanks for posting the pics....helps clarify the problem. Certainly a bottle manufacturing issue, although SN is still responsible...as a selling party the quality of their supply chain falls on them.

You buy from a retailer, you get home there's a problems with cracked bottles... You bring them back to where you bought em with the receipt. He replaces them, and your happy, then maybe he bitches to the distributor, who might bitch to SN. It's ridiculous fir you go bitch to SN, just my opinion.

Cracked bottles are a potential safety issue, possibly related to manufacturing and not handling. While the chain of ownership goes from consumer to retailer to distributor to brewer, the consumer ABSOLUTELY should notify the brewery directly.

Seriously, a comma, period or capital letter goes a long way. I'm not sure what you have against basic grammar. If you are interested in people reading what you right, you should consider starting a relationship with punctuation.

I keep finding myself going back to this thread out of pure morbid curiosity....to find out what could possibly be said after everything has been said about a few cracked bottles of SNPA. Can we take it any lower than a punctuation rip?? Come on BA...you can do it....:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
