Locals for Locals would be my preference. Granted I did one local to local with someone in NH, which was a great way to get some stuff i normally would not be able to get my hands on. Next best thing than spending to travel to those spots. I'm game after the new year.

Glad I stumbled across this post. I’m very new to trading as well and have been successful seeking out specific beers I’ve wanted to try but wouldn’t mind finding something a little more “casual” in the new year. Anyone looking for a potential partner in the San Diego area let me know!

Am I wrong for assuming that "local to local" would mean your locals (San Diego) for someone else's local (as in my Mid-Atlantic)?

Seems some are taking the LOCAL TO LOCAL as people in the same area as themselves. I read it as My local stuff for your local stuff (normally stuff you and I can't find).

Ah - I have never seen anyone mean local for local as people in the same place. I was trying to be a smart as, but I was honestly confused. Hopefully that was not too rude.

Yea - the locals for locals definitely (generally) means trading with someone who has different distribution, and is interested in trading their locals for your locals, and vise versa.

My post was in reference to the person in San Diego looking for others in San Diego. No harm / foul, brother. No rudeness noted.

    Ah.

I think you may have misread his post. Him saying "Anyone looking for a potential partner in the San Diego area let me know!" is just a way of saying anyone wanting a trading partner in San Diego (who is not in San Diego) should contact him. At least, commonly this is how that would be read.

My head hurts. I need to settle in to work before posting at 0635. Lesson learned.

I'm more interested in trading a few beers with individuals however I wanted to put this out there.

My side gig is working as a Flyfishing Guide and I tie fishing flies commercially as well. On Flyfishing forums we occasionally do a fly swap. How this works is one person volunteers to be the host or "swapmaster". The swap usually consists of twelve participants. Each ties 12 flies one for each participant (11) not counting yourself because you don't need your own fly back, the twelfth fly being an extra for the swapmaster. A date is agreed upon and each participant sends their dozen to the swapmaster along with a self addressed return package and postage. The swapmaster puts together the return package with one fly for each participant and mails them back out.

It's not as complicated as it sounds. I may be way off base here, but I'm wondering if something like this would work for a smaller group of people say a limit of five Each participant would ship five of one beer to the host, including return shipping and each would get four different beers in return. Just something to consider, and I hope I'm not breaking any trading rules by suggesting this, or maybe that is what beer it forward is?

Everyone sending a 6 pack of their local good stuff to be redistributed to all participants would be awesome in my opinion. I would totally be game for that.

Great Idea! If people are using flat-rate boxes, you might be able to up that by just a couple to minimize shipping/beer cost.

That is a cool idea. Shipping costs could add up on the swap master but some solid extras could certainly help offset that.

While the above idea mentioned by @Troutbeerbum would work, it is more expensive than how a standard "Beer it Forward (BIF)" works because you are basically shipping twice the amount of beer that you really need to. Obviously the upside is that you get more of a geographical mix of beers with that single box but I don't know if that is worth the extra hassle and cost. It is much simpler and cheaper to get a group of people and pair them up so that they are just shipping to each other. These pairs then rotate throughout the life of the BIF. So while you will not have a lot of diversity (as far as getting beers from different areas of the country) in each box, over time as you are paired with different individuals you get to sample a lot. This is how a BIF typically functions and it would achieve what a lot of people in this thread are after at a cheaper cost.

I certainly think that BIF style is the way to go in general for locals type trades - but I think doing the above (more complicated swap) would be cool once a year or so. Totally get (and agree) where you are coming from, though.

No doubt it's probably more work than it's worth. Just a way to get a wide regional selection all in one box. But with the amount of beer currently available that you could get from one trade it's kind of unnecessary, Not to mention it kind of defeats the purpose of doing a really simple local for local trade. Just threw it out there as food for thought.

I'm liking both ideas...anyone here wanna start a BIF? I've always wanted to try one, but never saw a posting early enough. We can do it super classically, with one person who has the list of everyone in the BIF, and then gives ppl who they're shopping to (not always the same person who you're getting from), with th hints and banter and guessing games following that for folks to figure out who they're getting from. And ofc everyone posting their hauls at the end.

The 5 person group trade also sounds great. Then everyone's out shipping a 4 pack, and if they do so with a prepaid return label inside it should be too much of a hassle for the trademaster

I'd be cool running one. I've been in a couple and it's a lot of fun. I also like organizing stuff like this as well. If anyone is interested, shoot me a message and reply to this. We can see how much interest there is before posting on the main BIF/LIF board. I would think something like 120-200 ounces. A nice box but nothing crazy for the first time.

Also, if anyone else wants to run it, go for it. Just figured I'd throw my hat in to help.
