Picked up a 32 oz. can of Mission St. Double IPA from Trader Joe's.

The front of the can says it's "San Diego Style" and on the back it says it's "BREWED AND CANNED BY: MIISION BREWERY, SAN DIEGO, CA". Notice the spelling; that's not my typo... M-I-I-S-I-O-N.

So, is this really brewed by the Mission Brewing in San Diego that we're familiar with, or are the producers of this beer trying to mislead us? I Google searched Mission St. Double IPA and entries both here on BA and Untapped list it as a beer from Steinhaus Brewing in Monrovia (L.A. County), and it appears that this is a Trader Joe's exclusive (the raters all got there beers there). Ironically, the City of Monrovia... happens to be where Trader Joe's corporate office is.

I want to think the can can't lie and that this was indeed brewed by Miision Brewery (if not Mission Brewery) in San Diego, but then the Google findings along with the geographical coincidence of Trader Joe's corporate offices causes some doubt. And if it is truly Miision Brewery, can they really be allowed to get away with the near copy-cat name?

The fact that they’re in 32 ounce cans makes me think it’s Mission Brewing in SD. It’s such a unique format, not many other people even have the capability. I can’t even thing of another brewer, besides Mission, that releases in 32s.

Can you post a pic of the can?

A buddy of mine works at TJ corporate, he told me this was made by Mission in SD.

It’s been a while since I’ve purchased any of TJ’s “house” beers, but I thought they were contract brewed by Firestone Walker. I’m guessing that contract is no longer?

I think that stopped a couple years ago. I believe after Firestone they went to Golden Road, maybe they still do some stuff, but it seems like Mission is doing at least some stuff.

They actually get some good beers. Red poppy usually sells for less then at lost Abbey and they get some MT Stuff. Not my local stop when I want to buy beer but if I am there I always take a look.

No cooler at my TJ. IPAs sitting out in open shelve. Some bottles have no date. Bottles with dead hops sitting on the bottom waiting to float?

If I remember correctly, DCGuns only drinks IPA's, so Trader Joe's isn't the best option, but when I do see fresh modern time or Pizza port it can be a great find.

My location has a small cooler, but I buy MT off the shelf, usually the seasonals or Accumulated Knowledge. Have never perceived quality issues. Priced right and you can get singles, with no markup. City of the Dead Nitro 4pk is $2 cheaper there than at my go-to bottle shop.

Trader Joe's doesn't burn bridges. Business is business. They contract with multiple breweries. FW cut the cord due to capacity issues I believe a year or two ago. Yet I bought a bottle of XXI yesterday in PB for $12. Hmmmm.

@KevSal I have a quick reply. He said currently the only other Hardywood he sees in the database is a co-branded Trader Joes Hibiscus tripel. He listed some previous entries but none of them are Cassowary. He also said each store has a ton of leeway as to what they order/stock and that is determined by that section leader. I know the guy Jason at my local/walking distance TJ and he orders a decent variety. Biggest downside is no cold storage.
