The last sentence doesn't surprise me at all. Long lines of beer geeks smack dab in the middle of a small, quaint village surrounded by businesses never seemed like a good fit to me. They need to go the Sixpoint and other brewery way and sell on-line and eliminate the creation of and waiting in lines. Easier said than done though.

Gotta agree. I got 2 4-packs, split one with my brother in law in a plastic cup and it didn’t even matter. Fantastic.

From what I have heard the permit thing is true. I see that as good thing though, as it would be so easy for the village to just deny the permit application. Maybe they aren't so anti afterall.

They had 2 cops right on the street outside during this release, so that lends some credence to the permit thing.

Does anybody know if any cases made it to today, and if so, are they selling cans from the back room? I cannot find an answer on this.

Shaun Hill says basically the same thing in an interview, bemoaning that Vt. has become a brand and that some Vt. brewers (not named by him) need to brew to the quality that got Vt. the rep. in the first place.

And I have stopped taking vacations to Vt. for beer, and no longer care to have friends bring any back for me.. Sand City and a host of NY brewers are putting out beer equally as good if not better.

Who is refusing to give Sand City the respect it deserves? Literally no one has said anything negative, the only thing that has been said is it's not in the super top tier of breweries pumping out magic in every can.

PS, the location card is super lame. Munson/Charlton and Canton aren't exactly breathtaking locations that must be seen, imparting their local beauty upon the beer that's brewed there.

So Hill does NOT name The Alchemist, but you're saying he "basically said" Heady and Focal "don't stack up to the quality and are over-hyped"? Are we going to ignore that Heady built the VT reputation, not Hill Farmstead? So which one is it, the Alchemist no longer brews to the quality that built the VT reputation or he wasn't talking about The Alchemist at all?

I don't know if that's entirely correct. While govt in general can be and usually is extremely corrupt, I would think that if permits were denied for no reason at all that sand city would file a descrimination lawsuit. Not to mention we don't have insight into when permits are filed how long it takes for them to be approved, how many are actually denied, etc. What we do have insight into is that the brewery has been closed for about a month straight and before that had several weeks of open and closed nonsense...essentially the town blocking them from opening back up and blocking them from selling thier product.

The permit thing is designed to be a thorn in sand city's side. Sand city is also hiring security for the line to show the town that they don't condone any drinking on the streets...also unneeded expense for the brewery (not sure if town forces it or if sand city does that as a sign of good faith).

The only positive signs would be the brewery reopening or perhaps being able to fill growlers (I assure you, they arent skipping the sale of growler fills because they are lazy)...other than that, its been nothing but downhill for a while. The only way they can sell beer is via tap takeovers.

I think you may be mixing up 2 separate rants.

You do know that there are quite a few vt breweries aside from hill and alchemist...Lawson, foam, Foley, fiddlehead, lost nation, switchback, magic hat...I'm sure there are more but don't feel like googling.

This is kind of a guess but I think guttersnipe and Southdown are the only 2 cans left. They were definitely out of infinity and playboy Sunday and I’m assuming Luca baby is done too.

Definitely recognize there's a ton of VT breweries, but cavedave's Hill "quote" was in response to a Comparison Ford reference to Heady and Focal.

Gotta agree with @cosmicevan on the permit thing. I did not construe that as a positive development for Sand City.

The Village requiring them to get permits now is definitely not a positive development. I am heavily involved in obtaining, monitoring and closing out permits for my firm’s clients - from environmental to construction peemits and everything in between - from the Village to State level across LI. The local (villages and towns) munis are notoriously hard to deal with as it is their method of controlling what happens under their munis jurisdictional border. They have the right to deny any permit as long as it for a sound reason. If they blatantly deny permits for political reasons then a business/applicant has the right to challenge/appeal the decision.

Basically, Northport is trying to curtail SC’s ability to conduct their business in an effort to have them conform to the Village’s expectations. SC can appeal to the Town of Smithtown if they determine the denial of permits is adversely impacting their business for political reasons.

Not gonna speak for Shaun Hill, you can read the interview yourself and draw your own conclusions. And he never said anything negative in the way you said it, just in the way of reminding fellow bnrewers that it was careful attention to quality that made Vt. a beer destination to begin with. Taste is subjective, and I like NY beer as well and in many cases better than what I used to get from Vt. YMMV.
