This is my general rule now, as I have experienced this with many beers...one day I could love something and the next day meh and vice versa.

Picked up a 12-pack of cans today. 4/27/18 best by, lol. Didn't get any last year, and I'm enjoying it more than I remembered. Definitely the juiciest beer I've had without any real fruit or wine flavors, and with a nice creamy mouthfeel, too.

I've enjoyed this the last few years and this year's has been better than I ever recall. I find it kind of silly if them to not brew this year round.

Maybe they're looking at their sales figures for Sunshine Pils after it went year-round? Haven't seen any SP fresh since that happened...

That was a concern I had when I read that they decided to make Sunshine Pils a year-round beer.

One of the benefits of seasonal releases is that you are (at least initially) assured of obtaining fresh product.

The other plus of Sunshine Pils was (and is) that those beers all seemed to taste the same; no batch to batch variation that I ever personally experienced (or read about). Nugget Nectar is mysteriously a different product altogether in regards to batch to batch variation.

    Cheers!

Seasonal releases do force you buy a beer before it's gone. If it's always available, even if you like the beer, you can always say "I'll just buy it next time.".

Also, there is the whole "absence makes the heart grow fonder" aspect to seasonal or limited release beers.

Both Cultivator and Sunshine Pils were taken out of the Hop Cycle as seasonals because they weren't really "hoppy" beers (although SP does have some hoppiness to it for a Pilsner). My thought was that SP was made year round probably because it was a Pilsner and could be considered a gateway to craft beer. I can't see NN ever being a year round, but who knows? There's a lot of tough competition out there today and breweries are trying to put out what the consumers want.

I hear what you are saying here but from a local perspective there is just so much competition here. The following are locally brewed year round Pilsners: Sly Fox Pikeland Pils, Stoudts Pils, Neshaminy Creek Trauger Pils, St. Benjamins Procim Pils, Victory Prima Pils, Double Nickel Pilsner, 2SP, etc. Is there truly a need for Sunshine Pils to be a year-round beer?
Hell, if making Nugget Nectar a year-round beer will enable Troegs to properly brew this beer from batch to batch I would be all for it. If not, then I wonder if this beer should even be a seasonal beer anymore. There is plenty of hoppy beers being produced (both locally and non-locally) that are consistently brewed from batch to batch so I wonder why I should ever 'gamble' my money on Nugget Nectar? Why shouldn't I just spend my money on some other brewery's hoppy beer with the assurance that the beer will be a consistent product?

    Cheers!

Sucks you got a bad 6 pack but I'm halfway through my case best by 3 days later than yours and going back for another case this or next week. The stuff I'm drinking is fantastic.

One note here about Sunshine, at the risk of furthering the derailment of this thread..

I'm not saying that it happened on the same exact date, but I'm pretty sure Sunshine Pils became year round near or after they had moved When In Doubt to year round and had been framing that as their "I don't do craft, what can you give me?" beer.

Seems odd if they felt they needed Sunshine for that when they seemingly already had a beer to fill that slot.

Yup! As I posted previously: bad for me.
I will send you the same message I sent Keith: good for you!

As I stated in reply to @TongoRad in post #27 of this thread:

When Nugget Nectar is 'on' it is a joy to drink.

    When it is 'off' well....:slight_frown:

Non-cheers to this batch to batch variation crap!!

You can't get When In Doubt in cans/bottles.

Right you are. Was thinking strictly tap room/brewery only. I think they have bottled When In Doubt but certainly not all the time and I don't believe they've ever distributed it.

    Thanks.

Side note: As much as I like their beer, I can't recall the last time I've actually bought their beer other than at their place. Kind of weird...

Picked up a case of nugget necan cans in NJ Yestersay. $45. Best by 5/9/2018. Definitely something wrong with this batch. Hoping it gets better with time. Strong alcohol sting with no hoppy sensations at all. Pretty disappointed overall. Wish I would have bought 6 rather than 24...

My guess is that this beer was packaged on 1/9/18 and maybe it just needs more conditioning time?
Rut roh, that is consistent with my 6-pack batch which has a best by date of 4/25/18. Maybe you bought a 'bad' batch just like I did.

'Bad' batches of Nugget Nectar suck!!

just for science I picked up a 12 pack of cans same best by, 5/9.I will say the bottles I have with a best by of 4/27 are a tad better. The cans aren't terrible but lack that pop of the hops I get from my bottles.

That is consistent with my bottled batch which has a best by date of 4/25/18. The beer is cleanly brewed but unfortunately it is devoid of hop aroma (and hop flavor).

    Cheers!

I really wanted to try this beer at the brewery last year (it would have been my first experience tasting it) but was told that they weren't happy with the way that the batch turned out and pulled it. So, no tasting for me. I did finally pick up a 6 pack of bottles earlier this week (I don't know the best by date, though) and tried one last night. Although I have nothing to compare it to, I thought it was a well-made beer. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass, it had a mild hop aroma and a 1 finger head. The taste had a mellow, but not overbearing, hop flavor with a sweetness on the back end (not a distinct mango flavor, just a sweet flavor). Overall, I thought it was good.
