IMO that is good news that they pulled that beer from their tap handles. I wish they would make similar decisions to dump 'bad' batches vs. bottling/canning them anyway. I suppose unsatisfied customers that are not at the taproom is 'better' for them?

    Cheers!

That's the batch I have. If you find another batch that is better feel free to PM me. I'd like to try it.

Sorry to hear that, Jack. It just hit NJ and I'm drinking one now. Mine was only bottled two days after yours, best by 4-26, and it definitely has that nice hoppy pop to it. It remains a mystery what causes the variation, it seems, but this one passed my audition and I will be going back for more very soon.

Damn..I wish I checked here first. I grabbed some 5/09 cans tonight and I can confirm. Avoid unless you enjoy some lead pencil twang.

And it remains a mystery to me as well (as we discussed previously).

The 'bigger' mystery to me is why this crap occurs year after year. I would think that after x years the brewers at Troegs would have figured how to consistently brew this beer by now.

A half full glass aspect is what @jgido759 posted where Troegs had a off batch so they pulled it from being poured at the Troegs taproom. What I still find vexing is that Troegs has zero issues packaging (bottling./canning) the off batches that they produce. Frankly I find this aspect to be unethical. Why would they continues to bottle/can Nugget Nectar beers that are off? If you have an answer to this question I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

    Cheers!

I was always under the impression that it had more to do with the limited year round availability of Nugget Hops.

Wow! Your batch is even worse than the 'bad' batch I got. My sole complaint is a lack of hop aroma/flavor. It sounds like you have an off-flavor in your batch.

Non-cheers to this continuing crap with Nugget Nectar!!

as a yearly consumer of Nugget Nectar, i've found that the dry hopping fades very rapidly in this ale. faster than any other hoppy beer i've ever had. i have always noticed a significant drop off in taste 7 days after bottling and canning.

In the past I have purchased non-off cases of Nugget Nectar and FWIW I have never noticed what you are describing here.

In contrast when I have purchased off batches of Nugget Nectar they sucked even when they were fresh.

In other words, in my opinion, this is a problem of poor quality in terms of production vs. being just a beer aging issue.

    Needless to say buy YMMV.

It's not even here yet and I'm already suspicious. My limited experience with this mirrors Jacks. I've had some amazing beers and some not so amazing, and why this is so up and and down I haven't a clue. I'd never buy serious volume, I'd go one 6 at a time and check dates. Being in NC it's pretty limited here, it's not around long.

    Dale, that is prudent!

As you are aware in the not too distant past we Pennsylvanians purchased our beers at Retail Beer Distributors by the case. I can't tell you how many times I told a prayer as I walked my case of Nugget Nectar up to the cashier and purchased my case of Nugget Nectar; hoping that I did not have 24 bottles of 'off' Nugget Nectar.

My advice is to not buy more than a 6-pack of this beer at a time.

    Cheers!

    Howdy Jack,

My guess is that "the beer falls within the brewing standards" would be part of the answer you might get. I also think that most non BA folk that drink NN just dont notice or just move on after spending $14 for a "bad" beer. Since all the NN that is released gets sold( I never see it into the late spring) Troegs does not seem to care that they have off batches.

    Enjoy

That does indeed appear to be the case, at least for the context of bottled/canned beers.

Why they can't reliably brew this beer remains a mystery.

    Cheers!

As far as I can tell we're still a few weeks from distro here. What dates could be verified as worth buying? Not sure if we get older beers or newer cannings. Last year was good though, but it didn't last very long.

These batch variations (in the same brewing season) of a beer thats been brewed for as long as NN has seem crazy. Just bought a 6 pack bottles BB 5/5/18. Any one had that batch that can comment as to quality?

This is actually not the case. Tröegs has very high standards (at least from what I have witnessed) when it comes to anything at or leaving the brewery. You may want to write to the brewery to make them known about your opinion instead of just posting it every other post on here. It might help if they know, don't you think?

I have communicated with Troegs folks in the past on their lack of consistency in brewing Nugget Nectar. All indications are they simply do not care; a thought that was expressed by @Giantspace above.

    Cheers!

    ^^^ This.

My local has it on the beer engine, nitro, and CO2. Good stuff, that. NN has never disappointed me. Doubt that it ever will.

Accusing Troegs of being inept brewers and unethical businessmen because YOU think that Nugget Nectar is inconsistent is laughable. Add to that the fact that you are in the vast minority with your opinion, and it looks like you have an ax to grind. That's what I'd put my money on, if I were a betting man.

@JackHorzempa @jzellinger others... I haven't consumed as much NN as many of you, so don't really have my own opinion. But I'm typically willing to give brewers the benefit of the doubt and attribute differences in taste from beer to beer, particularly in hop-forward styles, to handling by the distributor /retailer/customer, the beer's age, the weather, serving temp, crop harvest, etc. Do you really think Troegs is brewing it differently or has QC problems?
