i don't know the true answer to the question but i imagine Lagunitas may be getting favorable pricing on their barrels & in exchange 'advertising' the whiskey brand associated with the barrels directly on their beer labels. 'Highwest'ified / 'Willett'ized.

I am probably wrong, but I would say economy of scale is at play here at least to an extent.

If people pay they will keep charging. Im surprised the price does not keep inching up till they hit the max price anyone will pay and still sell out fast.

By selling direct to the consumer these breweries make shit tons of $. I cant speak to their costs but what does it cost to make/can these $24 4x16? Cant imagine its more than $10 and I would think even less than that. They cut the distributors out and cant piss off the retail outlets because they are the retail outlet. Customers come to them on the set schedule.

    Enjoy

possibly but 1 reason i guessed in my post above yours is - we know that Lagunitas lost the ability to use Highwest's spent barrels going forward. that's why they went to Willett barrels. & if i understood correctly, Highwest & Ballast Point now have the same parent. barrel aged V@S utilized Highwest barrels. the 4pk cost is $14. not as cheap as Lagunitas pricing but not outrageous by Ballast Point standards. guessing through common interest, BP is getting the barrels very cheap or maybe even free.

Better than the High Westified, IMO. You get more coffee out of this beer in addition to the barrel and booze. This beer is truly an anomaly. A sixer of 12.6% ABV barrel-aged stout for 15$ in New York? How can you pass that up?

Just opened a Willetized with a bottle of Eclipse Willet at a bottle share last week. The Lagunitas is a great beer, but didn't hold a candle to the Eclipse. Price is a lot better on the Willetized!

Yeah the 50/50 Eclipse stuff I’ve had have all been really good. I can imagine that eclipse bottle was much more complex and rich and would certainly expect it to be more so at the two different price points though for sure. 50/50 stuff is just so damn expensive. I’m actually going to a San Francisco Beer Week event whete they’re having a bunch of 50/50 bottles so it’s a great time to try some stuff that I really can’t justify spending the money on otherwise.

My local had this on draught a while back. When I saw it, I asked the beer manager about how soon he'd think it would kick. He said, "It'll be here for a while." I was all like, "WTF?". And then he said, "Nobody cares about it because it's Lagunitas." Again, I was all like, "WTF?"

    And that's my Willetized story.

This was a couple months ago, and, unfortunately, no, it has long since kicked. He always has one or two drool-worthy beers that nobody except a handful of old school beer nerds know about. For instance, he had on a keg of Andechs Doppelbock that lasted WAY longer than it should have. Stupid haze-obsessed twats. More for me, I guess.

I have similar experiences at a local beer bar. There’ll occasionally be a keg of something that I feel like I have all to myself. Most recently it was Dupont Avec Les Bon Voeux, but it’ll happen with Tipopils, Schlenkerla Eiche, and so on.

Makes me feel special, really. Like I did when I first got into craft beer. I, truthfully, get as giddy as a schoolgirl when I look at the beer menu because I know there will probably be a hidden treasure somewhere on it that only me a a handful of others have any idea about.

What was the bottling date? There was a second drop around here last year and I was wondering if there would be one this year.

Really wondering if this is sign of a second drop. Got a bottling date? I still have a couple from when we got it a couple months ago but the beer is too dark to read through to see the date on the neck.

Really solid beer, but not as good as their High West-ified.
