Hmm, interesting. I haven't heard that one before, but I'm not too familiar with the overall system here.

What's your workflow from taking the image from the camera until you click "upload" on BA's site?

I never get there, I try to add a beer and when it says upload image it takes me to a picture of He-Man saying the link is missing.

Oh, that's strange. And not something I know remotely enough to help with.

Exactly, the website/forum should be able to resize the pic automatically.

    Cheers!

Did you refresh the page before trying to upload a pic?

You are using a pic storage site like Imgur, right? You can't use pics from your mobile directly .

Desktop, laptop, mobile, you still need a hosting site to link to your pics.

I agree. I would be nice if the default was just the brewery's logo that was placed there until someone uploaded a picture of the specific beer (if it's not a draft only offering).

And again. The site that I find easiest to use, for uploading pics of beers and places , https://bulkresizephotos.com.

Imgur, is for uploading pics in forum posts. Sorry for misleading you , SomethingClever.

I've always uploaded beer and places pics from my pc. I think only the pics that are inserted into a thread post have to be linked from a third party hosting site.

Yeah , I used that site to get the right dimensions but still got the message that the file was too large. What I mentioned with Google Photo might work, but I don't have any photos left of the beers that need them.
    Ex :
    ORIGINAL PHOTO (6016 x 4000) : 11.7Mb | To Google & saved back to files (941 x 631) : 109kb| Original, rotated & resized (Via Windows Paint*) (150 x 300) : 62.3kb | Google copy , rotated, & resized (150 x 300) : 18.5kb

    EDITED PHOTO** (6016 x 4000) : 4.16 Mb | To Google & saved back to files (941 x 631) : 112kb | Edited Photo, rotated & resized (Via Windows Paint*) (150 x 300) : 77.0kb | Google copy , rotated, & resized (150 x 300) : 18.3kb

*D'oh! Why didn't I think of using Widows before? A lot simpler. It does work, as it turns out.

As you can see, the X x Y isn't the only thing. It's how much information is there. I use the Fine (Large) setting,JPG only, so my originals are 10-14+Mb . In RAW (if I use it) they're usually 18-22Mb Yeah, my sensor is 24.2Mb, so ~ same as yours.

    So... the process is :
    1) Upload to Google Photo
    2) Save that^ back to files
    3)Open that^ with Windows Paint, & resize
    4)Save to files

    The photo used above:
** Darkened about 10%, so the sunny area wouldn't be entirely burnt out.

I expected you to have a thorough reply back, and I was not disappointed! Love the description.

Before I begin to respond, I'm curious - what photo editing software do you use?

Okay. Sounds like a good work flow although I'm shocked that you're ending up with 77.0kb sized photos even after Google Drive resized them. What sort of original resolution are you working with?

Per your workflow step by step process, I'm going to suggest step 3 gets replaced with:
    3. Try uploading and using the resizeyourimage.com tool and set to the 300x150 pixel size.

I know I've hit on that website a half dozen times, but I'm genuinely curious if it provides its own file compression. If you're against website applications, then we may have to discuss other possibilities. I believe that the site I recommended also compresses the files just a touch without losing a significant amount of detail, helping deliver a file within the size constraints. I'd like to test that out with your 77.0kb photo.

Mothergoose03 is right - for uploading pictures of beers (or places) they must be uploaded through your PC. I suppose if you have something like DropBox and it looks like a local directory, that would work. Not sure if you can upload from your phone, never tried. You do have to host pictures you are posting in forums though.

I was wondering, so tried it with same photo. It worked & got down to 7.62kb. It could go lower, if I lowered the quality.
Maybe there was some issue when I was trying it? The times I tried, was all within about 6 weeks. 'Course I still don't know if BA would accept it. One of the 4 times I tried to upload to BA, I had a photo below the limit, & it still didn't work.

Windows Photo. They dumbed it down ...er... "improved" it last August  , but it's still usable.

As high as I can get, short of RAW . "Fine" is the camera setting. I re-tried the beer photos
on "Medium" & "Basic", & it still didn't work, then. (~ a year ago)
Tried the (150 x300) 77kb photo. I forgot that issue with the site. It pops in there at 90 x 180 , & won't resize to 150 x 300 . 110 x 218 is as far as it will go . Guessing that the photo has to be above a certain size to work.

The 77kb photo if you want to try it, though I don't know if it will still be there, having gone through Imgur:stuck_out_tongue:. :

    [Ed :] Nope. Saves as a fraction of the Imgur(320 x 240) size : 120 x 240/ 4.83kb.

    I love your thoroughness.

Okay, let's try this: looks like you're loading your Windows Photo resized into the resizeyourimage link which is providing funky sizing.Next time, do not load in your resized photo - load in the original high quality JPEG. Set the height to 300 pixels, and width to 150 pixel, center on logo (zooming in and out as necessary), and save. See if that photo quality puts you in a workable area per Beer Advocate's requirements. The site should give you a run-down on file format size before you even download it.

I'm curious if the Windows Photo application is resizing it to an unusable size per BA's requirements (300x150). In other words, it's resizing to a file size that isn't possible to reach a clean 300x150 pixels - as required by BA.

Hi Harrison, thank for your help.
Here is an example of a beer I've reviewed that I have been unable to upload a pic for. Doubly frustrating in this instance as I got a 'first' by adding this beer onto BA, and it does have a pretty fancy lable that illustrates a key point I made in my review, and the listing still lacks an image on it.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/44503/318763/?ba=JonnoWillsteed#review

The actual 330ml bottle dimensions are 6*23Cm. FWIW, to me, that's the generic/standard 330ml bottle. I've taken a pic with my mobile, put that on my Desktop, and not altered it. The image File Properties are:
    Size: 1.29MB
    Dimensions: 1836x3624 [W*H]
    Resolution: 72dpi [both axes]
    Bit Depth: 24
    Compression: [blank]
    Resolution unit: 2
    Colour representation: sRGB

I understand your point re: 'not uploading the original by accident' - no, that's not the case. The original file name on my phone is mostly numbers that = a time-stamp - for the attempted edit I rename the image file with the beer brand/name.
re: H/W/pixel-count. This might be getting towards the heart of the problem. TBH I don't quite recall if I adjust by dimensions or pixels. I'd usually* just use the Microsoft Paint programme and 1) crop unnecessary back-ground 2) Progressively lower the resolution until the resulting file-size is small enough. I'm vague on this as I haven't attempted doing this recently as it takes time and often doesn't end up as uploadable anyway.
Interesting point you make re: upping pixel size vs cutting image quality. On the face of it, as a non-tech-wizz those sound the same to me. ... so maybe that's where the problem lies.

Anyway for now I'll post this, just to lay out my starting point.

    * But pls note I have also tried one or two of the suggested image sites/apps and faced the same problems.
