Pumking is the furthest you can get from a pumpkin beer. If you are looking for a candy beer that tastes like sugar and a bunch of other shit thrown together then please by all means drink Pumking.

I like both of those, but they are very different beers.

As for the polarizing nature of ST Imperial series beers, I absolutely hate Creme Brulee and Chokolat but love Pumking... probably due to the spices.

it's just like liquid pumpkin pie, very heavy and not that sessionable, check out CLBC Pumpkin as well...or anything Captain lawrence for that matter

That's a shame. I love the Choklat for the simple fact they can make it legitimately taste like chocolate, yet still hide that high ABV. When ST makes a beer, they keep it literal. The Pumking tastes like pumpkin pie, the choklat tastes like you're drinking a Hershey bar.

Unless you like extremely sweet beer, you made a good choice.

I agree about Unearthly; Southern Tier IPAs are mostly good.

I'm going to sound like a hypocrite, but the Chokolat is so artificial tasting it's hard to drink. The same could probably be said for PK, but I guess the flavors just work better for me.

I was a little disappointed by Elysian Great Pumpkin personally. A good beer for sure, but I was expecting better. I had all 4 the other night (Night Owl, Dark O the Moon, Blight, and Great Pumpkin).

Have you had Cigar City Good Gourd and/or Schafly Pumpkin Ale? These are the only 2 pumpkin beers (without a twist i. e. Rumpkin or Burly Gourd) that truly rival Pumking in my opinion.

Best pumpkin beer I've had yet, but I'm also not a big fan of the style. I liked it for its subtlety and complexity. Seemed to be about equal parts pumpkin and beer, with just enough spice to keep it interesting.

I've had Schlafly on tap a couple times and I really really liked it. They're different beers though.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. It just didn't stand out to me on an evening where we drank all 4 Elysian's, Lavery Stingy Jack, SA Harvest Pump, Bruery Burly Gourd, CCB Good Gourd, Schafly, Terrapin Pumpkinfest, Rumpkin, FlyDog The Fear, among others.

Ps. There were a lot of people....so they were about 6oz pours give or take.

They're definitely different, but neither of them are "dark" pumpkin beers like Dark O the Moon or Burly Gourd, and neither are Barrel Aged. They're both brewed with pumpkin and the brewer's choice of spices. I think that Schlafly has the better mouth-feel. It's has more of a full body.

I like Pumking for sure. I only live about 40 minutes from the brewery, so it's around for a long time.

Pumking could taste just like motherfuckin' pumpkin pie, but I'll never know because I'll never drink the ************.

Nah- just couldn't resist... In all honesty I totally concur; it may be a bit sweet, but really does remind me of pumpkin pie all the way to the graham cracker crust. I don't always drink pumpkin beers , but when I do it's Pumking or Weyerbacher.

If you like pumpkin pie tasting sweet spice bombs, then Pumking does it very well. (I mean that as a complement)

If you like balance, or something that tastes more like real pumpkin instead of the spices, then there are definitely better pumpkin beers out there.

To me Cambridge Brewing Company is the bar. Elysian does a great job with pumpkins, and The Great Pumpkin comes pretty close. I also think Weyerbacher is very good in the stronger category.

I wouldn't say it's even close to as polarizing as Creme Brulee. I think BA's responses to threads about Pumking are polarizing, but in reality people love this beer. It has the second most reviews (over 1400) on the top 50 pumpkin ales, and comes in at number 6.
