[IMG] Poured ice cold out of the fridge into my Funk Brewing Teku glass, canned 1/4/18. Pours a very hazy dark yellow with a 2 plus finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of gobs of thick lace behind as it slowly settles into a thin ring of bubbles that coats the sides of the glass. 4.5

Smell is tangerine, passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, and subtle grapefruit. 4

Taste follows very tropical tangerine, passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, and a very nice balanced grapefruit bitterness in the finish. 4

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, plenty of life, not dry but slightly sticky from all the fresh hops, and very drinkable at 6.1% ABV 4.25

Overall this is a very nice effort, very tasty and extremely drinkable, and actually pretty darn juicy after you pour the remainder of the sentiment in the final pour. 4

Happy NBS. Not much happening around these parts, just enjoying a mild February day. I'm enjoying Surly's 2016 BB Darkness. @lordofthewiens I hope you find your replacement soon to ease any anxiety.

It pours a pitch black with a thin 1 finger deep tan head that quickly fades away and leaves no lacing behind. The aroma has rich roasted malts, molasses, oak, vanilla, sweet caramel, and dark chocolate. Flavor starts with the barrel along with roasted malts, plenty of dark chocolate, some molasses with caramel. Vanilla and some oak move in to to finish it off. A very smooth and rich full mouthfeel that is slightly sweet. I had this resting in the cellar for a year to help the barrel notes slightly fade.

    Cheers!

Curious. If color isn't relevant why would the brewer feel it was a good idea to label it a Heller Doppelbock and deliberately alert beer drinkers to expect a brighter color?

Ok, one thing that memories are not are predictors of the future (despite what many may believe). Sure, they can aid in predictions, especially if memories are steeped in fact, but I digress.

The whole point of quoting my own post is that while I might have insinuated I that I might expect this next new beer to compare, a quick look at the label indicates I would be foolish to think such. It's base, however, is still a mystery that may go unsolved. The base beer is the aforementioned Big Bad Baptist, but this version has been aged in whickey and rum barrels, and has cacao nibs, BA coffee beans, and BA coconut (who knew?) added.

Now I am not a rum-barrel aged beer fan at all. But I don't mind trying them from time to time. This one has so much else going on, I think it may be safe. Let's see if Triple Barrel BBB works for me:

Ok - this is a lovely looking beer! The initial head grows from the crashing waves of my mildly aggressive pour to form a solid brown head. As this falls, the color fades to a lighter tan/beige color. The large-bubbled collar provides landscape lacing until I swirl the glass and destroy the world it has built.

The nose is wonderfully replete with coconut (note, I am a fan of coconut). It's forward, but doesn't dominate and/or seem artificial. The coffee, chocolate, and more familiar barrel notes all get a say, but they seem to need their combined weight to balance the coconut. I'd say the rum barrel comes through a little more, yielding a slight Malibu rum scent. Chocolate is probably the next most prevalent.

Another beer that has a thickness - probably a little more than the Block 15 from before, but also tiptoes away from being heavy. There's a little more bite here, as the spirit barrels seem to have given up more of their previous residents.

The barrel aging influence applies equally to the flavor. There is more of a very light berry note than barrel tang, but the whiskey and rum flavors are not hidden. They are also not overpowering, which is a plus for my palate. Light roasted malt gains a chocolatey aspect by mid-taste. The barrels start to come in with vanilla, rum, and coconut. The coffee aspect seems a bit lost in this mix, to me, at least as a distinct note.

Overall, the rum and coconut play well as equal players to a more chocolatey base beer. The former comes out on top, and I would expect that to quell my enjoyment, but it's so well done, I am just having fun sipping it.

Funny thing, although I enjoyed the Block 15 Breakfast with Woodford slightly more, I did appreciate the construction of this beer very much. The overall BA adjusted scores are close - but perhaps an ever so slight tad more close than I expected.

Greetings from the still snowy southern shore. The usual routine of a morning run and dog walk. Nothing new to see here except for the beer. Starting with one I purchased in more favorable weather! July of 2017 I believe? Let's check it out....

A bomber purchased the day after a shit show brewery release. The allocation was cut, but who cares as my time is more valuable than waiting in another 5 hour line. No date, but it is the 2017 summer release poured in my Transient grenade style glass for the occasion.

It pours a thick oily black producing a few centimeters of decadent mocha colored foam. No lacing present, just an oily residue. Smell is coffee, bakers chocolate, marshmallow, bourbon and a slight whiff of maple. Sweet maple syrup is first up in taste, followed by bourbon, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and oak. The feel is oily thick and creamy with a bite of alcohol in the finish.

For those not familiar with this beer, I'd compare it to a sweeter more bourbon forward version of CBS. I'm guessing from the maple syrup used as opposed to barrels that housed Blis syrup? The bourbon is more prominent as a result too, as they weren't used for syrup and only held the spirit. Both excellent beers that use different methods and taste differently as a result. You have to be in more of a mood for dessert drinking the pastry-like Kentuckley. Another quality beer from Transient, my score is 4.56 / rDev+1.8%.

Enjoy your day and new beer adventures. As usual, the official scorecard.....

Many thanks to @lordofthewiens for getting is off and running! I'll be back in a bit with a couple of contributions. That said, I'd encourage today's participants to consider also participating in the Drink It Now Day proposed by the fine folks at Allagash and Odell.

For the same reason that a brewer would label their beer a Dunkles Doppelbock or a Doppelbock Dunkel... it provides more info.

Yes, more information, and it also sets apart one beer from another. I guess my point is that if color isn't a general expectation for the style there's no need for either Heller or Dunkles in the Name of the beer.

Big Night from Suarez Family Brewing is a country (farmhouse) pale ale. The first pour from the bottle is clear and golden with a fluffy 3 cm foam cap. The following pours are deeply hazy, but pretty. Thin foam rings lace the glass upon draughts. The aroma is of citrus and strawberries with a Brett tinge. The flavor is lemon and grass, saison yeast, with Brett and a slight lacto note. The oak is prominent and enhances the brew greatly. This is delicate and delicious.

Summary: Aromas of white wine, green apple, and pear meet a level white wine vinous sweet to sour character that firmly meets some grassy to hay-like hoppy notes. Flavors meld the prior mentioned aromas sweet and sour and added in a nice spicy crisp earthiness. Slight aftertaste of the lemon, green apple, pear, grassiness and earthiness. Almost medium bodied, this beer did end up being a nice session. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt as projected. It's a saison well worthy of coming back to.

Happy New Beer Sunday everyone! Today I am drinking a Pilsner called "Premium Pilz" from Heidenpeters. I guess they are making a play on the word "Pils" since a similar word "Pilz" means mushroom in German, hence the mushroom on the can:

The apperance is a slightly hazy, golden yellow with a frothy, white head,

The aroma was noticeable as soon as I opened the can. Lots of citrus and herbal hops with some malt sweetness and a bit of slightly funky yeast.

The taste is quite similar to the aroma. Quite citrusy and juicy at first with some slightly herbal, bitter hops that is followed by a creamy yeast flavor that balances everything out.

The mouthfeel is thicker than most other Pilsner beers that I have had but I would imagine that is due to the fact that the beer still has yeast, while most other Pilsners are filtered.

Overall it is an extremely drinkable and tasty beer. It's a well balanced, refreshing beer that puts a modern twist to a well known and classic style. I find most Pilsners to have a some what unpleasant after taste but I think that the yeast in this beer helps to balance it out. All of the citrus / hoppy flavors from a pilsner are there and then they are complemented with a slightly sweet malt and creamy finish. A well made beer. I hope to try more from this brewery in the future. Hopefully everyone else is able to enjoy a new beer on this fine Sunday!

Quite a few new beers in the house today, 30 or so, as I've received several boxes from winning a quarter on a Super Bowl board. I won't get around to all of them today but hope to put a dent in the stack!
    Council Brewing In The Blind

Poured a hazy golden yellow with a thin white cap that disappeared in less than a minute.
Smells of citrus, some pineapple there too.
Taste follows, more pineapple than was implied from the aroma, the citrus was mostly tangerine, a bit of a bite but not overly bitter.
Medium bodied with a dry finish.
Overall a tasty brew from a brewery I'd hoppily try again.

Germans seriously like compound names. My feeling is that beer drinkers aren't doing themselves any favors by looking at every beer according to appearance, smell, taste, etc... and holding that against a standard that might be inappropriate - and in this case, if the style term is not even a description of these attributes. By treating all style names as a grouping according to these characteristics, we not only end up approaching all beers through a very rigid framework, but also through a frame that was meant to hold a different picture. Aventinus is considered the standard Weizenbock, but the brewer doesn't call it a Weizenbock (at least here in the States), they call it a Doppelbock... and sometimes more specifically a "wheat Doppelbock." Wheat is a signal that increases our understanding of what it is, and Doppelbock is another. It's silly to say that it isn't a Doppelbock or to judge it according to the appearance/smell/taste of Celebrator (and why Celebrator other than that it's good?). Pale, dark, or wheat... they're still Doppelbocks and not poorer because they're one out of those three.

Morning NBSers! just a quick reminder that there is one week left to sign up for the latest NBS themed BIF. Sign-ups will close when NBS is locked next week, and I'll start on pairings the following day.

I hear y'all asking yourselves; "selves, what would be required of me if I were to join these heathens?" Well, let me tell you; You will be assigned a "target", You will need to send your target a minimum of 66-72oz (3x22oz/6x12oz or whatever combination) of beer that is new to your target. The goal is to get NBS eligible brews into the hands of those who otherwise likely wouldn't get to try it. You may, of course, send more beer, and most folks do. The other requirements are a piece of swag (T-shirts and glasses being the most common), a local food item that represents your town/area/region, and, one of the beers you send must be a 'Mystery" beer. Basically, wrap up your beer so that no identifying marks show. Then, your target has to pour, review, and post that beer, without knowing anything about it. We added this aspect last round, and it was great fun.

What will you get? At least 66oz of beer, although it'll likely be more, you're only guaranteed the 66-72oz minimum, the swag, and something tasty to eat.

How do you participate? I'll start a Hints and Hauls (H&H) thread. Once you have your target, you start leaving hints for them to start trying to determine who their Sender (you) is. meanwhile, you'll be reading hints, trying to figure out who your sender is. The hints tend to start vague, and then slowly close in. Then, on the "Official" share date (likely April 8, the week after Easter), you post a couple reviews (including your Mystery beer) on NBS. It's likely you'll have beer for several weeks of NBS (I've still got a couple from the last round, back in October).

There ya have it. Read through this thread, ( https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/nbs-bif-7-sign-up-thread.558892/ ) and you'll see that beer is already zinging around the country in the form of LIFs. Go ahead, join in!
