I say leave the ambiguity alone. If you are too lazy to type out Lou Pepe Framboise in your trade post you deserve the bottle of Liquid Penis Fungus that I whip up in the toilet at my local gym.

I agree, but I think he was referring to FOMO

There were people in this thread mentioning bottle shares with 1oz-2oz pours. I think that's a pretty common experience.

In the end, I think we just disagree about the nature of intensely flavored beer. Taking a couple swigs and getting a lot of flavor doesn't make them easy to assess, nor does it make for an accurate assessment. @rozzom is right -- stouts/BA stuff is notorious for this -- real pleasant first sip or two, but 6-8oz later and I'm questioning whether I can take another. 2 very different assessments, all based on the volume drank.

Bottle shares and flights and all that can be great fun, but (in general) they're really quite terrible for assessing a beer.

I love flights. Getting a feel for what pint(s) I want to drink. Most flights I get are around 4 ounces. Detailed sensory analysis? Not so much. Some times it is with my better half to try out some new stuff.

An overly malty IPA... Too much Munich/Caramel malt in a hoppy beer just kills it for me. And it also drives me crazy reading a beer review for a BBA stout that someone is disgusted by, all infections aside they probably don't order a neat whiskey at a bar to begin with and would have no way of enjoying a barrel aged beer at all

Like I said, great fun. I do 'em too. I admit, though, that these days I tend to order a lot more pints or half pours (8-10oz), as I find I just can't really get a great feel for (most) beer unless I have that much of it.

That's funny, but I'm going to call bs on this one. Sugar crystals would serve as nucleation points for the CO2 and you'd make your beer flat and foamy.

    How so?

I will say, while I do like a hoppy saison, including dry hopped ones, I don’t like it when they’re hopped like a NEIPA. That’s a hybrid style I can do without.

There sure are a lot of fussy folks lingering about. To some, tasting beer is a pleasure, with lasting mental notes. To others tasting beer is tantamount to pure science; I think snobbily overly analytical, and rather like the real wine geeks I learned to avoid after nearly 40 years in the wine (and beer) business. But to each his own. I'll forever maintain there is no "correct" way to assess beer (or wine). Some people have great long experience, excellent palates, and fine memories- and just don't stress over spread sheets or exactly how many have been logged through time. After all it's called "fun", isn't it?

I don't trust any beer geek who thinks macros all taste the same claiming to pick up 40 unique flavor nuances in every barrel aged imperial stout.
