Very different. IIRC (from last year), Dark O' The Moon is more of a stout or porter. Lots of roasted malt and chocolate character.

Mixed with pumpkin, that sounds tasty.

You can ‘make’ your own pumpkin porter/stout: mix a pumpkin ale that is heavily spiced with your favorite porter/stout.

Just yesterday I mixed a Saranac Pumpkin Ale (which is heavily spiced) with Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. My wife calls this beer a Chocolate Pumpkin. It is very tasty!

    Cheers!

I agree with the notion that ST Pumking isn't exactly like a "liquid pumpkin pie". More than anything, I think it smells and tastes like buttered popcorn, which is why I love the beer..

Doesn't make me cry in the least, especially when I can back up my opinion with a solid 90 rating (exceptional) rated by over 1400 people, while your opinion is backed up by nothing but your horseshit.

Pumking really gets people going! Can we talk about religion or politics instead?

Everyone has different tastes, that's why there's lots of beer/breweries to choose from.

Just spreadin' the love for craft beer! (ALL of it)

I pick up a ton of them during the season, and I grab a case that I drink throughout the rest of the year. My hands down favorite beer EVER. yum yum.

Someone could make a similar point about AleSmith Speedway Stout, which BA gives a 4.38/97 (World Class) rAvg but you gave a pretty lousy 3.63. Or Rogue Hazelnut, which BA gave a 4.01/91 (Exceptional) but I gave a 3.4.

Point being, I don't think there's a BA out there who always agrees with the average rating. Taste is subjective.

Fully agree, but one shouldn't be trolling a Pumking thread with such a moronic post as "the beer sucks". You can say you don't care for it, but the sucks comment was meant to try to rile people up, pure and simple. I don't like Speedway Stout, but you won't find me saying it sucks either.

PS., I'd hardly call a 3.63 rating "lousy".

Yeah to me 3.6 rating is actually good, but according to BA standards I understand how people may consider it bad. I'll give a 3.6 rating and say the beer is pretty good. Some people will give a 3.6 rating and say the beer isn't good at all. I wish everyone could get on the same page, but that's a whole different discussion/debate.

That's probably just me. If I give a beer a score under about 3.75 that means I didn't enjoy it all that much and will probably never drink it again. According to the old BA scoring system (I believe) 3.0 = average and 4.0 = good. Why would I drink something that I think is less than good?

Then again, I'd guess I rate about 85% or more of beers at 4.0 or higher. Because they are good.

+ 1 to that, many seem to think its too sweet, and it leans on the sweet side. But it really embodies the perfect balance of graham cracker, pumpkin pie, spice, and creamy/perfect mouth feel...Its my fav by leaps and bounds

Yeah everyone has different ways of rating. For me, anything 4.4 and higher is world class. 4.0-4.4 is phenomenal. 3.5-4.0 pretty good. 3.0-3.5 is above average. 3 is average. Anything below 3 is below average. That's how I look at it, but I totally understand everyone is different.

I like this beer, but my wife loves this beer. So to me, this is the best beer out there. I can drink whatever beer I want from my cellar as long as she has her Pumking. For those who think it is too sweet, you should really try Horsehead Brewing's Pumpkin beer. I personally thought it was a fantastic beer from a small brewery.

Yeah, I don't see how a 4 out of 5 is "good". I don't remember the old system all that well. For me it's very simple. Scale of 1 to 5. 5 being perfect, 1 being lousy. A 4 is very good to excellent, 3 is good, 2 is below average. So a 3.63 is between good and excellent. I realize that Speedway is a very good beer for many/most people, it was just not very good for me. I would never say it "sucks" though, never.

I loved Horsehead's pumpkin beer. I traded for it last year and loved it.

I think the ratings drop-down menus used to say 3.0 - average, 4.0 - good, 5.0 - excellent or something like that. Now they're just numbers, pretty open to interpretation. I got that original system stuck in my brain and now I can either start rating to a different scale (totally screwing up everything I've done previously) or just leave it alone. But you're right, objectively speaking a 4 out of 5 is only 80%, which doesn't sound all that great.

I wouldn't say Pumking sucks either but it certainly didn't taste very much like pumpkin pie to me. Way too much cinnamon.

That's a great pumpkin beer too. I was glad I picked it up for a pumpkin beer tasting.
