Apparently you didn't care much for it either. If you really liked it, it'd be around 3.75 at the very least. Seems like you liked it less than the mass but only slightly more than someone who rated it nearly on par as being average.

Depends on the number of scores involved. There is a big difference between what you get with a single individual and what you get with a hundred or so combined. In particular the "odd men out" disappear into the background noise and the average score can be quite useful.

That assumes a normal distribution centered around 3, which is not a safe assumption here. Especially given certain known biases such as brewers not releasing a beer they expect to score a 1 and some reviewers not making a habit of picking their beers at random from the range of all possible beers (including those beers they can't get because the brewer doesn't release them).

No, I tend to score using 3 for average. A 3.25 from me is a good score. 3.5s are very good. 4s are a rare score for me to give. I'd bet that if the other rater had written a review, despite the closeness of our scores, it would have come across that he didn't like the beer very much. Whereas, I might grab another bottle.

According to the rating scale and it shows it if you pay, attention when you rate:

3 is okay, 3.5 is good, 3.75 is very good, 4 is exceptional, 4.3 is outstanding, and 5 is world class

Now we're just getting to verbiage and semantics. Does Okay = Average? In my eyes, yes. Shrug.

Sure but you also said 3.5 is very good, I disagree. 3.5 is good and 3.75= very good. But yes average = okay

Well it depends. If you rate to style, Budweiser is damn near a 5.

Hmm, you both make good points. Not sure how I'd rate "flavorless" myself.

A 3 would indicate an average flavor to me, so I'd be inclined to give a flavorless, or neutral, beer a 3. For example, some people say Budweiser is like water, and give it a "meh" rating of 3.

But then again, if it was devoid of flavor, I could see someone giving it a 1 too. Budweiser has no flavor, and sucks, so I'm giving it a 1.

Tough question. Mostly because I rarely come across a beer that actually has NO flavor.

I'd still disagree. Sure you're entitled to think of Budweiser as a 5 based on style as taste is subjective but even when rating by style I give it a 3 as I always rate by style. Now if you said MGD, PBR, Gennessee Cream Ale, or Schlossbrauerei deserve a 5 in that style I would moreso agree with you.
