Not to jump on these guys, but if they didn't know about Certificate of Occupancy, they maybe shoulda hired a pro to oversee things for them. All the inspections are just par for the course.

We hired top notch professionals from the very beginning. We used ZGF who won Architects of the Year last year in their main industry publication and Centrex as general contractors, who have built many large scale commercial operations before. I was mainly trying to share some information with people about what stage we are at and some things that we’ve learned on the way. We definitely have pros on our team, things just move slow for a myriad of reasons.

Anyone had issues with Guava Mochi crowlers going bad? Both I got were bad. They looked like west coast IPAs when poured and tasted awful. Went straight to the drain.

This beer was actually pretty clear both on tap and in the crowler for me. It was a different beer... I liked it quite a bit after a few sips, but my wife hated it.

I've actually seen several reports echoing what you've seen.

It's not specific to crowlers, but I had a glass Saturday on draft and was told by folks I was drinking with that the appearance had changed (clarified?) from when it first released.

That being said, it was delicious on draft. Sorry that wasn't the case with your crowlers.

I had multiple crowlers of it but the last two were definitely bad. flat and undrinkable.

Did you contact GN about this? They seem pretty proactive, and would likely want to know if there were some significant QC issues (either with a particular beer or their growler fill set up).

Yeah, I had to chuckle a bit when I read that as well.

As someone who lived in Baltimore for years (up until 2012/2013) and traveled down to Va. pretty often, that's an observation I never heard before, and is a sentiment I never experienced personally.

There were a lot of nice things about Virginia (very pretty state), that's for sure, but the beer scene (and wine scene) wasn't one of them.

The VA beer scene has changed since 2013.

I'm aware of that (or should I say, I've heard that it has), but still stand by my comment.

I have family in Front Royal (or more accurately, my wife does), so I get back there fairly often (at least once or twice year). My take is that increasingly, there are some areas where the beer scene has progressed and improved significantly, but that at least in comparison to the NW (and California as well, if that matters to you), for most of the state the beer scene is still not very good.

There has never been a time when I've been some place in Virginia, and said to myself "boy, folks here sure must feel spoiled by the great beer scene here."

What a coincidence, I have family in Front Royal too. The Polks have a long history in that area.

Yep, and was quite favorably impressed by my visit to PaveMint last time we were out there. Some of the places out in Winchester I wasn't impressed with, but overall, the beer scene in Va. has improved significantly since I first visited back in the day (Star Hill stuff used to be the only local beer I would see when visiting Richmond, Charlottesville, Norfolk and the like).

That being said, it's easy to say it's improved because it used to be horrible. When we would visit FR 7 or 8 years ago, there was nothing for miles around there (stores or taphouses). I would have to drive to the Whole Foods in Fairfax for a decent beer, and 7 or 8 years ago "decent" was a relative term.

So yeah, things are definitely considerably better than they used to be. However, I think it's a bit of a stretch for anyone to say they feel "spoiled" by the Virginia beer scene, just because they're able to find beers from Aslin, Veil and Hardywood without too much difficulty.

Unfortunately, probably not. I still think that Great Notion is just a really, really good brewery, and not the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think that probably falls under the category of "irreconcilable differences."

I was just in Portland, and the *only* breweries who were doing great hazy IPA's were Great Notion and Modern Times. Great Notion's crowlers were selling out in five minutes, and Modern Times didn't seem to be canning any of their best hazy stuff. Maybe there were other breweries doing hazy IPA's on that level that I missed?

Compare that to VA, where I can drive to either Aslin or Veil and buy unlimited cans of great hazy ipa's any day of the year, and yeah, I'm going to argue that i have it pretty damn good.

And for a person who moved from Baltimore five years ago and has never seemingly lived in VA to comment with any authority on the VA beer scene, it's laughable.
