It will likely be pretty busy and difficult to find a seat, especially since it looks like it's going to be pretty chilly so the patio likely won't get used much. Generally if you come more like 3 PM instead of right at open, you have a better chance of finding a seat.

    Yes.

So @rscot231 what can you tell us about Batch 4? Or do you want to hear feedback before you reveal what the change is? If I had to guess, I would guess you are doing to use an amount of lactose that is between B1 and B3?

Also can you say if Holidayfan 2016 and Holidayfan 2017 were completely identical? I feel that (based on my limited sensory memory) they were somewhat different.

I have a unverified unsubstantiated suspicion that one of the reason that Odd13 beers are so "clean" and also keep so well (in the fridge) compared to similar IPAs is the use of clarity ferm in, as far as I know, all of the beers.

Planning to get there around 3-4p, so that's perfect. If cans are gone by then so be it.

    Thanks for the helpful answer!

I'm not sure whether we'll ever reveal. We're pretty open about things, and the general parameters of the beer are still the same. We are going to be a little bit less forthcoming on this one.

Identical recipes. We did change yeast vendors this year (as a result of the recall), but the specific strain we are using is allegedly the same strain we got from the previous vendor. In my sensory experience, they are very very similar in terms of ester profile, attenuation etc.

I'd chalk up the perceived differences to process changes we've made. We definitely have lower dissolved oxygen (DO) this year than we did last year, and our procedures for dry hopping have changed a touch.

Your theory could be correct, but I have my doubts. Clarity ferm is definitely in all the beers. Back when we first started using it, we did some side by sides without it. Flavor was identical, but we didn't do any long term tests in terms of aging.

My alternative suggestion is that we are canning on our own equipment time after time, using our Anton Paar to measure CO2 and DO time after time, and we've probably canned more batches of this style than most of the other local producers combined. A lot of the others producing these styles locally are using mobile canning operations. Lowering DO levels is difficult and can sometimes be counter intuitive (e.g. there are cases where we actually can the beer warmer, which theoretically causes more CO2 to leave solution). It's a lot of trial and error that you might not have if you are using someone else's equipment.

None of that is to say the other local producers are doing a bad job or to say that we are perfect. Our shelf stability used to be shit. It's still not perfect - we still get random oxidized cans from time to time. Dialing in a shelf stable product is very difficult, and there's a reason packaging equipment is often the most expensive thing you'll find in a brewery. If you're using other folks' equipment, and using it infrequently, there's going to be a learning curve. Some of these little things are the difference between a can that tastes/smells/looks good for a few weeks vs a few months.

Just wanted to say that 4.0 is tasting mighty fine to me. I haven't had the first three test batches so maybe that's not helpful but I had 4.0 yesterday at the Aliens can release and it was fantastic. It was also my first time trying I-P-Alien and I was blown away by that too. While everyone fights over and tries to trade for the "more hyped" beers in this state I will gladly keep purchasing Odd 13 both for the quality and accessibility. The hoppy offerings rival any I've had in CO. Oh, and Loki, the flanders red ale, is delicious too.

This, a million times. O13 and Odell have had my packaged hoppy offerings on lock the past two years.

IDK, ever since Comrade released their 32oz cans I have been drinking them a lot more. And let's no forget Crooked Stave. I've passed up new ipas from across the nation for another sixer of their ipa.

Had IJH 4.0 as well (last night) - outstanding. Hits the sweet spot for 8% smoothness. I might have wished just for a tad less over-ripe fruit, and a bit more "bite" of the old IPA kind, but I'm in my late 40s so I date my style preference...

My only issue is that the Comrade is over-priced and not in the right packaging. I love Comrade Superpower, but considering Juicy Banger is now packaged as well. S26, Odd13 & Odell are my go-to.

I can see that. Price per ounce never really enters my mind, I simply buy what I like because I like it. Comrade happens to be on my way home, and I love what they're doing, so it's a no brainer for me. YmmV

Yeah it's funny because I mentioned Odd13, Outer Range, and Weldwerks in the "best 10 NEIPA breweries" and I got laughed at by a few people. And that's fine. I've send Odd13 IPAs to at least 10 different states now and I've had -0- complaints. And more than a few "wow this is actually really good" reactions. It's a good product at a good price that's easy to find.

And lets be real for a second. Other Half, Treehouse, etc cans are $5 each and require hours of wait in lines to get. If I can get similar enjoyment from a good local option, it's a no-brainier. Colorado is not a "wait in line for IPAs" state and I'm fine with that.

Unfortunately, the "scene" right now demands new and next all the time. So breweries have to find a way to keep loyal customers happy and still excite the "chasers" or "tickers" or traders. Smart breweries are trying to balance everything to try and remain profitable and to keep selling beer.
(sorry this is a bit of a tangent)

If it weren't for this mentality though. I don't think the beer scene around here would be moving as swiftly as it is in ALL directions.

Competition sparks innovation and keeps the industry moving.

Odd 13 was doing Superfan test batches a while back and it seemed like a whole new thing to just have a GOOD NE IPA around in cans.

Now we're fighting over which one is the best!

That is an excellent point. There is a theory (rule?) in business management that if your not expanding, your failing. If you aren't innovating, your competition will.

One of the problems with the Colorado Springs beer scene is a lot of breweries are focusing of making "good enough" beer rather than outstanding beer that really sets them apart, that really finds a niche market. I often think "this would be a great beer 10 years ago". Tastes evolve over time. There are 4 breweries that package here. Only 2 of which I'd purchase.

@rscot231 I just picked up a 6 pack of IJH at my local spot that was canned 2/23. Can’t seem to figure out what version it is. Whatever version it is though, please don’t stray too far from that recipe. IMO one of the best NE style IPA’s in the state easily. Very true to the style. Hope this is the final version of this beer.

Fuckin A! This is absolutely killer! I will be consuming this on a regular basis as well as sending some to friends in Chicago. This is going to be year round now correct? Thanks for the response.

Thanks and I'm glad you like it.

It is year round in the sense that it will be brewed regularly. It will not have quite the same availability as Codename or n00b, as we are limited on our Galaxy contract. We plan to drop about 400-500 cases every month. At the price point of the beer, I actually think that's an appropriate amount for now anyway. It should move and not linger too long.
