Some of ya’ll have entirely too much time on your hands. Man, I thought I wasted a lot of time on craft beer-related stuff

God damn, Ohio is the whiniest beer community. If they're not finding the pettiest ways to bitch about every local brewery they possibly can, they're bitching about people that write more than two sentences...on a forum, lmfao!

While watching the Cavs snap the 76ers 11 game losing streak and enjoying a surprisingly delicious Barleywine, it's really not that hard to type up a five minute rebuttal to a guy complaining about these damn kids these days and their damn NE IPAs, in a thread specifically created to discuss NE IPAs in Ohio...

For someone that absolutely despises everything about hazy or NE style IPAs, subscribing to a thread dedicated to that very thing just to bitch about it is absurd @CannedWaggoneer

I really just quickly browsed through that, but trying to say beer is less diverse now and IPA's are taking over, making it constantly harder for the consumer to get a variety, yada yada... dumbest argument I continue to see you use. I can literally get every style ever brewed + more x-style experimental stuff than I could ever get through, at any beer store around. I can go to a place locally that brews funky wild ales, sours, belgians, stouts, barrel aged, non-barrel aged, ipas, pilsner, mead, etc.... all in a single brewery in Cleveland. I have more access now to easily learn about and obtain any style of beer than ever before. Period.

So anyway, for those headed to Masthead, did they allow you to leave and come back last week, too?

Yep, you could get your allotment tickets, leave, then come back and depending on if there was still a backlog of people waiting for their cans, you'd either get a can ticket or go straight up to the kiosk for you cans.

Just to answer my own question above. Haze Jude is ok. I would call it a double IPA. Its along the lines of double fleeb juice and no it's not better then masthead New England styles

+1 on the Fat Heads staying out of the haze game. They brew not only world class ipas but other beers as well. I don't think I've ever had a beer from them below average. There is no need to settle for the masses just to join them. Keep to your identity

I'm in the Dayton area and will be sure to check them out and spread the word. Love supporting guys in this area. Wish you all nothing but the best

Couldn't agree more. All their NE beers starting with tubes had too many hops! Very good beers, don't get me wrong, but the sheer amount of hope overpowered the finish on these beers. The mouthfeel and grain bill is on point in my opinion. I thought Citra Vice was the best of the bunch; being that its such a well rounded hop it can provide a complete profile some of the others cannot. Nelson vice probably could have used 15% more grain to balance out that strong hop bill

Personally, in OH, I rank Hoof and JAFB as the best NE IPA brewers. JAFB is so on point with theirs. Still a well kept secret.

What is a real shame is that this NEIPA and fruit puree IPA trend came about just as Ohio was really starting to get recognition for producing many of the very best IPAs from CBC, Fat Heads, Brew Kettle.

Now that regular IPA is no longer desirable or marketable we've lost all that recognition. Now its just discussions about who makes the best 3rd tier NEIPA. Hoof is everyone's favorite but no one says they come close to stacking up to the nation's best, so from there its just groveling over who makes a NEIPA that's even so much as drinkable.

Way to take Ohio beer back down a few notches.

I generally disagree with a lot of your posts, but I fully understand and agree with what you're saying here. HH is probably in the B-tier NEIPA brewing group (along the likes of Aslin, Veil, and Tired Hands non-milkshakes). IMO, A-tier include OH, Treehouse, Trillium.

The market is moving and even Jackie O's has reformulated their Grave DIPA to address the hazy market (see yesterday's IG post). As much as some complain about the new style, I think it is forcing brewers to rethink their position in the market. I will seek both NEIPA and traditional IPA styles because I enjoy good beer, regardless of the style.

I'm impressed that the Hoof hype is still on. My guess is that the trade value is keeping it alive. Trade them for stuff from the A-tier breweries ("Our beers trade for TreeHouse") and win. You send them a tick, you get really good beer. Inconsistency still reigns ("This batch is amazing" "Not as good as Konkey 2015") and with all the new a good NEIPAs popping out around Ohio and nearby cities I still don't get why people go all crazy for them. Guess the whole 80s and let's act all crazy rad and pretend to be super cool gimmick pays off.

The inconsistency is actually a draw in this case. HH fans are gamblers. There's a possibility that the next release will be a "good" batch. I'm sure it's thrilling in a way.

Hoof releases are like those loot boxes in every videogame; everyone knows the chances of getting that beer you really wanted are very low, but once in every couple thousand dollars there's a pay out. Their fans just haven't yet realized that with gambling the house always wins.

While they are popping up in Ohio they are still really the only game in Columbus. I have been meaning to make it to one of the yellow springs can releases though.

A-tier breweries are easier to get than ever; Trillium and Treehouse have significantly upped production. That's why B-tier trades for A-tier so well.

Everything Masthead released today was tasty, but Tubes was a clear #1 and remains my favorite offering from them thus far.

Where did you read that normal IPAs are no longer desirable? Hoof isn’t my favorite, who told you I liked hoof? What should I spend my money on, Id like to support Ohio over what I like personally, just looking for help so we get recognized. Thanks.

Loot boxes in video games? You lost credibility on your “grizzled old guy” stance with that comparison. Cracker Jack box toy was an easy choice and you blew it.
