Yep. You that rich you can drain pour beer? I've had bad beer but always finish it because I spent money on it. Unless it can be returned for full refund, I don't see why you would drain pour it? I've had my share of bad, tough to drink beers. I've even had an infected beer before. Still found a way to finish it and enjoyed my good beer right after. I believe part of not drain pouring helps develop a strong palate. Drink the good and the bad. But after having that beer don't buy again. Unsure if you will like a beer buy a single. But holding my stance on this one and afterall this is the controversial thread so yeah if you drain pour a beer it makes you a douche.

I think there’s two types of drain pouring:

    1. The douche DP - when you see some tosser dumping a perfectly good beer just because they can - seems more and more prevalent on instagram/fbook these days.

    2. The normal DP - not really a question of wealth or palate refinement. Sometimes a beer, for whatever reason, is too much. Shouldn’t be a habit and doesn’t deserve any sort of back patting/congratulating, but I think it’s understandable on occasion and doesn’t equate to being a douche. I’ve probably done it maybe 5-6 times in my life. When there’s zero enjoyment / redeeming factor then why forge ahead. This is coming from someone who was raised to finish everything on their plate and still does pretty much unfailingly.

With so many reviews to research these days there is no need to drain pour. Do your research and just buy good beer as in if not a 3.75 rating or higher then don't buy. Then you never would need to drain pour.

That’s not a guarantee of anything. My most recent DP was Vanilla Noir. 4.16 on here. And I’m a fan of plenty of Prairie’s other stouts. But this was just a one note sickly sweet mess for me. Flip side - lots of UK beers (where I’m from) are rated in the middle 3’s on here purely because they’re not double dry hopped / barrel aged / over 5% / hazy etc. So people would be missing out if they followed your logic

Who says controversy is all bad? From this post alone, I've learned:
    1. Esters.
    2. Phenols.
    3. Snarkisms (or Snarkicism) is everywhere.
    4. Glassware.
    5. I'm an infrequent douche? (is douche a full-time thing once you crossover, or does the douche factor mellow with each finished beer?).
    6. Opinions are either approved, or not.
    7. I keep coming back to this post.
    8. Thanks @Kraz ..great post!
    9. I take none of this seriously..

I have no problem drain pouring a beer that I don't like. My take is I can only drink _____ number of beers, why waste one on something bad.
That said, there would have to be something quite unpleasant about the beer to make me pour it out.

The I spent money on it so i am going to finish mentality doesn't work for me.

Seems like some people woke up crabby this morning

Drink/drain pour what you like- you bought it, I could care less what you do with it - has no effect on my life other than an occasional head shake

    Enjoy your day!

I'll pour something out if it's seriously flawed, cuz shit just happens sometimes. But in a situation like that my first inclination would be to see if blending helps.

Just over the past holiday break I picked up a crowler of a stout that I thought that my brother and sister would really enjoy- the little taster I was given was just like drinking chocolate syrup. Which could be a good thing or a bad thing , but sharing it with a group would've been fine. Well, for one reason or another we didn't get to it and I brought the crowler home with me, which I opened the next night. As you could imagine, after the first glass I just couldn't take anymore and it was getting more overbearing by the ml. The next night I started blending it with some Spaten Optimator, and lo and behold- a tasty drinkable beer that still had a lot of chocolate flavor.

I've been away and I just saw this....is this the record for most likes? I totally agree and "like" as well...

This is one of the main reasons I don’t review beers - I’m terrible at articulating what I’m tasting haha. It wasn’t sweet in the chocolate syrup sense - although I don’t seek beers like those out, I actually have a pretty high tolerance for that sort of sweetness so doubt one would result in a DP. This was more that sort of sweetness you get with (at least for my palate) poorly done whiskey barrel aged stouts, where it seems a very sweet base beer is combined with either an unsuitable or badly integrated whiskey barrel treatment. It’s more of that sort of fruity sweetness; even slightly tart if that makes sense.

And your solution I’m afraid ties in with another of my “controversial” beer opinions: I cannot bring myself to mix beers, ever. I would never be that cruel to an Optimator! A Michelada done with a Mexican macro is the beginning and end of my foray into beer mixing / beer cocktails. Oh and the one time I missed out on BCBCS so added an ounce of strong espresso into a regular BCBS.

Dang, you'd have to be some kinda freak to drain pour one of those beauts. The two in the middle look like they have crab eyes, the one on the right has breasts, and the one on the left....well never mind!

I find the no-drainpour thing baffling. There's no negative consequences to yourself or to the world by not finishing a beer. You're free to do it, the hand of god will not strike you down. So why are you forcing yourself to drink beer you don't like? What's the upside?

And if someone missed out on 2015 BCBS they could just add cherry juice to a 2017 BCBS...

Well, there's a fun aspect for me in a problem-solving kind of way. And I've enjoyed enough Optimator or stuff like that on its own terms that one or two here and there doesn’t seem like that big a much of a sacrifice.

@oldbean perhaps to catch a buzz is why someone would down an unappealing beer. I see no harm in a drain pour, some particular style just doesn't work or isn't appealing. If it's infected why would I drink something that doesn't taste any where near what it's supposed to..I wouldn't eat rotten bad meat nor infected beer

I guess we just have a different definition of "douche" then. Because I find the guy doing an hour of research on BA in the beer store hemming and hawing over whether to pull the trigger on a 3.85 rated beer to be much more of a douche then someone not choosing to finish a beer.

I'm not rich by any means, but I pay my bills and support my family and money that I have left over I will use to treat myself. Beer is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, and if I crack one I don't enjoy then it goes down the drain and I'll grab something else out of the fridge.

I used to have your mentality in college when I would just drink to get drunk. Since then I moved on to better more expensive beers because I drink for taste not effects, so why would I drink something that doesn't taste good?

I wouldn't equate someone who forces themselves to choke down a nasty beer as a manly man, but more so an alcoholic. If money is that tight that you would force yourself to drink an infected beer then beer may not be the hobby for you.
