With Saint Patrick's day fast approaching, I was looking for some Irish Dry Stouts.

Distribution preferred over on-tap only, and MN-WI-IA brewed preferred as well so long as they distribute into MN. I suppose a trip to Casanova is not out of the question, but I'd prefer something locally available.

Finnegans Dead Irish Poet is called an Irish Dry Stout, but at 7% ABV, is too strong for the style, IMO.

Guinness Draught is 4.2% and Murphy's Irish Stout is 4.0%. I don't really expect an American craft brewer to hit those low marks, but I would expect an Irish Dry Stout to be below (if not well below) 6%.

    Are any out there?

Tin Whiskers has an Irish Cream Stout at 5.8 %ABV. Might be worth a try for you?

See the other site's list, and you can toggle to Iowa and Wisconsin as needed. I suggest you bookmark that page for future reference when you're looking for local examples of various styles. I believe the higher ABV examples in this list should be reclassified as Foreign Stouts.

Big Wood Morning Wood may be the only Minnesota-brewed example of the style currently distributed in the Twin Cities. I don't think Utepils Totally Wirth It has hit distribution yet, but it seems destined to do so. Lakefront, Furthermore, and Sprecher out of Wisconsin make examples of the style with a lot of ratings, although I'm not sure if the latter two breweries still distribute in Minnesota.

LTD brewing has an Irish dry stout on tap. They don’t distribute though.

Lift Bridge Irish Coffee Stout is a Milk Stout (i.e., a kind of Sweet Stout that contains lactose). It's partially whiskey-barrel-aged, uses coffee, and has a high ABV of 8.5%. That's about as far from a Dry Stout (think Guinness Draught or Guinness Extra Stout) as you can get within the world of stouts. The name is simply referring either to the "Irish Coffee" cocktail (Irish whiskey, coffee, cream, and sugar) or the politically incorrect old joke of calling any booze-spiked coffee "Irish coffee."

They do distribute to stores within a very close proximity to them. They do 750's of their bigger beers and sours, and 6 pack variety packs that change constantly.

I've seen Able's dry stout in stores recently. I don't recall much about it, except that at 3.7% it's very quaffable, like the stouts in Ireland.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Able is available in one of the stores I frequent, so that may be the default. I haven't been able to find Lakefront Snake Chaser in stores... is it even still brewed? Morning Wood is a coffee stout, so that would be out even without my informal boycott of junior high humor in beer names.

I would really like to try some of the tap-only beers mentioned, but the logistics of buying growlers for a party are difficult for me to manage (i.e. I can't really buy them too far in advance). I'd prefer to stock up and not have to be running around buying beer at the last minute.

Does Tin Whiskers put their St. Patrick's Day special into their regular distribution? Even though it is definitely NOT an Irish Dry Stout, it might be a nice beer to have on hand for a bit of variety.
