I didn't think most of GN's hazys were THAT hard to get. It's only their special adjunct hazys (and sours) that sell out "in 15 minutes". I've had no trouble getting their more regular beers on my visits (and see people saying the same on social media.)

Modern Times is also not that hard to get; they do monthly releases and you pay for them online and then go pick them up within 30 days for a lot of their hazys.

Certainly not the same as just being able to always go grab cans on a whim but it's a lot more populated area and a higher percentage of people are into craft beer.

On the flip side I don't find the statement offensive or inaccurate if we are talking about pure NE hazy IPAs; it's probably the biggest "thirst" I see for out-of-market beers on beer trading / facebook groups and the like because a lot of people do want that exact style and it's not made often here. Breweries are doing the aforementioned NW / NE hybrid more often than not. If that's what you are looking for in particular you might feel less than spoiled.

Yeah, this is pretty accurate I think. Not many breweries doing straight NE-style juice like GN and MT are, but some are close. It's kind of gotten to the point where just saying "hazy IPA" doesn't have a lot of meaning as there are increasingly different takes on the style.

Your statement eludes the point though. Are any of the people in the NW forum going onto the Pacific forum and trashing breweries there? Or going onto the Virginia forum and doing it there? Because that's an actual apples to apples comparison. This isn't a rhetorical question either, I don't go in the Pacific forum, so for all I know you're being attacked in there and so you're coming here to retaliate and that makes total sense to me.

If not (and I suspect this is the case) how about I drop in and let everyone know that Alvarado St is overrated, that Cellarmaker has a few ok beers but is really popular due to intense SF fanboy/homerism and I wouldn't bother with Rare Barrel because there are no good sours south of the Oregon Border. Or perhaps I could wander into Jupiter or Triple Rock and complain of their "hazies" as though they're representative of the Bay Area scene. Do you think everyone would thank me for my unsolicited criticism? Or would they feel attacked?

Maybe this is the wrong post to reply to but even though this thread devolved into utter chaos, it seems like you actually wanted an answer to the hazy question rather than trolling so I'll try to answer.

As you correctly ascertained, no one but Great Notion makes that the focus of their brewery. I would imagine this makes Portland different from a lot of other areas - where it seems like many breweries are popping up who focus just on hazy IPAs, and maybe that will change as the style becomes more popular but at this point it is what it is.

If I were go on an all hazy pub crawl it would be a short one, but I'd hit up Culmination, Ex Novo, maybe Ecliptic (and those breweries would likely only have a single hazy on tap) - in addition to GN and MT. I'll let other, wiser experts decide if those are ok or if they are inferior, but that's what I'd do. As for buying to take with, you're better off hitting a bottle shop, which might also have the OR/WA beers mentioned higher up in this thread.

As for the homeless issue, there are an abundance of complex factors - from housing, our urban growth boundary, lax laws, availability of resources - that feed it. It's something the city needs to work on, but not really beer-related. I can imagine how vacationers would feel though. Perhaps VA isn't there yet, The Bay Area is on the way though.

    Cheers!

And you were arguing with yourself (!) because to me and pretty much everyone on the planet Oregon beats Virginia handily. That said, I've been to 170 breweries in 30 states and I'm going to rank Virginia a cut above "mediocre" based upon what has happened in the last several years. (Another website ranked VA #23 in December...should be higher, no way should MD be ranked above VA.)

I should have said "as good as any hoppy beer made in Oregon."

Because clearly, a good clean pilsner beats a hoppy IPA any day.

Confirmed. Stopped in after work yesterday, still lots of crowlers in the cooler ready to be purchased. In fact, I don't think I've ever stopped in on an afternoon and they've been out of crowlers. But I also don't go on the weekends, or for special release cans.

this thread is kinda embarrassing. People like what they like, declaring your state better than another is ridiculous.

They were out of crowlers on 2/14, the day I was there trying to pick something up for my sweetie 2000 miles away.

it spawns from places like DC constantly comparing themselves NYC, LA comparing themselves to NYC, SF to LA, etc.. "my city is better than yours" is important to some people. it's a badge of honor of sorts.

there's no real culture of that here in the PNW. everyone i know in seattle loves visiting PDX/Bellingham/Van/etc and picking up on the different subtleties and culture.

Check all my posts and see what and where I'm posting if you really wanna know. I have beer knowledge in a lot of major cities so yeah I do post in a lot of the forums on this website because of that. It's not bashing, it's opinions and I'm gonna voice mine in any forum I want to voice mine as long as I'm knowledgeable on the subject. Hell, I've been critical of Aslin in the Aslin thread. I'm honest, not biased.

It's called an opinion and more people than you think agree with it.

Some states are better than others, again it's an opinion. Seems like the PNW forum simply can't take criticism of any kind. It all goes back to me saying some people come off as Portland has it better than any other city beer wise in the country and then what happens is people like me provide reasons as to why that's not the case.

It's called being proud of where you live, not necessarily a badge of honor.

I'm confused (again). Thinking back on the numerous comments you've posted in the NW forum...you've certainly provided your "opinion" regarding GN and MT, which appears to be based primarily on your own personal preferences. Otherwise...

Maybe my morning coffee hasn't kicked in yet, but I can't recall you providing a lot of "reasons" for why you feel Portland doesn't have it better than any other city beer wise. I've certainly heard you personally express that opinion often enough, but I don't recall you providing much in the way of "reasons" for why you believe that's not the case.

Simply put other cities in the country have caught up to Portland in all beer styles and surpassed them in some. I know it's tough to admit, I get that, but it's a fact my man.
