It used to be that harassment implied repeated behavior and a request/ statement of disapproval. One inappropriate act is not harassment. By your own statement, someone should be fired after one incident only if the recipient didn't like it- but if they do- no biggie.

I work in an office setting with professionals. There have been incidents of bad behavior and they were dealt with in what (most people) view as an appropriate manner. One person was asked to transfer to a different office, which he did.

To be clear, I have never grabbed a butt at work. I definitely don't plan on (potentially) throwing away my career because I can't keep my hands to myself.

Ummm, I work in an office setting with professionals as well. The behavior you're referencing wouldn't get someone fired because it was perceived as sexual harassment, but more than likely would get them fired because such behavior would be perceived and interpreted as a criminal act (assault, battery, whatever).

I work in a Federal agency, where there's a fairly strict interpretation of what constitutes sexual harassment (but I think it's fairly consistent with your definition). I agree the action perpetrated by the Melvin employee doesn't constitute sexual harassment. Does it warrant him getting fired? I really can't answer that, though I tend to agree with some of the cynical (but likely accurate) comments made in this thread. In my experience, the farther up the food chain you are, the more likely that an act such as this will result in some lesser form of punishment (counseling, a fine, brief suspension, sensitivity classes, etc). If the employee in question had been a line cook or dishwasher, I feel fairly confident in saying that he/she would have likely received their pink slip the next day.

What world do you live in? Have you seen who holds the highest office in the land and what he has bragged about grabbing or what he does? ?

You should get a new job. It would be frowned upon where I work but no one would lose their job over it.

I'm not condoning playing grab ass at the bar but that a lot of you think the man should lose his livelihood over it and a business should close(I think that is the point of a boycott which many here have called for) because of it is fucking laughable and sad at the same time. I haven't heard any other stories about him doing this so it doesn't appear that he is a habitual line stepper and they made everyone take some fucking horrible training we've all had to sit through. Can we move on now? The cat isn't getting fired and Melvin isn't closing, you won't get your pound of flesh out of this. What more do you want? Can the ones that want to beat this dead horse some more get your own thread to stay perched on your big white horse, a safe space of sorts? So the rest of us that really couldn't care less can discuss beer? RIIPA if you will.

I don't think anyone has suggested that Melvin should go out of business as a result of this one incident. Some folks have stated that they're unhappy with the way Melvin handled this, and some folks have expressed outrage over what transpired. I haven't heard anyone suggest that Melvin should go out of business as a result of this incident, though some folks have indicated they don't plan on buying any more Melvin products. Seems to me that if that's what they choose to do, that's their right. I don't have any quarrel with that decision.

As for losing one's job over this, I stand by my original (cynical) impression. Regardless of whether it would be right or wrong to do so, I suspect that if the individual who perpetrated this act was a dishwasher or line cook (instead of someone listed on the website as co-founder), I think they likely would have lost their job over this.

Personally, I'm in agreement with Terry on this (@beertunes).

"He hasn't been fired, and his life hasn't been ruined. I don't think there are that many people who want that. America, after all, is a very forgiving nation. As long as people learn, and grow, folks are willing to let go of things. But, it takes time."

For whatever its worth, that's pretty much how I see this as well.

I'm so confused by this lol. IPAlien is us (Odd13). 2x4 is @flyone or @MelvinBrewing_2x4 territory. Glad you like the beer though.
