Wet dog/roadkill off-flavor?

    If I remember correctly, it might survive, but it won't thrive unless it's fairly warm (between 80-95 degrees F). I've made quite a bit of sour beer, both cheater and the long way, and I know that if you're kettle souring you have to keep it above 100 F or Clostridium will thrive. Also, I think it has to do with pH levels as well, once the lacto goes to work, the pH is far outside the range that the Clostridium will survive.

    Enough about infections in beer... haha OP, are there any other beers that aren't barleywines or stouts that you get that smell/taste from?

    I think I know what you're getting at but you're describing it much more vividly. I occasionally get a "dirty puddle" smell from some stouts and porters. Never so pronounced it's offensive but it kind of fits in with your "wet dog" example. It seems to be a back aroma to stouts/porters that have a cola taste.

    My wife and I just shared a BA X-mas bomb! It's delicious. But we both picked up wet dog on the nose. The beer does not taste oxidized. I'm thinking it has something to do with the cinnamon.

    I noticed something off about the nose, but kept it to myself. After a while I mentioned something off on the nose. She agreed and mentioned wet dog, it was exactly what I was thinking. It is subtle. The cinnamon is the dominant adjunct but if you smell just right, faint wet dog. Strange.

    The first RIS I tried tasted like meat. I bought a sixer of it too. Fortunately I haven't had that issue since. I opened a founders sumatra brown the other day that had a green pepper smell, but the taste was fine. I was worried the coffee spoiled. Must have just been starting to get to that point.

    Yup, that can happen with coffee beers. I had that happen to 1 year old FBS.

    What breed of dog did it smell like? Maybe a Beergle or a Great Dank?

    My wet dogs smell nice though there are distinct differences. The Pomeranian like her bath shampoo to be girly scented whereas the Rottweiler does not.
