Looking to fly into Nuremberg and head on hopefully no longer than a 90 minute transfer from the Airport and we are looking for a new place to visit this summer.

We’ve enjoyed Erlangen last two years and fancy a change. I’m aware of Wurzburg one but I’m looking to see if any local guys on here could recommend maybe a smaller towns festival that would suit our needs?

    Thanks all in advance.

You mean something that is no more than 90 minutes away from Nuremberg? In that case I got nothing, sorry. Except for the Fränkisches Bierfest that is actually IN Nuremberg of course...

Maybe this site can be of some help:

Hate to be wishy washy about answering here, but there are literally 1000s of various Fests going on all the time all around Germany, it really depends on what you are looking for.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

We are looking for something that has atmosphere and numbers at least tent wise as good as Fruhlingfest Munich up to the grandness of Erlangen.

Hey we ain’t fussy as long as there’s beer, atmosphere, locals to mingle with and enjoy good beer.

Oh and we’ll be aiming to go anytime from 2nd week in June to mid/late August.

    Thanks again folks!

Maybe @BayernTrips will suggest a few now that starkbier is over...

At the end of August, early Sept there are many Volksfests. Regensburg, Erding and Freising are all close to each other distance wise and on successive weekends.

Stumbled upon Forchheim Annafest this evening while researching.

Looks a small town with limited bed options but looks like it has potential?

Might need to use some work time tomorrow to contact a few places to see if there’s bed options and go from there. It certainly suits us time of year wise.

Any more pointers would be gratefully accepted thanks folks!

Annafest in Forchheim is the end of July/beginning of August. Not a beer festival in a traditional sense but a lot of fun.

Late August usually has the Sandkerwa in Bamberg -- it was canceled last year but it looks like it may go on this year. Again, not a traditional beer festival but a lot of really good beer in a small area.

Added: Saw the reply on Annafest -- you can easily stay in Bamberg, it's a short train ride away.

We got into Bamberg for the last day of Sandkerwa 2016, breweries from around the region show up. It is a great way to sample beers from some you may not have been to, or heard of.

This is a good list to look at for ideas about festivals around Munich - helps to know your geography though: http://www.ganz-muenchen.de/volksfeste/kalender/liste_index.html

After you find something that might work, just google the festival name and you'll likely find a link to the organizer, but don't expect much English for the smaller festivals.

The Annafest is magical and the beer mostly excellent. You don't need to stay in Forchheim as it's easy to reach by train. You could stay in Nürnberg or in Bamberg.

I don’t trust any of us to navigate a train at 11pm and get home safely so we will have to stay in town or we could encounter issues.

Arrive early, leave at 8 PM. Have a child to guide you.*

Some super stuff folks. I’ve got a couple of options from hotels but I’ll need to act fast I guess as accommodation is apparently at a premium for Annafest time.

Has anyone stayed at Landhotel Schloss Buttenheim? Is it easy to get to after the festival I wonder? Taxi ride? Fayre of the taxi? Anything worth seeing beer wise in Buttenheim?

I have option of a hotel in Forchheim which I’m awaiting confirmation from but it’s a lot more expensive and doesn’t seem to look anywhere near as nice as the Buttenheim one but I’m trying to weigh up the location v value......

Good advice - the train station to the town center is 1.5 km (almost 1 mile, so about a 20 minute walk). However, the beer is great and you can tour the birth house of Levi Strauss. Yes, the man who brought us riveted blue jeans was born in Buttenheim. There is a little museum - nothing fancy - and it takes about an hour to tour it. Conveniently close to the breweries - I like St Georges best, but both have pretty awesome beer gardens on the edge of town.

Also, from the Forchheim station to Anna fest is quite a hike. There are shuttle buses and are well marked.

A taxi from Anna Fest to Buttenheim would run you about 25 Euro. Keep in mind that if you call a taxi, they charge you from wherever their starting point is on the way to get, then to where you are going. But after Annafest, there are usually taxis standing there.

Has anyone done a list of Löwenbräu named breweries in Germany? I had some good beer from a Löwenbräu outside Stuttgart, and there's a great one just west of Munich in Bad Wörishofen.

Maybe a good subject for a new thread?

Three currently operating in Franconia: Buttenheim, Stublang and Neuhaus. In the past, there ones in Vestenberg (closed 2011) and Unterschleichach closed (2009). Going back further, there was a Löwenbräu in Bamberg that brewed into the late 80's existed as a brand until the late 90's (some info here)
