I don't go to bars and rarely to taprooms, and have no FOMO, but thanks for the lifestyle advice.

    Maybe Utepils Pils?

Agreed, we don't get the canned 4pks with the rad, vintage art in central Iowa market but I picked up a super fresh 4pk when in Madison for GTMW last year and had exceptional quality and freshness with it on draft as well. Not transcendent like the quick shipped stuff at El Bait Shop of the unfiltered/unpasteurized stuff that was only a couple days out from packaging, but still quite good.

I agree...more German pils for Schells.

I would call Wonderstuff an Americanized Pils. Good beer but not close to style for a Bohemian.

Haven't tried the new Little Yella Pils but hearing positive things.

I think Fair State Pils just won some tasting somewhere. I haven't had it in awhile but they do a good job with lagers.

Schell's Pils is a great option for your tasting experiment. Let us know how it goes?

Yes, I'll post my results .. but I'm still in the beer selection phase, so it will be a week or two.

As to including Schell's, the more I investigate this, the smaller the candidate list becomes. Since not even Schell's claims theirs is Czech-style, it is likely off the list, despite how this site might have it classified. As I said, one purpose of this exercise (for me) is to educate myself on the style. That is more the point than declaring a "winner".

To that end, I may add the Czechvar (USA name for Budweiser Budvar) to go along with the PIlsner Urquell to set the benchmark. Hopefully I can find at least one of them "reasonably fresh".

Has anyone seen Czechvar in anything other than green bottles?

@steveh, I may also include something like Ayinger's Bavarian Pils as a comparison for how German v Czech pils differ.

So, for MN beers, right now the only certain beer on my list is Dakota Soul.

Perhaps Parity Pilsner and Wonderstuff. (Info from @islay makes me "wonder" about Wonderstuff -... and not even Tin Whiskers claims theirs is a Czech-style) Perhaps I can find a Trillsner crowler.

Whatever I decide, six is my limit for such a one-person tasting.

Isn't Utepils pilsner a Czech style pilsner?

The last time I had Czechvar I think it was in a brown bottle, but that had to be a year ago and I haven't seen it since.

Dakota Soul may be the closest to a true Czech Pils, but I feel Utepils, Wonderstuff and Fulton lean Czech enough for comparison tasting

Yeah. I wasn't checking my actual list... I knew I must be forgetting something. The Utepils is a definite, too.

Pounded down a 4-pack of Pilsner Urquell that was 6 months old. It is still a lovely beer. If you are willing to include some non-store options, Birch's pils is one of the best I have ever had and they do crowlers now.

Going by the link, all the ingredients are different. But I think the noticeable difference is the Saaz hops and softer water in the Bohemian pils.

Bad Weather has a Bohemian Pilsner, but it's taproom only. Waldmann, just behind the alley from Bad Weather, makes a fine German Pilsner. Worth a visit!

OK, it's set. The Czech Pils tasting will include 4 beers:
    • Dakota Soul
    • Utepils Pils
    • PIlsner Urquell
    • Czechvar (Budweiser Budvar)
    Czech Republic v Minnesota!

The process will be, first, a review of each beer individually, done in the normal way (my normal, anyway). Once this is done, I will assign a ranking 1-4 for each.

Then, a side-by-side tasting of all four with a ranking of 1-4 (no review scores like aroma, feel, etc., just a 1-4 forced rank) on:

    1. True to Style (using both the BJCP and GABF style descriptions. Since I am not a qualified judge, this will be a bit dicey, I know, and I will rely on comparisons to the Pilsner Urquell as the default, assuming the P-U is in reasonably condition. Yeah, I know, this gives that beer a built-in advantage.)
    2. My enjoyment (a forced rank of which I like better; decidedly NOT to style)

Finally, an overall ranking of just the numerical sum of the ranking of the above plus the ranking 1-4 on the review score.

A "perfect" score, thus, is 3. The worst-case score is 12.

A goofy system, I know. We'll see how it goes.

If I'm still motivated after that, I'll grab some Ayinger Pils and some Schell's Pils, refresh my stock of Czech Pils, if necessary, and do a style v style tasting of Czech v German Pils styles (this will not be a ranking; just an educational exercise).
