If it's good beer I'd rather buy a 12 pack as it's priced better, but 12 packs choices are quite pathetic around town. I don't live in Manhattan luckily, I have a car so I do shop at bigger grocery stores and beer distributers but when I go to the local grocery stores (not bodegas) within 2 blocks from my house, almost no 12 packs. Except for places like Rite Aid, but they do not have the best selection obviously. I do love when I can find Sierra Nevada 12 packs for $15 or so, but that's mostly when out on Long Island. But do you think you can convince big retailers with little available shelf space to carry 12 packs of something that isn't an IPA or flavored with additives?

Its going to be an uphill battle, but one worth fighting for.

One of the biggest pet peeves is actually all of the people who sell the 12packs but don't offer them in cold storage or a reach-in-cooler. Say what you want about bodegas and delis in NYC, but I'd rather pay $1-2 more for a pack of beer if I knew it was kept cold the entire time and I can walk home with it and crack one open right away.

The Crisp is really good......I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves by the "raters".....

    Mr Sixpoint....

I have a question on The Crisp....

The bottom right of the can says lager I believe but the back of the can and the box says Pilz....

I know I'm missing something and I know you will have a well planned and constructed answer...

    Thanks

I spoke with my local distributor. Their Sixpoint delivery come on Wednesdays, so I went in yesterday evening. No Alpenflo. This distributor takes customer requests/orders, so my name is now on a list with them for Alpenflo. If they were ordering "conservatively" [i.e. not ordering] they now know at least one person wants it! This distributor is really good with craft beer and I got a deer in headlights sort of look when I asked about Alpenflo. They looked through the wholesaler's catalog and couldn't find it. So, I suspect they couldn't not order it yet (more PLBC issues?) or were not aware.
    yeah...

    [....first world problems. ]

Since this thread has tons of distractions anyway.... When I couldn't find Alpenflo I ended grabbing a six pack of Firestone Walker's Lager and was pleasantly surprised. People tuned into this thread might want to give it a try too. I think the Founder's Solid Gold noise drowned out Firestone's announcements for this Lager. Firestone calls it a Munich-style Helles, this site calls it an American Pale Lager, it's probably somewhere in between. Compared to a typical helles I found the malt to be a little light and it's 17 IBUs punch higher than expected, but bitterness is more restrained than many craft takes to the American Pale lagers (more specs are in the Brewbound article linked above). Helles or pale lager, whatever...it's pretty good, and I drank two last night with ease. Unfortunately, Firestone's price is a bit higher than similar beers, like Sixpoint Alpenflo or Founder's Solid Gold, which leaves me a little torn, because I want to support these styles. If only Firestone had a larger format "budget" pack...

I drank 3 of these while watching the Liverpool match yesterday. It easily could have been 6+ if I wasn't also on kid duty solo. Such great flavor yet so easy drinking. 12 pack format was definitely the right call on this one!

Randy, I was grocery shopping at my local Wegmans yesterday and I took a quite 'walkabout' in the beer store and saw that they had the FW Lager. And then I saw the high price - yikes.

    Cheers!

P.S. There was no Sixpoint Alpenflo either on the shelf or in the coolers.

I had the Firestone Walker Lager a few months ago when it first hit shelves here in Chicago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. At the time I wondered if it was misclassified by style on here and it seems like I was on to something - It was certainly a more American twist on the Helles style. I would just say though, for me, Alpenflo was the best beer of the bunch, Firestone Lager was also good, but Founders Solid Gold wasn't really comparable to either of those since its an AAL and I'd say much more simple compared to either of the others.

Edit: I am curious what prices for a 6-pack you and @JackHorzempa were seeing. I think I paid $8.99 for it.

Hopefully Randy will provide you with the exact price. I was a bit in shock so perhaps my memory is not exact here but I think it was priced at 11 bucks (which is crazy IMO).

    Cheers!

When I hear the terms American "Twist" or "interpretation" my mind immediately goes to over-hopped, dry-hops, or non-traditional additions of fruit, spices, coffee, etc. I hate that stuff in traditional styles, so I want to be clear that's not the case with Firestone Lager. From the Brewbound article:
Firestone Lager's American "touch" is basically just a slightly lighter pale malt, which makes the perceived bitterness of the hops a little stronger. Otherwise, it's very traditional. I agree it sits on the edge between two styles, but it gets there by a very "traditional" means, if that makes any sense.

EDIT: it's 4.5% ABV too, so on the low side for a helles. A drinkability sweet-spot though, I think.

I think I paid $10-$11 for the six pack, but don't quote me because while I notice and compare prices in the store, I tend to forget them as soon as I walk out. The deed is done and I can't unspend the money, no need to concern myself from then on!

My experience buying beer in NYC has been that when the same beer is offered in both a 12-pack and 6-pack format, the 12-packs are almost always significantly older than the 6-packs they are sitting right next to. So, even if there's a price savings on the 12-pack, I'll go with the 6-pack under those circumstances.

Also, all else being equal, my personal preference is the 6-pack format. I'm an apartment dweller and my fridge usually doesn't have room for 12 new beers. That said, it looks like a grocery store near me just got some in and I plan on making room for them tonight!

I totally understand what you are saying, and I completely agree with your assessment - its traditional ingredients tweaked in such a way that it skews hoppier with a more pronounced hop character.

I watched the recording when I got home from work. What a game! Incredible atmosphere, I'm absolutely loving this team...Alpenflo was the perfect beer choice; tasty enough to enjoy what your drinking but subtle enough where you don't feel the need to dwell on the lingering flavors (if that makes any sense?). It's a beer even our German mastermind Klopp would be fond of!

    Allez, Allez, Allez!!!! @LFC_YNWA :grinning:
