A very limited release (600 cases) in the next week or 2. Sounds like it's going to be a blend of BBB, Triple barrel and Baptista

Fist we have Big Bad Baptist Reserve from Epic Brewing. What makes this one "Reserve"? Apparently it's because this version is a blend of the best, of all three barrels from all three 2017 Big Bad Baptist variants. It's said that crazy flavors were not the focus here, simply the smoothest blends that Epic has to offer. This will be a pretty limited batch when it hits. Only 600 cases will be produced. Big Bad Baptist season is still a ways away; maybe this will arrive sooner because of it's reserve status. At least now you can start planning your attack strategies sooner than later.

If you blend 3 okay beers do you come up with something better?

Damn. I thought Big Bad Baptist was delightful. Haven't had the other two.

But in theory, yes. A blend could cover up brewing mistakes, or off flavors or enhance weak but desirable flavors.

Consider me excited! Epic doesn't come to my home state, but considering I work (and occasionally run) in an adjoining state that gets Epic, I'll have to keep an eye out for this. I won't get my hopes up though with the limited quantities.

Which three okay beers are you referring to? BBB has a BA score of 4.37, Triple Barrel 4.43, and Baptista has a 4.41. They are listed as "Outstanding". You have to have a score in the low 3's to rank as "Okay".

I'm kind of with you on this one. But not with the whole "okay beer" part. I'm just thinking: BBB is really good, Baptista is a great variant, same with the triple barrel. Blend them all together, given most of the beer and ingredients are the same, what will change?

If I were putting together a "Baptist Reserve" my first idea would be an extended barrel aging, or a mixture of barrels. Something other than what patrons can blend together with beers on the shelf.

Kinda makes me wonder if they an excess of barrels for each release of each of those, so they stirred up the leftovers into a new beer.

Still, I'm excited to try and try it, but that was one of my first thoughts.

"Okay" was MY opinion of the three base beers. Here's to their endeavor.

    Cheers!

I didn't care for the triple barrel and haven't drank my baptista yet. I like the base beer a lot though, close to KBS imo.

Yeah, that's what we did. It's not really a blend of three different beers, it's the barrel selection that made it the reserve. I can see your confusion though. The best way I describe it is that it's a softer grand cru version of TBBB (since theres still coconut)

It definitely wasn't leftovers and we bought special barrels for this release that didn't go into other blends. Took a few extra months to really mellow out the flavors too. I was in favor of a much softer coconut flavor since I don't actually like coconut, but it went well with the rum.

Very nice. I didn't know we had an Epic worker on these boards.

Just recently discovered Kansas gets your work so I made a short drive a couple weekends ago and finally picked up Big Bad Baptist and Baptista. Hoping I can find some of this Reserve, but that may be a little hopeful with the amount being produced.

I’m the barrel blender for epic in Denver. I’ve been w epic for 5 years now. I make all of our sours as well as blend a large chunk of BBB. I get on here every few weeks but anyone can feel free to ping me on posts.

Triple Barrel was a Top-5 stout of 2017 for me. More than okay.

I would say BBB is probably the best new beer for me that I tried in the last year. I have Baptista and Triple Barrel waiting. I dont even have to try those to know I want this reserve.

Legitimate question: Do you add flaked/toasted coconut or coconut "flavoring" into Triple Barrel Baptist? In my experience, and I know I might be in the minority here, but I can't get into beers that taste like they have coconut flavoring in them, ala Triple Barrel Baptist, Last Snow, even Bourbon Paradise, etc. But if beer has flaked, or better, toasted, coconut, like Space Trace, Prop 14, Coconut Rye Parabola, Okie Paradise, etc. it tastes significantly better to me. Just curious, 'cause I loved BBB but just couldn't get into Triple Barrel BBB

I agree. A lot of coconut stouts taste like suntan oil to me. (but I think Prop 14 was actually coconut water?) but I didn't get that vibe from Triple Barrel BBB. Maybe just my tastes.

Yep, typo on my part, that should have been Prop 13

And, yes, suntan lotion. I got that big time from Last Snow and even in Triple Barrel BBB... That's just something I cannot get past, doesn't matter how well made the rest of the beer is.
