Basically, free beer (in Maß) coupons. IIRC, they really can't give away "free" beer at the Oktoberfest, so they charged you some tax pittance or something -- 10 pfennigs, or the like.

Ohh ok. I thought they literally gave away free glassware. But from the sounds of it, it's easy enough to get "free" glassware.

At one of my local pubs last year during Oktoberfest they were giving away Maß's. I was kind of shocked, those can't be cheap.

A quick scan on Amazon has them at about $20 each on average.

Multiple definition use -- in Munich you order "Ein Maß, bitte." but they don't bring you the vessel only.
    Don't underestimate those tent guards...
Well, Paulaner gives you one for buying a can of beer and I think it was about $15.

I've told the story before, but I got mine from a Spaten "official" (one of the guys in berets) at the Ochsen tent. I was over during Spaten's 600th anniversary and was asking around the main offices (yes, there are offices at the tent) for the U.S. importer of Spaten because we were supposed to meet up for a beer. Probably didn't hurt that I knew his name and I was wearing a Spaten 600th t-shirt.

Guy asks me why I was looking for Andreas and I tell him that he was going to buy us a beer. Guy asks how many beers we want, I tell him one each for our party (4) would be plenty. He peels off about 12 tickets for us -- of course, as told above, it was our last day (maybe second to last?) and there was no way we were going to go thru all 12 tickets -- so I paid it forward.

Bierman, the tickets your friends get are probably the same sort of coupons.

I found one of these at a yard sale for a buck - best $1 I've spent in a long time. I've used this glass the most since I picked it up.

The first one I got as swag for judging a home-brew competition, the next two I got at Binny's for buying HB something or other. Gave one of those to an old friend to continue the Karma.
