If I got to a liquor store that has a growler station I don't tip the employee that fills it for me. TBH I probably wouldn't tip on the growler purchase either if getting it at a tap room or brewery.

Sculpin was, and is a damn fine beer. To me it always came down to not wanting to spend that much on a 6 pack when I could buy something just as good for way less.

Still waiting for Aloha Sculpin in my region. Ballast Point gets a bad wrap cause of price point tbh.

There's NO coffee in Black Note. It's their Double Cream Stout and Expedition Stout blend aged in bourbon barrels.

Just because something is done one way doesn't mean it should be. My boss pays me I don't expect to make my money off the generosity of strangers. I'm their for x hours I get paid x amount. If someone wants to hand me some extra cash as a thank you that's great but, it shouldn't be a requirement of setting foot in the door. If you can't pay your servers a decent wage have a counter where people can pick up their food and seat themselves. I'd much rather do that than worry about if i'm tipping too little or too much. I'd rather do that than pay an extra 20% just for walking in the door.

The problem isn't so much that everyone is tipping (even though they don't). The problem is how widely tips can vary. Some people still consider 10% normal, others 15%, and as we're seeing on this thread, some pay 20% tips. In other instances, I've seen people leave notes on a receipt giving them an excuse not to tip (i.e. you brought out ours food first, you smiled to them - not us, etc.). Some former service employees I know will leave a couple large bills on the table now that they are out of the industry and working elsewhere. Some tipping habits even break down to race/ethnicity. So a tip on a $25 meal and beer could range from $2.50 to $5 to $15+ pretty easily for anywhere from half an hour of work to three or more hours. And it's not all evenly distributed or related. A former college bartender who understands the hustle and bustle may come in and tip 40% on a to-go order even on a slow night and a large group comes in and tips 10% after sitting at a table on a busy Saturday night for hours.

That's a big part of the problem. Personally, I'd love to just do away with tipping and make good service standard.

Bell's web site says "The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel.". So did they use malt that tastes like espresso?

It says notes of espresso. This does not mean coffee is added.

I haven't visited this thread for awhile, but looking at the big picture of it I notice the majority of the likes are on the rebuttal comments, not the "controversial" gripes. I'm not surprised. Its to be expected given the premise. Just commenting, not a gripe.

Just cause you say it's not a gripe, doesn't mean it's not a gripe.

This is not a gripe, by the way.

Looks like they do it with malt. This is the description of their Double Cream Stout; Double Cream Stout derives its name from its smooth, creamy texture, not the ingredients. Completely dairy-free, this stout blends ten different specialty malts to yield a remarkable depth of flavor. With only a touch of burnt notes, Double Cream Stout focuses on the softer, cocoa & espresso-like aspects of roasted malt.

Likewise I always carry cash, coming from a large family that when we go out never know who may whip out their credit card to pay,we all throw cash in for the tip,and we tip to the tune of 30%.as a group.

My controversial beer opinion is not to carry cash is a cop out on being able to split bills or at least offer to handle tip if someone else pays,so easy to say " sorry I don't carry cash". and please make a decent Pilsner.

Exactly. I sold the Ballast Point brand back in the day, and they thought dearly of it relative to the overall market. The folks behind Ballast Point and Wicked Weed cashed in/and out very cleverly for sure. The growing craft beer market has been driven into innumerable locales with great effect.

I stopped carrying cash when I had teenagers ("sorry, don't have any, see?"). Now empty nest, so can carry some again. I typically use cash in taprooms, and they seem to prefer cash tips for some reason...
