I hope mine come before Friday or wait until Wed or later. Going out of town and really don't want them sitting in the large parcel vault of the mailbox baking in the sun for 5 days...

I don't even like to let packages sit for a matter of hours this time of year! I hope the timing works out for you.

I suppose a downside of ordering from a business that is going through a 'transition' is that you don't know when you will receive your order?

Lately I have been ordering a fair bit from MoreBeer since they have a location in-state and I typically receive my order in less than two days from ordering (and free shipping for orders over $59).

    Cheers!

What do they charge you for shipping on a sack of grain?

I just went to the website to see:

A bag of Great Western Domestic 2-Row Malt is $43.99 but: “Does Not Ship Free.”

I personally have only purchased sacks from my LHBS (Keystone).

    Cheers!

I'm in VA and a 55lb sack ships here for $12. 10lb bags of grain do count for free shipping.

Yep. I found my LHBS to be the most economical way to buy full sacks of grain. They charge $46.99 for 55# of Rahr 2 row. I have found that MoreBeer is a really good place to get specialty grains (or base malts you don't need a whole sack of), because they offer 5 and 10 pound options at a discount over the per lb/oz price. Seems like a good compromise to me. Plus, as hoky mentioned, those ship free on orders over $59.

I recently placed an order including 36# of grain total, plus some miscellaneous items, and it all shipped free. Shipping is also quick, in my experience, since they have a California location in addition to the one in PA.

It is really too bad this thread was posted with a misleading headline, but who doesn't love an attention getting headline. 47Hops is NOT going out of business. We did file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August of 2017. Thankfully, that process is coming to a close in the next month or so and we expect to have an approved plan to restructure our debt soon. We are negotiating some of the final details now. I hope nobody reading this ever has to go through the process.

The $4.47 sale is a spring sale to clear out some space in our warehouse.

The hops have all been stored in our cold storage warehouses at temperatures below freezing since we took them in as bales and through the pelleting process back in 2016.

We did get slammed by a lot of hop lovers who wanted to take advantage of the deal we're offering. That was amazing. It's a good problem to have, but it is still a problem when the server can't handle the traffic. We've upgraded the servers so that shouldn't be a problem anymore. If we continue to see slow traffic, we'll upgrade again. The response has been overwhelming. Thank you!!! I would ask for your patience if you encounter a problem due to server traffic.

If you do have a concern, please send an email to info [at] 47 Hops [dot] com. Amanda, our customer service guru will get right back with you. She is answering every email personally to make sure that everybody is well taken care of and so everybody understands their order is being handled properly.

Finally, to speed up the processing time on our end during this sale we are doubling the size of our warehouse crew and have authorized overtime for them all. We'll get all the orders we receive out so order now, while supplies last. :-)

Actually, it's hard to find cheesy ass hops in the industry because all the main players understand how to store them properly. All the dealers we know keep their warehouses around freezing and in pellet form hops are sealed in a mylar foil that is flushed with some inert gas, either CO2 or Nitrogen. Under proper conditions, it takes pellets 3-5 years to begin to show any noticeable signs of degradation. Even then, there's no expiration date on hops after which they are unusable. They just gradually lose the properties you bought them for. If you find some cheesy ass hops, they may have been stored in common storage. We've seen that happen in other parts of the world.

They are either vacuum sealed or flushed with an inert gas like CO2 or Nitrogen. Thanks for catching that. We'll update the site.

Amanda!.... that's who I talked with and who replied to my emails. She was professional and courteous.

Surely you understand when a business has product/money flow challenges and promotes what is akin to a "fire sale", there will be some concerns (unfounded or not) from the customers regarding quality and actual receipt of the product.
From a customer stance, this was kind of a trifecta that, in my mind, verged on not boding too well.....restructuring, huge discounts and lack of access and follow up info due to server issues.

Thanks for joining up and providing an update.

Sorry about the misleading title. I have adjusted it to show spring sale. It was difficult to know exactly what was going on as the Chapter 11 was going on, assuming bankruptcy = closing, and having the sale all at once. Thanks for the clarification.

Nice to hear straight from the source, thank you. I also saw a thread over on Reddit Hombrewing praising Amanda. I think she deserves a raise!

No problem at all! I'm glad you posted something about it and brought it up. If you weren't clear on what's happening, chances are at least 100 other people were having the same thought. I appreciated the opportunity to share what's really going on. :-)

I can also say Amanda was very helpful in resolving my issue with not receiving my invoice confirmation email. She was very polite and was eager to help me get it resolved.
