A guy I know who sells everything he makes (not beer, but an alcoholic beverage), says you only enter if you wish to gain recognition for your product. Downsides are as you mention, and they entry fees and shipping can add up, along with lost revenue for his product which is not cheap.

Some of the big names in my state came up empty handed in WBC. If you look at German breweries that entered, some of my favorites struck out (international shipping would take its toll on those beers).

Yup, that is indeed a concern.

Jeff, you might be interested in watching this video interview with the folks of Brauhaus Schmitz (German Restaurant/Beer Bar in Philly). I think the entire video is worthwhile but if you start at around the 5:30 mark you will hear how the GM (Beate Schartner) discusses how she really had to work hard to get a Germany brewery to send them their beer (a Hefeweizen) since the owner/brewer was so concerned about the beer being negatively affected via transport across the Atlantic. She was dogged in her approach and was ultimately successful in getting this beer.

    Cheers!

Is this the first time they've published the complete list of breweries who entered? While they don't list the individual beers each entered, it seems to me that publishing this list will reduce the entries in the future.

Thanks for copying me on that. I did see Lawsons, Night Shift, Grimm (Not VA/MA but similar conversation) so I guess some are and some are not choosing to enter. I love that Russian River still does.

I guess but perhaps anything but a win is considered a bigger loss for these guys? Perhaps maybe some of their wares just wouldn't travel well? I seem to remember a quote from Shawn Hill a few years ago when not coming out as well as anticipating saying that "he wanted his money back."

All that being said, it seems good places/beers are well represented in the winners historically but with 5000 breweries, everyone cannot "get a trophy."

Anyway, with so many breweries, despite so much competition, the excitement over the competition seems to have waned.

Weird seeing all the small breweries on the list. Of the 10 michigan awards, I only recognize a few names. Big ups to black lotus brewery getting an old ale bronze. That's such a small place, I don't know if they even distribute. Their ipa was delicious, but I'll try their award winning beer next time I make it out there.

I went there a couple times when NHC was in Philly. Good German centric place.

Maybe you could swing by next time you travel to South Jersey (Glassboro)?

    Cheers!

It might just be worth making a weekend of it- and don't think it hasn't already crossed my mind .

I know you said that. I was wondering if anyone else had seen a list earlier.

But, more importantly, this does not seem like a good idea for the folks running the competition to publish the list.

But, if they have been publishing this list all along, then... nevermind!

Kudos to Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh for winning the gold with Penn Gold, a Munich Helles. I am drinking one now and it is very good. Quite an achievement!
